Fully automatic upgrades of your WordPress blog

Current version: 1.0-beta2

Diese Seite ist nur auf Englisch verfügbar. (Sie darf aber gerne auf Deutsch kommentiert werden.)

Upgrading web applications is annoying – but not for WordPress users! Using the InstantUpgrade plugin, you can easily and safely upgrade your WordPress automatically, with a single click.

How does it work?

The InstantUpgrade plugin downloads the latest WordPress version from the WordPress server and unpacks it at your server. In the next step, it deletes all of your old WordPress files (except wp-content/ and wp-config.php) and puts the new files into your WordPress directory. Finally, it runs the database upgrade script. That procedure is exactly what the official guide proposes, only 30 times faster and with you leaning back.

Is it safe to use?

Yes. The plugin interfaces are very intuitive, everything is well explained. Before the upgrade process, comprehensive checks are performed to ensure that nothing can be broken. As for security: The plugin cannot do anything that you or your webserver couldn’t do anyway. So, yes, it is safe to use. (However, bad things can *always* happen, so you should always have backups of your database and files.)

Overview

Installation

Attention:

Upgrading a web application is a critical task. And although InstantUpgrade is mature software, things could go wrong. Please be sure to have working backups. This page features the new and very convenient version 1.0, but it’s not as well-tested as the older version 0.2, which you should use if you are rather unexperienced with web applications. You should not use this plugin when you installed WordPress from third party sources (e.g. via Fantastico).

Download it. Unpack it and upload it into your WordPress plugins folder. Activate the plugin in your admin panel. Go to Options » InstantUpgrade and pick an upgrade method. FTP is usually recommended. See below for more about HTTP/FTP. When the plugin says that you’re ready to upgrade, go to Manage » InstantUpgrade and start the upgrade process. The interface should be self-explanatory.

Upgrading from an older version

Although there is nothing specifially wrong with earlier versions, you might want to upgrade to the latest version. If you are upgrading from v0.2 or earlier to v1.0 or later, first open the file legacy/chmod.php in a text editor, read the instructions and follow them. Then delete the old plugin directory and proceed with a new Installation.

HTTP vs. FTP

InstantUpgrade offers two different methods for replacing your WordPress files: HTTP and FTP. With HTTP, the webserver will delete and insert all files. This works only on a small part of the web hosts, because usually the webserver and you (i.e. FTP user) are two different system users who are not allowed to modify each other’s files.

For you this means that if you select HTTP on the first configuration and the plugin says that all neccessary files are writable, you may use the HTTP method. If not, you should use the FTP method. If for some reasons you cannot or don’t want to use the FTP method and prefer HTTP, you must make your WordPress installation is writable by the webserver (only once; after the first upgrade with HTTP, the files are under control of the webserver).

(Yes, the sceenshots show an upgrade from WP 2.3.3 to WP 2.3.3 – but that’s ok. InstantUpgrade can also be used to re-install your current version.)

Translations

There are no translations for v1.0 yet. Please have some more patience.

First test at www.macnightowl.com worked fine via FTP .

Thanks for the update.

BTW: What plugin do you use for tags?

Peace,
Gene

Alex Günsche am 11. Februar 2008 um 09:44 #

Hello Gene, thanks for your courage to be the first to test, and thanks for the feedback! :)

As for tags, I don’t use tags on this blog (it runs on the stable 2.0 series). But on another blog, I run Simple Tagging.

Matt - Alpha2Beta blog am 12. Februar 2008 um 14:14 #

Hi Alex, thanks for a great plugin.
I just installed your plugin and everything ran smoothly.

BTW, I will be making a donation, first I will write a post about the plugin, it deserves a good write up!

Thanks

Alex Günsche am 12. Februar 2008 um 15:14 #

Hi Matt, thanks for testing, too. And a donation sure would be nice! :)

Alex Günsche am 12. Februar 2008 um 18:17 #

NOTE to testers: The next days, there will be a second beta, which will no longer save the FTP password. Due to a discussion on this issue, I decided that it might be better, from a security view, not to save the password.

Alex Günsche am 14. Februar 2008 um 00:19 #

Ok. beta2 is out now. There are no big differences, except the FTP password is no longer saved on the server.

