Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, August 21, 2008.

Typhoon Nuri will continue to track northwestward and is expected to remain south of Taiwan on Thursday. Before reaching mainland China, the storm will intensify as poleward outflow is expected to override low ocean heat content and strengthen the system. The system is expected to intensify into a category three storm by Thursday morning before making landfall on the southeastern coast of China Friday morning.

In China, a band of showers will continue moving through central and southeastern regions on Thursday. Beijing will see showers and warm temperatures, with a high of 77(F)/ 25(C). Countries along the southeastern coast will remain predominantly dry before Nuri makes landfall on Friday.

Northern China will see heavy rainfall and possible storms as a low pressure system moves north of Shanghai. The system is expected to move into the Korean Peninsula late Thursday evening. Meanwhile, Japan will continue to see overcast conditions with scattered showers throughout the day. Tokyo will see possible showers and will remain hot with a high of 87(F)/ 31(C).

Monsoon showers are expected to persist from India through Cambodia and in the Pacific Islands. Heaviest showers are expected to occur in Thailand and Myanmar.

To the south, a band of showers will push through southeastern Australia bringing cooler temperatures to much of the southeast. Sydney will see overcast conditions and will reach a high of 68(F)/ 20(C). The remainder of Australia see fair conditions as high pressure remains over the area.

Winds have fallen, central pressure is closer to tropical depression strength, and there is no eye structure left. The current ragged look is best demonstrated on radar:Figure 1. Melbourne NEXRAD ...
