John Lewis on McCain/Pailin

The Congressman from the 5th District likened McSame/Failin to George Wallace.

I am deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign. What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.

During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama.

McSame called Lewis' comment "shocking and beyond the pale". Remember it wasn't too long ago that McCain said Lewis was one of the people he would consult if he were to win the election.

Speculation on Turnout Demographics

I've been hearing all kinds of numbers being thrown around and I wanted to start with just one..... 35% White turnout for Obama.

Now I am a 'Hopemonger' and all and would love to see this but I gotta think that is a bit high, even with the large number of young voters in Georgia. I've got a whole slew of other numbers but my paranoia keeps me from discussing them in an open forum.

Ok, I'm sure Huttman will drop by to drop a few pearls....

Holy Moses! Astonishing African American Voter Turnout In GA!!

Yesterday Markos Moulitsas posted a commentary on DKos regarding the GA-Sen race, noting that progressive Democratic challenger Jim Martin is essentially tied in the polls with His Evilness Saxby Chambliss. He also noted that polling may likely be significantly underestimating African American turnout to be in the range of 24-27%. From a purely anecdotal perpective from the ground, I can say that Kos is absolutely correct that those numbers may be significantly underestimating African American turnout. In fact, IMHO the African American turnout in GA will be a total blowout!

Obama Campaign tops Voter Registration Goal

I'm hearing that the Obama campaign surpassed their statewide goal by over 30,000 yesterday. This is sure to help our down ticket candidates if we get voters to go all the way down the ballot. Steve Hildebrand was quoted the other day as saying that Georgia was their top registration state as for as surpassing expectations.

Another number I heard yesterday scared the hell out of me...over 100,000 and as many as 300,000 Reg.forms still have to be processed. I hope that is not the case

http://www.keatingeconomics.com/is a new website out bringing the old Keating 5 story to light as a tool of comparison with the current financial crisis.

Personally I think this is brilliant and like to see a Democrat fighting back for a change. I think it has a lot to do with Jim Martin's success of late and if McCain is going to bring up the William Ayers bullshit I say go for it.

That Gov. Barnes Interview

Gov. Barnes, the 80th Governor of Georgia, thought it would be a good idea to let me interview him. Man do I love procrastinating...

Highlights of the interview I did with Governor Barnes are below. You will have to go here to read it in full. It shold be up in the early afternoon (hey, I told him that's who I was conducting the interview for!)

I can't believe how big of a journalistic failure I was after the Jim Martin quesiton. For some reason, I just didn't even think of asking a follow up. (BTW: if my boss is reading this, I am always an excellent journo).

Confirming What was Already Said

OK, so maybe DSCC was right.

Saxby Chambliss, a Republican, leads Martin, a Democrat, by two points, 46 percent to 44 percent.

Thirteen days ago, Chambliss led the challenger by 17 points, 53 percent to 36 percent. Chambliss lost seven points in the latest polling and Martin picked up eight points.

Because the margin of error for both polls is 3.8 percent, the poll shows that Georgia's U.S. Senate race is effectively tied.

Does Obama have a shot? Not so much. That isn't to say there is no good news for BHO.

According to the SurveyUSA poll released Tuesday, John McCain leads Obama by eight points, 52 percent to 44 percent.

McCain held a 16-point lead in the Peach State 13 days ago, according to the last SurveyUSA poll.

BTW: Gov. Barnes said Obama is an impressive candidate with "the most impressive" operation he's seen in a Presidential race. Barnes added that he thinks Obama can carry Georgia.

Yeah, sorry for not yet transcribing that interview. I should really get on that.

Jim Marshall on the Bailout

CNN published a piece this morning online by Georgia's own Congressman Jim Marshall (D-Macon). He has a very interesting analysis of the situation.

Deep down, we all know that a financial rescue is necessary. I voted for the plan that was defeated today because, to paraphrase Rep. Spencer Bachus, I'm unwilling to play Russian roulette with the financial lives of my children and grandchildren. Although the bill was imperfect and wildly unpopular, I believed that those of us in Congress needed to suck it up, vote for it and let the chips fall where they may.

He also looks at the specific policy implications of the bill in addition to the broader effects it may have down the road.

My own strong preference is that it focus less on acquiring mortgage-backed securities and be more of a tightly focused effort to minimize foreclosures and home vacancies that drive down property values for all of us. For these non-prime mortgage notes, I would give bankruptcy courts the power to modify mortgage payments to make them more realistic. I would limit the pay of not only top Wall Street executives but the traders who made millions by making this problem worse.

Many have accused Marshall in the past of voting against the party to score cheap points. While I certainly don't agree with several past votes of his (S-CHIP in particular), he got this one right for sure and gives us a great defense for it. It refreshing to see someone think outside the box in this debate and put national interests first. I think he does the right thing in recognizing the economy as a whole needs the help of the government. While this bill would be better with stricter regulations on CEO benefits from the package, he is right to look ahead and realize that future generations (like mine) need a vibrant economy as we enter the workforce.