Betsy Finn am 14. Februar 2008 um 18:41 #

Hi Alex — nice plugin. I tried configuring using Firefox and the FTP configuration test failed without exception. Tried using your plugin with IE — and configuration test ran fine (as well as upgrade).

Aside from that hold-up, I’ve completed my WP upgrade and everything seems to be fine. Thanks!

Alex Günsche am 14. Februar 2008 um 18:51 #

Hi Betsy, thanks for your feedback! As for the Firefox miss, could it be that this was directly after selecting FTP, before you even entered any FTP data?

Betsy Finn am 14. Februar 2008 um 21:54 #

Alex —

I thought that could’ve been the case, but I did make sure to completely enter the FTP data (double-checked for correctness)… which still resulted in same failure.

The only thing I can think of is that I did recently download Firefox version 2.0.012 (just released 2/7/08)

Alf am 15. Februar 2008 um 12:36 #

Just what I needed right now :) Thank you so much!

Betsy Finn am 15. Februar 2008 um 23:55 #

Resolved the problem. It was due to having fireftp open in the same window (different tab) — once I closed the fireftp plugin, then I was able to use instant upgrade with firefox.

:D

chronicchick am 16. Februar 2008 um 07:44 #

Hi,
Will this tool replace any old wordpress versions? Ie I uploaded the new version and I don’t think I got rid of the old version? the admin panel is still saying I need to update… Ugh.. I am still learning wordpress? Is there a way to not mix the old with new.

Alex Günsche am 16. Februar 2008 um 12:04 #

Betsy, thanks for finding this out and reporting back! :) Let’s hope it will help other users, too.

chronicchick: The reason why you see that warning could be that your WordPress hasn’t updated this information yet.

chronicchick am 17. Februar 2008 um 00:17 #

Will downloading the instant upgrade take away what I don’t need and put in what I neeed?

Alex Günsche am 17. Februar 2008 um 12:41 #

chronicchick: Yes, when you perform a successful upgrade or reinstallation with the plugin, you will have an out-of-the-box WordPress (wp-content/ and wp-config.php are preserved, of course).

Paul am 21. Februar 2008 um 17:47 #

Instant Upgrade works as advertised, no problems! - Thank you.

After spending many hours building my site, I was aprehensive to upgrade Wordpress from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3, particularly after reading the upgrade path. Too much work. Found your plugin, took about a minute. Done.

danny am 22. Februar 2008 um 10:58 #

i am running an old version 2.03 i would like to upgrade but my host says i can’t cos the host cant handle the new version Is this true or not ?

Alex Günsche am 22. Februar 2008 um 14:23 #

danny: This is possible. WordPress 2.1 and higher need more higher PHP and MySQL versions. But you can use InstantUpgrade to upgrade to WordPress 2.0.11, which is the latest version of the still maintained 2.0.x branch of WordPress.

Jay McGillicuddy am 23. Februar 2008 um 02:08 #

I am receiving this error. Any help would be appreciated. i am using the HTTP method.

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class pclzip in /hsphere/local/home/acemaker/jaymcgillicuddy.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/instantupgrade/lib/pclzip/pclzip.php on line 162

Thanks Jay

Alex Günsche am 23. Februar 2008 um 10:47 #

You appear to have another plugin running that uses PCLZIP. Please deactivate that first.

Btw, it is not good that this other plugin always loads PCLZIP. It should load this huge piece of code only when it’s needed. Please send the author of that other plugin a message to revisit his code, so it loads this class only when it’s needed for a specific action of his plugin.

Jay McGillicuddy am 24. Februar 2008 um 18:02 #

Thank you, much appreciated.

Jay McGillicuddy am 24. Februar 2008 um 18:06 #

I forgot to deactivate all my plugins before I used your plugin and once I deactivated them all and only activated yours it worked like a charm.

Thank You, Jay

Chris am 26. Februar 2008 um 12:16 #

I successfully installed your plugin, but can’t seem to connect using FTP. The details are correct but an error message always appears saying that the plugin can’t create a “work folder within the plugin directory.

Any ideas?

