About Diigo
If you browse or read a lot on the web, we believe you will find Diigo indispensable. Diigo is two services in one -- it is a research and collaborative research tool on the one hand, and a knowledge-sharing community and social content site on the other.
A Personal Research Tool
Diigo provides a browser add-on that can really improve your research productivity. As you read on the web, instead of just bookmarking, you can highlight portions of web pages that are of particular interest to you. You can also attach sticky notes to specific parts of web pages. Unlike most other web "highlighters" that merely clip, Diigo highlights and sticky notes are persistent in the sense that whenever you return to the original web page, you will see your highlights and sticky notes superimposed on the original page, just what you would expect if you highlighted or wrote on a book!
Moreover, all the information -- highlighted paragraphs, sticky notes, and the original url -- are saved on Diigo servers, creating your personal digest of the web, your own collection of highlights from the web - ones that are meaningful to you! You can easily search, access, sort and share this collection from any PC or even iphone.
A Collaborative Research Platform
Diigo enables effective collaborative research. You can easily share your findings, complete with your highlights and sticky notes, with friends and colleagues. A project team, a class, or a club can create a group on Diigo to pool relevant resources, findings and thoughts together.
A Social Content Site
With every Diigo user tagging and annotating pages online, the Diigo community has collectively created a wonderful repository of quality content, filtered and annotated by the community, on almost any subject you may be interested in. For example, if you would like to find popular resources on e-learning, searching Diigo can probably get what you want in less time than using search engines, and you may also gain insights from other users.
You can find and subscribe to the most recent or most popular bookmarks under any set of tags. Our system also provides recommended news and resources personalized to your interests.
While you are reading a web page, the Diigo sidebar shows you who else has bookmarked this page or this site, and what other similar pages and sites they have bookmarked, providing you a social browsing experience and a great way to find related content.
A Knowledge-Sharing Community
Since you are what you annotate - bookmarks, tags, annotations are a great expression of one's interests and expertise - Diigo provides new ways to connect and keep in touch with friends, and to learn both from your friends and about your friends with little extra effort.
Diigo also provides new ways to connect with others who share similar interests. You can find "people like me" - those who are closest to you in interests, or search people by tags or sites to find others who share certain specific interests with you. Once you find people of interest to you, you can connect with them in multiple ways: invite them to add you as a friend, send them messages, invite them to a group, or simply add them to your watchlist.
"Diigo" ??
It is pronounced as Dee'go. The name "Diigo" is an abbreviation for "Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff." You see, we especially like the "Other stuff" part, which gives us an open mandate to relentlessly innovate and provide better and better value to our users. Don't worry, we won't go wild :-) We will focus on providing better ways to process, manage, share and discover information. So stay tuned and watch us rapidly evolve going forward!

Yet Another Social Bookmarking Site?
Diigo is often compared with other social bookmarking sites. We feel this is not doing it justice. As both a research tool and a knowledge-sharing community, Diigo is substantially more powerful. If you still prefer to label Diigo as "social bookmarking", we think it would be appropriate to call it "Social Bookmarking 2.0" :-)
Yet Another Social Network?
Though Diigo provides a rich set of social networking features, Diigo is quite different from typical social networks in that it is solely about social networking through knowledge-sharing. In other words, Diigo is a Social Information Network (SIN).
A SIN is a social network where information consumption, research, and sharing is central, and where the connection between people and people, between people and information, and between information and information, are exploited and harnessed to improve knowledge sharing and content discovery, and to enable more meaningful social connections and intellectual exchanges.
People come to a SIN not mainly to socialize, but because it provides superior tools for collecting, annotating, organizing and discovering information. In time, the "social" aspect of the network manifests in several ways. Some users will find that connecting with friends through content is a great and effortless way to learn both from friends and about friends. Some users will find that it provides a great way to find people with certain expertise, or connect and engage with people who share similar interests . Some users will find that it provides new ways to discover content.

We are a 12-person team with diverse experience in software development, marketing, academia, and investment management, who share the common traits of information junkies :-) . We are developing Diigo to scratch our personal itch - how to discover, process, manage, and share online information more productively and effectively. We are passionate about making Diigo the best knowledge sharing and management platform for individuals, work groups, and companies. Diigo is headquartered in the Reno/Tahoe area, Nevada, USA.
