bon jovi & sugarland - have a nice day

we've featured both sugarland and jon bon jovi before on skippy's late nite music club, but imagine our delight to find that the two acts have worked together many times, proving that the lines between musical genres are blurring more and more.

what do you know, it wasn't the poor people that caused the financial crisis

via our good friend stirling newberry at the agonist, we are thankfully shown this argument that successfully kills the rightist meme "the poor people who couldn't afford the mortgages the banks gave them caused the financial meltdown."

mcclatchy newspapers:

commentators say that's what triggered the stock market meltdown and the freeze on credit. they've specifically targeted the mortgage finance giants fannie mae and freddie mac, which the federal government seized on sept. 6, contending that lending to poor and minority americans caused fannie's and freddie's financial problems.

federal housing data reveal that the charges aren't true, and that the private sector, not the government or government-backed companies, was behind the soaring subprime lending at the core of the crisis.

subprime lending offered high-cost loans to the weakest borrowers during the housing boom that lasted from 2001 to 2007. subprime lending was at its height from 2004 to 2006.

federal reserve board data show that:

more than 84 percent of the subprime mortgages in 2006 were issued by private lending institutions.
private firms made nearly 83 percent of the subprime loans to low- and moderate-income borrowers that year.
only one of the top 25 subprime lenders in 2006 was directly subject to the housing law that's being lambasted by conservative critics.
the "turmoil in financial markets clearly was triggered by a dramatic weakening of underwriting standards for u.s. subprime mortgages, beginning in late 2004 and extending into 2007," the president's working group on financial markets reported friday.
stirling goes on:

now we are on the other side, and it is a different environment. for one thing bernanke has lost control of monetary policy, the fed can not presently enforce it's preferred overnight rate, and yet cannot abandon it's policy of low rates, lest it cause an economic downturn which spirals out of control. while there is no formal definition of depression worthy of the name, i will over one: a recessionary period with deflationary pressures that have no tendency to equilibrium. a depression, then should be defined as a recession which has gotten out of control.

apparently now the only funny thing about david zucker's right-wing comedy an american carol is how fast it's sinking at the box office.

this week it slid from #9 to #15, with a loss of 58.8% in receipts. the bill maher anti-religious screed religulous, on the other hand, lost only 35.5%, altho that flick expanded onto 66 more screens than last week, whereas carol lost 18.

religulous slid from #10 to #13, but since there were 4 new movies premiering this weekend, that only makes sense. carol's slide is more precipitous, but hardly surprising, considering it only gets 13% on the tomato-meter.

old school...

crystal gayle - somebody loves you

it doesn't ad up

there's a new phenomenon around los angeles, the home of skippy international headquarters. several billboards, dozens, actually, have been replaced by the new technology of digital billboards. these are, simply, gigantic flat screen tvs that flash a variety of ads in succession. there are two within two blocks of skippy international headquarters, and they are pretty irritating, especially when driving.

banbillboardblight.org tells us that one digital billboard has the carbon footprint of 18 cars...not such a good idea.

the very irritating thing about this sudden appearance of digital billboards in la, however, is that apparently city attorney rocky delgadillo is in the pocket of clear channel, who owns the huge tv screens:

the legislation referred to was state senate bill 563, which would have allowed cities like los angeles to require the removal of billboards over a period of years without paying monetary compensation. the bill would have also removed a section of state law that “presumes†a billboard be legal if no official complaints have been lodged against it within five years...

and since that introduction of sb563, the media and others have raised issues about the city’s inability to get rid of illegal billboards. public controversy has been generated about the supergraphic ads that wrap entire sides of buildings, the digital billboard conversions, the billboards on the freeways, the electronic signs proposed for the convention cente. and what have we heard from our city attorney about his efforts or even opinions—exactly nothing.

given that clear channel and other billboard companies gave delgadillo more than $450,000 of free billboard advertising during his initial election campaign, and given the fact that delgadillo—according to several city council members—pressured the council to approve a lawsuit settlement with clear channel and others that was widely seen as a giveaway to the sign companies, this is hardly surprising.

the chuck stops here

senator chuck hagel says we need a "radical" change to our country's healthcare system.
fixing the nation's health care system will take a radical solution, one that neither presidential candidate -- or congress -- is willing to make, according to sen. chuck hagel.

at a health care forum in lincoln with former sen. bob kerrey, hagel said the current candidates' proposals don't go far enough. - ketv7 omaha
"this is not a democratic problem," hagel said. "this is not a republican problem. this is an american problem. why can't we find some way together to do this?"

because health care is an american problem, hagel said it should be regulated by the federal government instead of at the state level. - kolnkgin.com

the most horrifying story of the day

all i can ask is why? why?

a homeless man is doused with gas and set ablaze in the mid-wilshire neighborhood where he'd lived for more than a decade.
he had called the multi-ethnic mid-wilshire neighborhood home for more than a decade. sitting outside a shuttered dental office near berendo and 3rd streets, the homeless man with the buddha-like frame rarely asked for money. but he got it anyway.

regulars at the california donut shop bought him coffee and doughnuts in the mornings, a couple of asian men took him for showers and a haircut, and poor central american and mexican immigrants would give him spare change or food.