Alex Günsche am 26. Februar 2008 um 12:57 #

Chris, could you please post the exact error message? Can you also tell me what kind of FTP server and operating system you have on your host (or give me a link, so I can try to find out myself)?

Rob Cubbon am 28. Februar 2008 um 19:32 #

HI Alex,
I’m getting “Setting host failed” – I’m sure my details are correct. Using Firefox and Safari on the Mac and have deactivated all other plugins.

Alex Günsche am 28. Februar 2008 um 19:37 #

What FTP server type do you have? can you connect to the server via Telnet? Is the FTP server reachable under the same hostname and IP?

Btw, I’ve taken the liberty to remove the advertising part from your “name”, and (as a little lesson), I’ve also removed your URL. Try it again, and I will feed you to Akismet.

Matt - Alpha2Beta Blog am 29. Februar 2008 um 18:47 #

Hi Alex, as promised I have made you a small donation to help you with future developments. Email me when you receive the payment and perhaps we can set up some good backlinks etc.
Cheers

Alex Günsche am 29. Februar 2008 um 19:08 #

Thank you very much for your (not so small) donation! :)
I sent you an e-mail.

Hello Alex,

I can’t upgrade WP cause of following the error;

# Downloading file http://wordpress.org/latest.zip failed. HTTP status code: 13.
# Error: It was not possible to retrieve the remote file http://wordpress.org/latest.zip.

HTTP and FTP are the same result. http://wordpress.org/latest.zip is working via Firefox download, but via the instant upgrade plugin. Could you any advise to solve it?

Thanks,

Soleh

Francis am 14. März 2008 um 07:32 #

Hi Alex,

The problem i keep encountering is that the path to my WordPress installation seems to be incorrect. All the wordpress files are in a folder called ‘geils’, so in the FTP path to WordPress: box i put /geils/.
The error i get is: FTP configuration test failed.
The path seems to be incorrect, a WordPress installation was not found.
How do i write the correct path?

Thank you

Francis

Alex Günsche am 14. März 2008 um 12:04 #

Francis, I might not have understood you correctly: Is the directory /geils/ in your FTP root? You must enter the path relative to your FTP root, not relative to the vHost’s document root.

Hello again,

Using current beta version and my 0.2 version, it says updated, but the WP is still version 2.3.3. What wrong%

Thanks for your support.

Alex Günsche am 19. März 2008 um 00:32 #

What option did you select, latest or arbitrary version? If you selected latest, then of course you will get 2.3.3, because wordpress.org/latest.zip is WP 2.3.3 at this time.

Adam Kayce am 19. März 2008 um 15:00 #

Awesome; it even worked with the 2.5-RC1 version. Great plugin!

This plugin sounds great - but can you explain why it cannot be used with Fantastico setups? I initially installed WordPress using Fantastico. However, I had to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress manually - which was tedious. Ideally, in future I’d like to be able to use your plugin.

By the way, I’ve implemented your Advanced Search plugin and I think it’s great!

Alex Günsche am 20. März 2008 um 19:43 #

I once had a case where somebody tried to upgrade from Fantastico to regular WordPress and had a bad crash (luckily, he had good backups). As I cannot test with Fantastico myself, I can only warn people to try it.

However, if you already upgraded to regular WordPress, the plugin should work for you. I’d say, give it a try. :)

Thanks,

Tristan am 31. März 2008 um 04:02 #

Hi Alex,

This looks like just the plugin I have been waiting for. Unfortunately, I keep getting the error, “Cannot open wp-content/plugins/instantupgrade/work/latest.zip” when I try to upgrade. Everything before that point works fine. I have checked to make sure the /work directory is writable by the FTP user, and it is (permissions are set at 755). Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks,
Tristan

Si am 3. April 2008 um 00:48 #

Awesome! Went from 2.3.1 to 2.5 with no problems.

The only hitch I had, which isn’t this plugin’s fault, was my host’s apache user is in a different group to my ftp user, so I had to change permissions on the instantupgrade directory to allow it to write to the work directory.

