Memorial Day - A Day of Prayer for Permanent Peace

This coming Memorial many will take the opportunity to voice their disapproval of the War in Iraq. Lost in the shouting of anti-war slogans and sardonic cries of patriotism will be the meaning of Memorial Day. Lost in the day will be the countless stories that Veterans from other wars have to share with us. Lost in the day will be those protesters pausing for a moment of thanksgiving that America’s soldiers, Seaman, Airmen and Marines have afforded them the freedom to protest. Finally, lost in this most important of days is the reason for Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, originally called, “Decoration Day,” is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. Though there are many variations as to its actual beginnings, there is evidence that this holiday was celebrated as far back as the Civil War when women’s groups in the South decorated the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers.

While Waterloo, New York, was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966 with proclamation 3727 where he purposed the day as a “day of prayer for permanent peace,” original beginnings are often credited to General John Logan, the national commander of the grand Army of the Republic in 1868. On May 30, 1868, flowers were placed at the graves of the Union and Confederate soldiers at the Arlington National Cemetery. Even during the tumultuous times of the 1860s, General Logan realized the importance of a day that was not about division, but rather, about reconciliation and the coming together of a country to honor and remember all of those who gave their lives. In his General Order Number 11 of May 5, 1868, Logan wrote, “Let no vandalism or avarice or neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten, as a people, the cost of a free and undivided republic.

It is ironic that even during such a time as the Civil War, the most divisive time in American history, Americans realized that honoring the war dead was important. Throughout history, America has been involved in wars and the military men and women have always answered the call, regardless of the times, regardless of the enemy and regardless of how far from home they ventured. These brave men and women have sacrificed their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have, often times going unnoticed unappreciated and facing difficult lives when they return home from the battle fields.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan shared this comment on Memorial Day while at Arlington National Cemetery, “Today, as in the past, there are problems that must be solved and challenges that must be met. We can tackle them with our full strength and creativity only because we are free to work them out in our own way. We owe this freedom of choice and action to those men and women in uniform who have served this nation and its interest in time of need. I don’t have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is. Every time we hear, watch or read the news, we are reminded that liberty is a rare commodity in this world.” How remarkable that in 1983, some 24 years ago, that these comments would be so salient.