...los angeles police said that someone splashed gasoline on the man and set him on fire. no arrests have been made, and investigators are still puzzling over a motive for the grisly attack.- latimes
we have had several cases here in santa barbara where the homeless are beaten for "fun." there really is no room other than hell for those who do these sorts of senseless, horrific acts.

maggie o'connell knee deep in moose crap

anchorage daily news gives us this alliteration - palin abused power

the report by investigator steve branchflower was made public late this afternoon by a 12-0 vote of the legislative council, which authorized the investigation.

branchflower's report contains four findings. the first concludes that palin violated the state's executive branch ethics act, which says that "each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust"…

the investigation also looked into whether palin dismissed public safety commissioner walt monegan because he resisted pressure to fire wooten.

in the second finding, branchflower says monegan's refusal to fire wooten was not the sole reason for his dismissal but that it was a "contributing factor." still, he said, palin's firing of monegan was "a proper and lawful exercise" of the governor's authority.

the third finding says a workers compensation claim filed by wooten was handled appropriately. number four concludes that the attorney general's office failed to comply with branchflower's aug. 6 request for information about the case in e-mails.
thanks to mudflats, our go-to blog for all things alaskan, we get finding number four:

the attorney general’s office has failed to substantially comply with my august 6, 2008 written request to governor sarah palin for information about the case in the form of emails.
of course, this won't hurt the mcmuffin/o'connell ticket w/the repubbb base because, after all, the gop considers abuse of power a pre-requisite for holding office.

but it won't help amongst the independents.

addendum: warren street, who lived in the area at which mcmuffin tried to tamper down the hatred, thinks it's "too little too late" over at they gave us a republic.

it's one thing to disagree w/your opponent. it's another thing to whip crowds into frezies of hatred. after days of both web ads and veep nominee maggie o'connell stating explicitly that obama hangs out w/terrorists, the mcmuffin campaign is shocked - shocked! - to see their supporters express rage. cnn:

the mccain campaign calls obama "too risky for america" in a new web ad that focuses on his political relationship with bill ayers, a founding member of the radical weather underground.

"barack obama and domestic terrorist bill ayers. friends. they've worked together for years. but obama tries to hide it," the announcer said in the 90-second ad.

the now-defunct weather underground was involved in bombings in the early 1970s, including attacks on the pentagon and the capitol. obama was a young child at the time of the bombings.

obama and ayers, now a university professor, met in 1995, when both worked with a nonprofit group trying to raise funds for a school improvement project and a charitable foundation. cnn's review of project records found nothing to suggest anything inappropriate in the volunteer projects in which the two men were involved. cnn fact check: is obama 'palling around with terrorists'?...

at a rally tuesday in clearwater, florida, sarah palin said obama was being "less than truthful" about his ties to ayers. "his own top adviser said they were 'certainly friendly.' ... i am just so fearful that this is not a man who sees america the way that you and i see america -- as the greatest source for good in this world," she said.

palin told the crowd that she sees "a pattern in how our opponent has talked about one of his most troubling associations." watch more of palin's comments »

one member of the palin audience in jacksonville, florida, tuesday shouted out "treason." and at another rally in the state monday, palin's mention of the obama-ayers tie caused one member to yell out: "kill him" -- though it was unclear if it was targeted at obama or ayers.

at several recent rallies, palin has stirred up crowds by mentioning the "liberal media." routinely, there are boos at every mention of the new york times and the "mainstream media," both of which are staples of palin's stump speech.

some audience members are openly hostile to members of the traveling press covering palin; one crowd member hurled a racial epithet at an african-american member of the press in clearwater, florida, on monday.
beyond that, obama was called a "traitor" by some rally supporters, and another shouted "bomb obama."

mcmuffin has tried to calm his supporters down, w/little effect. politico:

parnes reports from minnesota:

a man in the audience stood up and told mccain he's "scared" of an obama presidency and who he'd select for the supreme court.