Björn am 3. April 2008 um 10:04 #

Hi Alex,

Hi there,

i tested your Instantupgrade and it is great. Only one thing I want to ask:
Because of that I’m a German user I want Instantupgrade not to go for the english Version of wordpress. I want it to upgrade the german version from wordpress-deutschland.org
Where can I change the Source to do so?!?!
Thanks for a quick answer

greets Lyus

Alex Günsche am 3. April 2008 um 18:04 #

Tristan: I remember to have had the same problem on a host of mine. I’m investigating.

Ray: Please deactivate your plugins by temporarily renaming /wp-content/plugins/.

Björn: Bitte ebenfalls testweise /wp-content/plugins/ umbenennen.

Ever considered adding backup as a step in this process?

C Pagani am 4. April 2008 um 18:02 #

All the tests went fine but when I did the actual upgrade all I got was the “Performing upgrade…” notice with the spinning icon, for like 20 minutes now. All the warnings against closing the window scare me. But looking at my site by opening another window it appears that the old version of wordpress is still running without any problems.

Obviously, if my site survives this, I will have to do a totally manual upgrade.

I tried to use instant upgrade and received this message.

Something to do with the provider, perhaps?

# Cannot open wp-content/plugins/instantupgrade/work/wordpress-2.5.zip
# The upgrade process has been aborted, no modifications to your files or databases were applied.

Patricia am 8. April 2008 um 07:05 #

Hi!

This plug-in looks like just what I need. I have my blog on Yahoo Small Business, and even though the documentation says that there is a button for automatic upgrades it isn’t there (I guess old documentation?).

I heard that it’s difficult to upgrade on Yahoo, has anyone tried this plug-in there? (I’ll be upgrading from 2.2 to 2.5). How did it go?

Cheers,
P.

Celebrity am 8. April 2008 um 09:12 #

Fantastic plugin, It saved me lots of work, thank a lot.

Patricia am 8. April 2008 um 18:51 #

@Dick Smith
It sounds like you uploaded your plugin to the plugin folder as a zipped file (as the message you got includes the extension .zip). Did you unzip it before you uploaded it up to the plugins directory on your wordpress?

Samsung am 9. April 2008 um 02:54 #

I’m asking myself why the plugin is not able to use FILESYSTEM next to HTTP and FTP. Wouldn’t it be possible to provide this as the first of three methods?

Alex Günsche am 9. April 2008 um 09:35 #

Samsung: What do you think is the difference between “filesystem” and HTTP? ;)

YoufulFill am 9. April 2008 um 14:39 #

This is a great plugin.

Kev am 10. April 2008 um 22:36 #

I keep getting this message
# Cannot open wp-content/plugins/instantupgrade/work/wordpress-2.5.zip
The upgrade process has been aborted, no modifications to your files or databases were applied.

Contrary to what Patricia thinks the .zip extension has nothing to do with the plugin being uploaded as a zip it is the extension of the wordpress installation that instant upgrade downloaded to install.

Why cant instant upgrade open the wordpress-2.5.zip?

Kev am 10. April 2008 um 23:31 #

Got this figured out
if you get this error :# Cannot open wp-content/plugins/instantupgrade/work/wordpress-2.5.zip

chmod the Work folder to 777 and it should work. then you can chmod it back when your finished.

Jerry am 11. April 2008 um 08:55 #

I see a few comments mentioning problems unzipping (amidst all the raves about how well the plugin works) but no answers. How about a little pity for those of us who seem to be clueless?

John Baker am 11. April 2008 um 12:36 #

I like this. It works quickly and easily once it’s set up. I just used it to upgrade to 2.5.
But I’m not sure how it works, even after reading the notes above. It obviously uploads and installs the new WP upgrade on my server, otherwise it wouldn’t work. But does it also put duplicates of those files on my own ‘local’ computer? Or do I have to do that?

Lamp am 11. April 2008 um 22:39 #

You just rocked with this!
Congrats!
You solved my life!

Michael am 16. April 2008 um 08:41 #

For those of you having trouble unzipping the file try downloading it with a browser other than IE. I was getting errors unzipping the file so I tried downloading in Opera and the file unzipped with no problem.

Good Luck! Nice work Alex.

