Cholesterol be damned. It’s World Egg Day. An occasion for celebrating the greatest of all comfort food. Because with times like these, we could all use a bit more of that. Here’s what we hatched this week:

Snazzy schedule: Just like any tween, Yahoo! Calendar was worried about how it looked. So at age ten, it got a serious makeover, ushering this web calendar into a great new age of drag and drop, iCalendar integration, IM/SMS/email reminders, and Flickr loveliness. And coming soon are Outlook and iPhone synching and event discovery with Upcoming and other Yahoo! properties. Our little calendar — all grown up. Handsfree search: If you’ve got a certain BlackBerry or Nokia phone, it’s time to clear your throat. Voice-enabled mobile search is now available on multiple BlackBerry and Nokia devices. If you have one of a number of Nokia Series 60 phones (like the N95), you’ll find voice recognition in the home-screen shortcut of OneSearch 2.0 (get it here: m.yahoo.com/shortcut). And if you use Yahoo! Go 3.0 (get it here: http://get.go.yahoo.com/) and have select BlackBerry, Nokia Series 40, and Nokia Series 60 models, you’ll be able to find stock quotes, sports score, and just about anything else by simply yapping into your phone. And we know you know how to do that. It’s available in the US, UK, India, Singapore, the Philippines, and Canada.

Bless the pocket protector — it’s National Techies Day! A time to thank your favorite geeks for everything they do for you — whether it’s ridding your laptop of foul vectors, building super cool products you couldn’t live without, or helping you find the “any” key. You’d be staring at the blue screen of death without them. Here’s what our beloved nerds contributed to the world this week:

Searching for a president: With just 32 days to go until the next POTUS is decided, there’s no time to mess around. That’s why Yahoo! Search has launched a series of elections shortcuts. Want the latest on a particular candidate? Type in “Obama” or “McCain” and you’ll find links to the latest news, videos, photos, discussions, and poll results. Or type in “presidential election” for general updates as well as a link to register to vote. Curious about the contest from a state’s perspective? Type in “Iowa presidential election” and get the latest headlines and polling info for that state. More here. Mad dash to the finish line: Speaking of election polls and whatnot, Yahoo! News just updated its political dashboard. Just in time for the election’s home stretch, you can now see how the average poll numbers have trended over time, on a national and state-by-state basis. How has Obama fared in Ohio to date? Is McCain tracking up or down in Florida? Check it out and see if this race will be a photo finish. Cut to the chase: If there’s one thing we can thank the Internet for, it’s a short attention span. That’s why the new Yahoo! News beta, launched as an opt-in today, gives you just the first five paragraphs of a news story. Want more? It’s just a click away, although most people seem to drive on — proving the value of the news pyramid. (NB: If you’re a newshound getting your fix via news.yahoo.com, you’ll always get the full article.) You’ll also find relevant links to other stories and videos much higher on the page. And Yahoo! News is getting more and more open, providing links to outside sources like local newspapers, other news providers and bloggers through the Buzztracker tool. Was that short enough for you? Flickr’s mobile makeover: Attention iPhone-toting photographers: The new and improved mobile Flickr site (http://m.flickr.com) is now especially gorgeous for you too-cool-for-skool types. The site’s been refreshed with clearer navigation controls and puts your recent activity front and center. You can also browse sets more efficiently, thanks to arrow-topped thumbnails that help you move back and forth between photos. Trust me — it’s worth making room to your home screen.

Finally. A chance to shed the ridicule you endured in middle school. It’s Ask a Stupid Question Day — a perfect excuse to inquire about the basement in the Alamo without fear of reprisal. Here’s what we wondered about this week:

Messenger Number Nine: It’s official. The newest version of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows XP and Vista is out of beta. And now you can enjoy things like a total of 12 different skins, better “ignore” capabilities, inline video and picture viewing, great new emoticons (and they’re small again), ability to add contacts from other online services like Gmail and Hotmail, friend updates in your contact list, call forwarding and new voicemail delivery, the return of Yahoo! Games, and more control over your look and feel. And introducing Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox, which lets readers of your blog, website or social network page send you an IM without having to download or sign in. More here. (Back)check the video: What’s better than Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Hockey becoming the official fantasy game of the NHL? Being able to watch videos of killer moves on ice while you play your fantasy game. That’s right — now as you manage your rosters, player lists and line-ups, you’ll be able to watch video highlights of your favorite players on demand. A great new tool as you build your hockey dynasty. Sign up here.

