In a recent survey of the 250 members of the Whitby fishing forum The Daiwa Slosh 30 was voted as the number one rock fishing reel. The Penn 525 series came a close second and the Abu 7000 reels was voted the third most popular by the forum members.

The Daiwa Slosh 30 was voted the number one reel for rock fishing in the north east by 38.1% of the members of the Whitby fishing forum. Forum member Rob says "You can get the sloshes for £60 now if you shop about. Fast retrieve, easily tuned, tough and cheap, what more could you want ?You could buy 3 for the price of a calcutta.
In second place (and my favourite) - The Penn 525 Mag Series - A True Rock Fishing Reel.
The Penn 525 mag series was voted as second best rock fishing reel by 23.8% of the members of the Whitby fishing forum. This is my personal favourite reel. Baramundi Bob from the forum says "525 mag, daiwa 25 pound sensor to a 60 pound leader with a bimini twist. I wouldn't go back to an abu now. Lots of people I talk to say the couldn't be bothered to retie a leader when they were fishing but the truth of the matter is you hardly ever have to because the leader takes all the abrasion and you hardly ever snap off"
Abu 7000 Series Not far off Being The Ultimate Rock Fishing Reel.
14.3% of the rock anglers voted this as the best reel for rock fishing on the north east coast. With the endorsement of top local matchman Ray Maddison the reel has to be one of the best. Ray (Ramrod) from the Whitby fishing forum says - "I've tried a few different reels but keep going back to the Abu 7000 series. At the moment I'm using a couple of 7000cs pro rockets which are an excellent reel with stronger handles than the 7000cs and aluminium spools which don't fur up then pit like the old ones, shame they don't have the brass side plates though! I always take my Abu Morrum with me to use as back up but hardly ever use it, they were so close to making the ultimate reel there but it just lacks in the casting department due to the oversize bearings."