Michael am 16. April 2008 um 15:37 #

I’ve been trying to get this plugin to work but to no avail. When it starts in http mode everything seems fine but on the progress page I just see ‘Instant Upgrade’ at the the top of the page and the rest of the page stays blank. I have left the screen idle for 10 minutes just to make sure but nothing…

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am using Instant Upgrade to go from 2.5 to 2.5.1

I have deactivated all plug-ins and backed up both my database and content folders. I reactivated Instant Upgrade and tried to run the routine. I get this error message:

I am trying to upgrade from Wordpress 2.5 to 2.5.1.
I use the FTP method to upgrade. The Instant Update plugin shows that everything is fine with the upgrade (Result: Everything went smooth. Have fun with your new WordPress version!) , however it shows these two errors:

Warning: include(/home/simon/public_html/blog/wp-admin/admin-footer.php) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/simon/public_html/blog/wp-admin/admin.php on line 72

Warning: include() [function.include]: Failed opening ‘/home/simon/public_html/blog/wp-admin/admin-footer.php’ for inclusion (include_path=’.:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/simon/public_html/blog/wp-admin/admin.php on line 72

Now, when I get to the admin page of my blog, I see an empty page. As if some files in wp-admin/ got corrupted.

To fix, I need to refresh manually at least the wp-admin directory which enables the Admin pages in Wordpress. However, it appears I need to upgrade this time manually…

Hi Alex, thanks for this great plugin, I’ve used it on several sites and it’s very useful. The only problem is that now I am putting all my sites under version control with SubVersion and when I use this plugin it deletes the .svn folders which are in the wp-admin and wp-includes folders- is there any way of modifying the code to exclude the folders or setting permissions on them which will stop them from being deleted while the plugin upgrades WP?

thanks in advance

Guy

Wow, this is amazing. I just updated from 2.1 to 2.5.1 (yeah, yeah, I know, lazy), and it went off without a hitch. I have about 8 plugins running, and after re-activating them, they all seem to be okey-dokey.
Nice job!

Maura am 20. Mai 2008 um 16:55 #

Brilliant! I also upgraded from 2.1 to 2.5.1 (Andy…you’re not the only lazy one!) ;) It was a smooth and quick process!

Alex: Many Thanks! I blogged about the plugin as well as donated!

Take care,

Excellent plug-in! I upgraded my personal blog to the newest Wordpress software, after being stuck with version 2.0.2 offered from Yahoo web hosting for the last two years. This plug-in is very helpful, and works with Yahoo Web Hosting (although I had to use the http upgrading method). Thanks!!!

Hi Alex! I wasn’t able to upgrade my wordpress ;(

Upgrade method: FTP.
Error details: # Cannot open wp-content/plugins/instantupgrade/work/latest.zip
# The upgrade process has been aborted, no modifications to your files or databases were applied.

I checked /work/ directory but there was no latest.zip file I attached the latest version of WP manually and tried to upgrade my version again but no success.

Please help me to solve this problem. Thank you in advance.

What a wonderfull plugin! So glad I stumbled upon it, I had a site running version 2.0.4, with so many errors. I was too concerned to try and manually upgrade it. I just sutmbled on your plugin and decided to give it ago, backed up everything first ran the setup and within under 1 minute it said it had completed. I checked the homepage and it looked exactly the same. Thinking it hadn’t worked I refreshed the admin and was welcomed with the fresh new admin colors.

Wow that was so easy thanks alot for the for the fantastic plugin!

Any thoughts?

webguy am 25. Juni 2008 um 21:36 #

For those of you who have the problem “Connecting to the FTP host failed†but are sure your FTP login credentials are correct, my host had to enable DNS doctoring on the firewall to get it to work.

That solved the FTP login problem, but now the script error is stating

“The path seems to be incorrect, a WordPress installation was not found.”

My Wordpress installation is at the root so the path is correct (left it blank) so any ideas on how to correct this error?

webguy am 25. Juni 2008 um 21:57 #

I fixed the above problem by adding “/httpdocs/” to the FTP path and it worked. Hope this helps someone else.