Avast, me scurvy dogs. ‘Tis International Talk Like a Pirate Day — when your landlord becomes a “bilge-sucking blaggard,” your girlfriend a “buxom beauty,” tonight’s cocktail your “grog,” and that guy who won’t shut up about all of his iPhone apps a “poxy drivelswigger.” Give me an “Arrrr!” And then feast yer eyes on this week’s booty from the swabbies o’ Sunnyvale (and elsewhere):

Buzz on the run: You’re about to walk into a really hot party and realize you have absolutely nothing to talk about. Whip out your mobile phone, fire up Yahoo! Go, and fly your way over to the new Yahoo! Buzz widget. You’ll find the top stories in various categories from the last 12 hours. What’s more, iPhone users can “buzz up” their favorite stories at http://buzz.yahoo.com/iphone. There. Now you’re armed and dangerous with the latest on Obama, McCain, Troopergate, and that giant insurance company you now own part of. More here. Call me Ishmael: The National Maritime Museum has made Britain’s finest archive of maritime photography available on The Commons on Flickr. You’ll find photos dating back to the beginnings of photography in the 1840s, including expeditions to the Arctic, exploring the Port of London, seaside images by Francis Frith, and turn of the century passenger ships. Know the names of the people depicted, or precise locations, or any other information? Get thee tagging. More here. Satisfy song hankerings: When you just have to listen to that song right now, and don’t feel like downloading a player, hauling out your credit card, and restarting our computer, turn to Yahoo! Search. It now offers full song playback directly from your search results page. For thousands of popular artists and songs. Just search for an artist’s name and expand the FoxyPlayer (our browser-based player) that’s peeking out from the left side of your browser, click on a song, and listen to the whole darn thing. High-fives to our buddies at Rhapsody. The only catch — you’re limited to 25 songs a month. But still, how cool is that? More here.

Get out the cupcakes and party hats. Fifty years ago today, the integrated circuit was born. Semiconductor granddaddy Jack Kilby was too new at Texas Instruments to be eligible for vacation, so he spent his summer solving “the tyranny of numbers.” Poor guy got no R&R, but the world of electronics would never be the same. Here’s what we invented this week:

iPhone connection: You own an iPhone. Maybe you’ve downloaded apps for Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Friendster, MySpace, Bebo, Dopplr, etc. But you find yourself wishing you could just see ALL of your social network updates in one place. Introducing oneConnect for the iPhone. It’s a new iPhone app that gives you a single status dashboard for your bevy of connections — all from your snazzy little phone. But perhaps my favorite part is that you can now have bona fide IM conversations on your iPhone (and even see who’s online). One more reason your iPhone makes you the coolest person in the room. Your new home!: We know Flickr users don’t generally like it when we move their furniture around. But I think they’re going to like their new homepage setup. It won’t go live for a few weeks, but the sneak previews give you a good sense of how they’re using the space. It’s not radically different, but you’ll get more of a sense of activity, better view intro groups, and a lot more control over what you see, and what you don’t. More here. Wanna go Pro?: You really want that unlimited feeling of a Flickr Pro account, but you’re still paying off the airfare from your summer boondoggle? If you upgrade your account before the 30th, you can enjoy three months of free unlimited uploading goodness (or make somebody’s day by passing that code along to them). Not sure what Pro gets you? Check out the FAQ.

Product Pulse - August 15th, 2008

What’s with August 15th and creature hoaxes? Thirty one years, a SETI scientist in search of extraterrestrial life received a radio signal from deep space… but he could never detect it again. Today, two guys claim to be in possession of a bona fide Bigfoot carcass… but sounds like the DNA sample was part human but mostly possum. Ok, no joke, here’s what we tracked down this week:

Olympic redux: If you missed last night’s one-two punch from the American gymnastics team (probably because you were getting eight hours of sleep as I piled on more Olympics-induced sleep deprivation), Yahoo! Search has come up with a tool that lets you get photo highlights of the biggest moments of the Games. Just go to Yahoo! Image Search, type “Olympics” plus an athlete’s name or a sport, and you’ll get an up-to-date photo carousel of images from Yahoo! Sports’ coverage. You can just toggle through the various images without leaving the page. So you can stay on top of the Games without bags under your eyes. More here. Surfing Safari: If you’re a Machead and you want the speed and helping hand of Yahoo! Search from your browser toolbar, go install the Inquisitor plug-in for Safari. After acquiring the software in May, we’ve been quietly sprucing it up with technology from Yahoo! Search BOSS to make searching faster. We also gave it a design and interface facelift. And finally, we sent it to a few Berlitz courses, and now it speaks eight new languages — Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and German. Smarter, faster, and multilingual. Not bad for a few months. More here. Fire Eagle soars: The Web started out not really caring where you were. Now it seems like more and more services have found geographic religion. If only you had a digital switchboard that could update all of them with wherever you are — from state to neighborhood to street corner. Enter Fire Eagle, our new application for sharing, updating and managing your location information with Web services and mobile products. It also lets developers add location services to their applications. No more wandering clueless in a new city. No more missing out on a friend who’s just a block away. Check out some of the 50+ applications already running on Fire Eagle. More here.

