Background
Tina Turner is an eight time Grammy winner who has spent her life as a professional singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress. The multi-talented leading lady was born in Nutbush, Tennessee in 1939 as Anna Mae Bullock. She met Ike Turner in her late teens and the two formed The Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Her stage name was changed to Tina after a character in Sheena: Queen of the Jungle. Ike and Tina married in 1962 in Mexico City.
Turner rose to fame as an impressive based on an impressive stage singer and dancer throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s despite the change in the musical landscape. She and Ike recorded several hit singles, including “A FollIn Loveâ€, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fineâ€, “I Idolize You†and “River Deep, Mountain Highâ€.
The rise on the ‘60s ushered in a difficult personal life in the ‘70s, as Ike was addicted to drugs and became very abusive. Declining album sales did not help, and Tina ran away from Ike in 1976. She divorced Ike in 1978, but kept her stage name Tina Turner.
Still struggling in the United States, she found great success in Europe and the rest of the world in the ‘80s. Tina made her big comeback at home with the release of Private Dancer. The album sold 20 million copies world wide, making it one of the best selling albums of all time. Turner also won a litany of awards from the Billboard Music Awards, the American Music Awards, and the Grammy’s over the next couple of years for her solo work and her duets with other established stars.
She continued to sing and draw in huge audiences as she toured the world. Of the eight solo albums she released after her triumphant comeback, by far the most successful have been “Break Every Rule†and “All the Bestâ€. Tina Turner also made a permanent mark on the big screen with roles in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and What’s Love Got to Do With It.