With 2.6 upon us, I would absolutely love for this plug in to work. Like it did when I went to 2.5, Instant Upgrader simply fails to work in either http or ftp mode. Http is most frustrating. It okays all the settings. It goes through as though something is happening, takes roughly 30 seconds to load and then… nothing. Just a blank site admin page and no change at all. If anyone else has experienced this, I’d love to hear about it.

Thanks :)

I installed the plugin and successfully connected to FTP. Finally, when I click “upgrade my wordpress!” on

Is there any way to use that plugin without disable php safemode?

Alex Günsche am 16. August 2008 um 13:10 #

Björn: several users reported they were able to use IU despite the Safe Mode. You can try hacking the plugin and disable the Safe Mode checks, but don’t blame me if you break your WordPress installation.

David Kabal am 16. August 2008 um 17:20 #

I upgraded my site using InstantUpgrade… No problems. I upgraded my wife’s site using InstantUpgrade. It *said* everything went smoothly. Then I got a few blank pages. I went to the wp-admin subpage, it said “Database Upgrade Required”. I clicked the button to Upgrade WordPress, then a WP logo on a blank page. I’ve tried multiple times, the site is still down (cassie.kabal.org) and nothing is happening. Please help.

Thanks,
Dave

Alex Günsche am 16. August 2008 um 18:25 #

David, please try deactivating all plugins (temporarily rename the plugins directory) and try again. If that doesn’t help, please try switching to the default theme (rename all other themes in themes). Please let me know if that helped.

David Kabal am 19. August 2008 um 07:32 #

Alex:

Now another site is down (david.kabal.org) after using IU to upgrade from 2.6 to 2.6.1. (i.e., my previous report saying david.kabal.org was working was premature)

I tried all the steps you recommended (I e renamed plugins, renamed all other themes other than default).

I’m really quite down now with both websites not working. Help would be much appreciated!

I can’t get into the admin page, or indeed anything else. Everything is blank!

Thanks,
Dave

David Kabal am 19. August 2008 um 07:42 #

Update…. It appears ALL my websites are down…. (even those using another CMS) Seems to be just a coincidence that this occurred after InstantUpgrade. Sorry for the trouble.

David Kabal am 19. August 2008 um 18:54 #

OK, got my site back up and working (problem turned out to be an upgrade AND a host problem). For anyone else experiencing the following series of events, here’s the symptoms and solutions:

- Upgrade using Instantupgrade
- Try to connect to admin “database needs to be upgraded”
- Click “upgrade”
- Blank WP logo

No pages or content anywhere. Per Alex:

- rename plugins to plugins-
- Try to connect to admin “database needs to be upgraded”
- Click “upgrade”
- Succeeds
- rename plugins- back to plugins
- reactivate plugins

Cheers,
Dave

So sorry using your contact form to ask for support. :)

Hi,

Such a great plugin you have. Unfortunately, i was unable to configure my FTP account data after filling all the required fields. Can i know what’s went wrong?

I’ve input all the corrects data in it. But the message prompt “FTP configuration test failed” when i clicked ‘test and save’ button.

Oh, can you specify which wordpress files that i need to make it FTP writable? I already change all the file attributions to writable but again, it didn’t work.

Really need your help. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your attention.

Thank you, this plugin completely fucked up my site, I am reinstalling WordPress by hand as I write this.

Dave am 15. September 2008 um 07:31 #

I suppose I should have thought about it beforehand but this plugin totally tore down my wordpress MU site.
this plug in needs to check for the version of existing WP and what flavor the files are and alert the user before any destructive actions are taken.
shame really as it looks quite good.
i’m not that annoyed as the site was still being built up, but that is a serious fault in the plugin not being able to figure out the correct for either the latest MU or single user built.

Jennifer am 19. September 2008 um 18:54 #

So just that I am clear.

If we use the this InstantUpgrade plugin, it was mentioned that

“when you perform a successful upgrade or reinstallation with the plugin, you will have an out-of-the-box WordPress (wp-content/ and wp-config.php are preserved, of course).”

What happens to all the contents of our blog and all the other plugins we use. Will all that information still be there?

Jennifer am 19. September 2008 um 18:57 #

Try /public_html/blog

Hope this helps.

Logs showed nothing. Any idea what I should check to find the problem?