Product Pulse - August 8th, 2008

Whether you’re gearing up to watch today’s Opening Ceremony, getting married, waiting for a prophecy to materialize, or taking photos for Flickr 888, the 8th day of August in 2008 is a most auspicious day. If you’re feeling lucky, too, check out how we prospered this week:

Shortcut to Beijing: It’s Olympic fever time. Want to keep up with Michael Phelps’ medal collection? Or find out who’s been disqualified for doping? Or keep tabs on whether Ronaldinho can bring victory to Brazil? Yahoo! Search just launched a shortcut module that gives you all the relevant news in one little tidy box above your search results. If you want a medal count update, just type “Olympics medal count” (and add “Macedonia” to that if you just want medals in that country). Enter “water polo Olympics” if you just want a recap of results and upcoming events for that sport. Type in “Blanka Vlasic Olympics” to keep up on the world champion high jumper and her news, schedule, and results. Gold medal for Yahoo! Search for making it that easy. More here. My Olympics: And speaking of the summer games, the My Yahoo! team just released an Olympic Games module that gives you an at-a-glance summary of the latest and greatest. You’ll get news headlines, photos, videos, and medal counts for the top countries, all in one place on your My Yahoo! page. For you busy multitaskers, there’s no better way to catch the thrill of victory… and the agony of defeat. More here. Medals to go: Yup. It’s another Olympics feature! This one lets you keep tabs on the run. Not to be outdone, the Mobile team has created two ways for you to stay up to date on game action. If you have Yahoo! Go 3.0, just add the “2008 Beijing Games” widget to your carousel. Otherwise, just fire up your phone’s web browser and head over to http://m.yahoo.com/2008games. You’ll get news, analysis, photos, and can even customize your site to focus just on your favorite sports (judo, fencing, kayaking, what have you). More here. Photo fix: The next time you upload a batch of photos to Flickr, you might notice a new “Save and Edit” option. Click that and you’ll enter the free and easy world of photo editing with Picnik. Your whole batch will appear in a tray (aka the Picnik Photo Basket) so you can tweak en masse — rotate, crop, resize, fix colors or exposure, sharpen, kill red-eye. It’s like rolling in the thick green grass on a warm summer’s day, minus the ants. Edit away! More here. See what you wanna see: Imagine visiting a blog that builds you a personal list of headlines that are most up your alley. That’s what the MyBlogLog team just made possible, through a new WordPress plug-in (we’ll get on that next week!). Blog owners who install the Just For You plug-in can deliver custom headlines to visitors who are MyBlogLog members. It looks into the blog’s archives and serves up posts that matching tags or categories listed in the user’s profile. If the reader isn’t a MyBlogLog user, Just for You just presents a list of headlines based on collective tags of recent MyBlogLog visitors. More here.

Twenty-seven years ago, “Video Killed the Radio Star” premiered on a cable network geared toward playing nothing but 24/7 music videos. Remember when the screen would go black as MTV employees popped a new tape into the VCR? (Remember when MTV actually played music videos?) After you pay tribute to that original batch of VJs, check out what we riffed up this week:

Speedier, easier, tastier: Fans of social bookmarking, rejoice! Delicious just got snackier. It’s now sporting an entirely new infrastructure, making it faster and more reliable. It’s got a revamped search engine that lets you search in all kinds of new ways, including within your social network. And it has a spiffy new interface, making it easier for newbies yet familiar enough for veterans. And for good measure, the site now lives at delicious.com so you don’t have to remember where that wacky punctuation goes (although, of course, del.icio.us still works just fine). More here. 24 hours of Flickr: August 8th isn’t just opening day at the Beijing Olympics. It’s the start to Flickr 888 — a day-long global photo project that invites photographers around the world to snap a moment in time and share it with the group. The goal is to capture a day in the life around the world. You can only submit one photo, so make it your best shot. Stumped? Check out photos from last year’s 24 hours of Flickr. More here. Back to school brainiac: Brain turned to mush over the summer? Head over to our new Back to School site and do some cerebral calisthenics. An interactive module of the brain helps you understand all four lobes and offers games to help you sharpen them. You’ll also find exercises for overall brain fitness and top-10 lists of back-to-school fashions, dorm essentials, elementary school stuff, and computer gear. And you’ll get info on how to hit the books while being green and a listing of the most popular back-to-school searches. Parents and kids welcome. Going on a Mail Safari: If you’ve been longing to use the All-New Yahoo! Mail with your Safari browser, pine no more. Full compatibility is here. Better yet, it’s OS agnostic, so it works with both the latest Mac and Windows versions of Safari. And that’s especially handy if you switch-hit between Mac and PC at home and work. Let’s hear it for harmony. More here.