"i have to tell you. sen. obama is a decent person and a person you don't have to be scared of as president of the united states," mccain said as the crowd booed and shouted "come on, john!"
not only are the "terrorist" accusations not working, there's a strong possibility that there could be negative blowback on mcmuffin.

well, look at that...

william f. buckley's son is voting for "that one"* obama (*: on second thought, i want no part of that whatsoever):

...dear pup once said to me sighfully after a right-winger who fancied himself a wfb protege had said something transcendently and provocatively cretinous, "you know, i've spent my entire life time separating the right from the kooks." well, the dear man did his best. at any rate, i don't have the kidney at the moment for 12,000 emails saying how good it is he's no longer alive to see his judas of a son endorse for the presidency a covert muslim who pals around with the weather underground...

don't worry, christopher, this is all good. some of my fellow lefties may take this opportunity to go ha-ha-toldja or some other nonsense, but not me. maybe a couple of years ago, but no longer. i now realize i'm in no position to do that -- not only did i go from being a moderate conservative to being a not-so-moderate liberal, mostly during awol's first term, i went from thinking i was straight to knowing i'm gay this summer. so i know very well what it's like to be wrong as hell for years on end. it's okay, dude. don't sweat over endorsing obama...

oh, skroo pitigroup -- plus, a coda...

having been a member of wachovia for several years, i find this rather amusing:

wells fargo emerged as the apparent victor in the battle for control of wachovia bank thursday night, after rival suitor citigroup broke off talks with wells fargo and federal regulators but vowed to have its day in court.

while citigroup said it plans to seek $60 billion in damages for breach of contract, it has decided not to challenge the wells fargo-wachovia deal in court... {huffpo}

$60 billion? jesus. hell hath no fury like a corporation as oversized as it is soulless scorned, it would seem. oh well.

anyway, i'm sort of glad wachovia is fading out of existence, for a personal reason: i'll never have to print stationary or anything else for that bank again. it's not that i hate the company. it's just that this logo...

...is a real big thorn in the ass to print properly and consistently. i hated having to print that thing. one rule of the trade i learned early on: beware of anything with distinct white lines...

a place to bury strangers - the falling sun

the video is from a little known but great pbs version of ursula le guin's fascinating novel the lathe of heaven.

keeping the (trooper) gate open

the alaskan supreme court will not block the final report into gov. maggie o'connell's troopergate scandal, due out tomorrow. anchorage daily news:

the alaska supreme court today rejected an attempt by a group of six republican legislators to shut down the legislature's investigation of gov. sarah palin.

the ruling means that steve branchflower, the investigator hired by the legislative council, will release his report as scheduled on friday. branchflower is looking into palin's dismissal of her public safety commissioner, walt monegan, and whether she improperly pressured him to fire a state trooper divorced from her sister.

the state supreme court rejected an appeal by texas-based liberty legal institute and anchorage attorney kevin clarkson, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the alaska republican state legislators opposed to their colleagues' investigation.

the state legislators whose names appeared on the appeal attempting to stop the investigation are wes keller, mike kelly, fred dyson, tom wagoner, carl gatto and bob lynn.
it should make for an interesting read tomorrow, because o'connell's husband "dude" has finally testified in the matter. and tho he insists he never pressured anyone to fire o'connell's ex-brother-in-law wooten, the adn sez otherwise:

the 25-page statement from gov. sarah palin's husband, in response to questions submitted by the investigator, shows that todd palin's efforts started before his wife became governor and accelerated during the first 19 months of her administration.

todd palin was waging the campaign against his ex-brother-in-law, state trooper mike wooten, who had divorced the governor's sister in 2006 and who is involved in an ongoing custody fight.

one reason not to vote a straight ticket

it might not be counted in sante fe, new mexico.

a glitch that would have kept votes from being counted in the presidential and other top-of-the-ticket races was discovered during a pre-election check of a voting machine in santa fe county, officials said.

the error was found friday and corrected the same day, said denise lamb, who heads the elections bureau in the county clerk's office.

the problem in the coding of the machine's memory card would have prevented the tabulating machine from counting the votes in the presidential, u.s. senate and 3rd district congressional races when democrats or republicans marked their ballots indicating they wanted to vote a straight ticket.

...heavily democratic santa fe county was the only county in which the problem occurred, according to automated election services, which prints ballots, codes memory cards and provides other election assistance to the state and counties. - ap and wired news.

senator sundowning?

i had a temp job at a retirement home several years back, and i learned so much about the elderly that, as a "lay person", i had no clue about, especially the condition "sundowning." watching grampy mcsame last night at the "debate" - angry. aggitated. sarcastic. caustic. disconnected from the truth and reality. hostile. wandering around the stage. aggressive.....i was seeing a touch of behaviour that i had seen before....at the rest home.
people with diseases such as alzheimer's often have behavior problems in the late afternoon and evening. they may become demanding, suspicious, upset or disoriented, see or hear things that are not there and believe things that aren't true. or they may pace or wander around the house.....

..."sundowning" is often accompanied by "shadowing," where the person with alzheimer's follows or mimics the caregiver, or talks, interrupts, and asks questions repeatedly.- alzheimer's association of los angeles
dr. maria sullivan, associate professor of clinical psychiatry, at columbia university and the new york state psychiatric Institute, explained that all elderly people exhibit some age-related cognitive decline, even if it cannot be termed dementia. therefore, even a minimal mental degeneration may predispose someone to sundowning. - careconnection.com
