OUR MOTTO
"Gathered in the Spirit. Equipping for every good work." is reflected daily in the lives of our college community. Southeastern is committed to preparing students for success in professional and ministerial careers. Graduates are encouraged to impact culture through a lifestyle of excellence and integrity. Southeastern's dedication to students' spiritual and intellectual growth provides a framework for Christ-centered living both in and outside of the classroom.
OUR UNIVERSITY
Southeastern, an Assemblies of God university, welcomes students from a variety of denominations. Primarily residential, we offer a vital, Christ-centered education, equipping graduates to creatively serve in both professional careers and ministry-related fields. Southeastern University of the Assemblies of God is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; telephone number: (404) 679-4501) to award bachelor's and master's degrees. Inquiries to the Commission should relate only to the accreditation status of the university and not to general admission information.
OUR CAMPUS
Think palm trees, orange groves and wide sunsets reflected in sparkling lakes. That is the setting for our beautiful Mediterranean-styled campus in Lakeland, Florida, where students enjoy a year-round average temperature of 72 degrees. Situated between two lakes on more than 87 acres, our location provides students easy access to the cultural and recreational opportunities of nearby Tampa, Orlando and the Florida Sun Coast.
OUR ADDITIONS
Within the last four years, we have newly built or remodeled 100% of Southeastern’s student housing. Our new residence halls are called Esperanza (Spanish for hope), Aventura (adventure), and Destino (destiny). Remodeled Bethany and Bauer halls, for new students, feature private courtyards and meet at the lion head fountain in the magnificent Fontana Plaza. In 2003 we opened our gymnasium and fitness center, followed by the Pansler Alumni-Student Union, which houses our bookstore, Wachovia Bank, and Mi Casa Café and convenience store. The Ted A. Broer baseball stadium was completed in 2004, followed in 2005 by a new swimming pool, the beautiful El Prado pedestrian mall, and Hennesy and James Brown plazas.
OUR STUDENTS
3,069 students enrolled at Southeastern for the 2007-2008 school year, representing 46 states and 40 foreign countries. Over 18% of our students are ethnic minorities.
Southeastern is primarily a residential, undergraduate university (approximately 75% of traditional students live on campus). Our students come from varied academic backgrounds. Before enrolling at Southeastern, students have attended public, private and Christian schools; others have been homeschooled.
Southeastern welcomes students from a variety of denominations (approximately 40% of our students come from an Assemblies of God background). Southeastern's overall student retention rate is 64%. The top states represented at Southeastern include: Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Connecticut, Washington, Delaware, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
OUR PROGRAMS
Southeastern offers 44 programs leading to a bachelor's degree and four programs leading to master's degrees. All undergraduate students are required to complete 54 hours of general education course work in addition to their major.
Research proves that graduates of liberal arts universities, such as Southeastern, develop the widest range of marketable skills, including public speaking, writing, problem solving, research, an acumen for organization, and an adeptness with technology. Students hone all these of these skills through Southeastern's liberal arts (general education) curriculum. Southeastern's liberal arts requirements also include 18 hours of religion courses to provide students with a strong Christian worldview as the foundation to all of their intellectual and professional pursuits.
OUR FACULTY
Southeastern's faculty have committed their professional careers to enhancing the community of the university. These spirit-filled men and women invest their lives, both in and outside of the classroom, toward the intellectual, spiritual and personal development of students. Our 23:1 student-teacher ratio is why alumni fondly recall the deep relationships developed with their professors at Southeastern and the ongoing mentoring relationships that have continued past their graduation ceremonies. Over half of our facultly hold doctoral degrees in their respective fields.
OUR DAILY LIVES
Every academic program at Southeastern includes Biblical studies, professors who care about students’ academic and spiritual growth, and a campus full of people who are committed to Christ. As a new freshman, you belong to one of our small, interactive FIRST teams, which gives you 8 to 12 new friends right away and helps you ease into our academic community.
Three days each week our campus community gathers for a spiritual boost in chapel. Chapel services are enlivened by our worship choir and band, ensemble groups, university musicians, and in-depth study of Scripture with our president, Dr. Mark Rutland. Included as well are an interesting range of well-known guest speakers. Additional special services include Fall Convocation (spiritual emphasis) Week, Spring Missions Week and Impact Emphasis Days.
At Southeastern, we consider both professional careers and traditional ministry as opportunities to be salt and light to the world. To help you discover and develop your spiritual gifts, we have many organizations designed to serve the specific needs of people in the Lakeland area and abroad. Some ministries include: church groups and para-church ministries, urban ministry, Spanish-speaking outreach, hospital visitation, crisis intervention, music and drama ministry, and ministries to the elderly, homeless people, troubled teens, juvenile criminals, unwed mothers, battered women and people with disabilities.
Southeastern also helps arrange summer trips for overseas missions. In order to encourage students to seek opportunities to minister to others via their professional careers, Southeastern has established outreach ministries, coordinated by each academic department. Some examples include: accounting majors offering tax preparation for the elderly and low-income individuals, psychology students assisting local counseling agencies, and social work students coordinating community service projects through homes in local urban areas. If you would like further information on ministries at Southeastern you may contact the academic department directly.
OUR PASTIMES
Like other universities, we offer a long roster of community activities, from thought-provoking to just plain fun: community service teams, our student film festival, guest speakers, leadership seminars, fine arts performances; honor societies and academic clubs; Student Body Leadership Council (SBLC) and resident assistants (R.A.s); FIRST teams activities, Thursday night student life events, outdoor activity groups like Surfers of Faith; newspaper and yearbook; cheerleading; and SUTV and SU Radioactive. A member of the NCCAA Division II, Southeastern fields teams in men’s basketball (winners of the 2005 NCCAA Division II National Championship), women’s basketball, men’s golf (four-time NCCAA Division II national champions), men’s baseball (winners of the 2005 NCCAA Division II National Championship), women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s soccer. Our intramural sports – softball, volleyball, basketball, and flag football – are for everyone.
OUR SUPPORT
Students and parents are pleased to discover Southeastern's commitment to keeping costs low while maintaining regionally accredited, high-quality programs. Financial aid includes federal and state programs, and both academic and performance scholarships. Ninety-six percent of Southeastern students receive financial aid. The average financial aid package for the 2007-2008 school year was $12,195.