Product Pulse - July 12th, 2008

Forty-six years ago today, a guy taking classes at the London School of Economics grabbed some friends and performed at a small jazz club in London. They didn’t get paid a dime. Two years later, they outranked the Beatles in popularity. After you hum a few bars of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” see what wild horses dragged out of us this week:

Be the BOSS: We’re sitting on a goldmine of search infrastructure and thought it was about time we shared. Enter Yahoo! Search BOSS (short for Build Your Own Search Service), a new open Web services platform that brings DIY to one of the most valuable assets on the Web. If you’re a developer or owner of a site of any size, we’re giving you the keys to creating unlimited search mashups for the search experience of your dreams. If you’re a user, be prepared for searching to take on a whole new dimension when you’re visiting your favorite sites. We’re leveling the playing field and want everyone to play ball. More here, here, and here. Beta be gone: It’s official. The old My Yahoo! is being sent to Sunny Acres Farm on Monday, to be replaced with the *new* My Yahoo!. You’ll find a pile of new content like third-party (gasp!) modules from Netflix, Facebook, and Gmail, as well as custom-designed modules with more of the best stuff from select publishers (Entertainment Weekly, Forbes, People, Salon, Wall Street Journal, etc.). You also get more flexibility and control over page layout and easier customization tools. What’s more, the team has launched the My Yahoo Content Gallery, which presents cool cherry-picked modules that you can add with one click. And they’ve improved the search capabilities to surface content that’s related to your query. More here. Mine, mine. All mine! Pinpointing your peeps: Ever wondered where all those people you’ve met in your favorite Yahoo! Group are from? Now you can get a visual representation through People Map Beta, a new “grouplet” launched by our new “Groups Lab” team. Group owners and/or moderators fire off a form to their members, who voluntarily complete it with information that puts them on a map and becomes a dynamic mini-profile. More here. Stay tuned for more cool hacks from the Lab. I’m busy but this is really funny: If you’re an avid user of Yahoo! Messenger status messages, you know what a bummer it is when you have to tell people you’re busy, on the phone, away from your desk, etc. That’s because it means your friend won’t be able to click on your latest favorite video link. Or see that you’re peeved by coffee grounds. Or see what song you’re listening to. In the latest Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta, you’ll notice your days of sacrifice are now over. You can have your cake and eat it, too. More here on how to mix work with pleasure.

Whether you celebrate with pyrotechnics, battle re-enactments, red-white-and-blue parades, patriotic ballads, or rabble-rousing barbecues, today marks 232 years of severing ties with King George and his British Empire. Take that for taxation without representation! After you pause to thank that guy with the disproportionately large signature and his fellow forefathers, check out what we declared this week:

Upcoming feels refreshed: It’s summer and you can’t afford to miss a single kite festival, music festival, puppet show, or free Slurpee day. The team at Upcoming just made it easier for you to find things to do with a sleek new interface and more types of events. Now you can browse by smaller-scale local categories like farmers’ markets, craft fairs, and street festivals. In addition to making over the front page, they’ve added “What’s Nearby” info, so you can find parking, a place to catch a bite, and even the closest cash machine so you don’t have to bum bucks from a buddy. More here and here. Heavenly headers: Scrolling is out, tabs are in. That’s why My Yahoo! has spruced up its header with a new tabbed design, letting you create additional customized My Yahoo! pages to your heart’s delight. Just click “new tab,” name your tab, add content, and set up your page’s appearance. You can have up to nine My Yahoo! tabs, compartmentalizing your many interests to specific pages. Now you can finally keep your tattoo passion neatly separated from your knitting obsession. More here. Fireworks finder: Not sure where to head for that pyrotechnic extravaganza this year? Looking for pie at a great county fair? Go visit our Fourth of July fireworks and event finder. While you’re there, peruse 100 milestone documents of U.S. history, pick up a picnic recipe or two, and see what the most popular Independence Day search terms are. Forgot the URL? Just click on the star-spangled masthead on our front page and you’re there. Happy Fourth!
