As of now (about noon California time) the iPhone 2.0 software update hasn’t officially launched yet, but everyone who cares knows that for the last five hours they could download v.2.0 anyway and access the App Store.
Early download stats are coming in on the most popular apps. We’ve divided these into two lists, one for paid apps and one for free apps (there’s a big difference in download numbers). We’ll update for comparison purposes in 24 hours or so.
We’ve listed some of our personal favorites here. And the sleeper hit is clearly PhoneSaber, which I deftly demo here and here. With just 2,229 downloads, though, it doesn’t make the top ten list for free apps.
In early download voting, Facebook is beating MySpace hands down with nearly 3x as many downloads. One thing Facebook has that MySpace doesn’t - the chat feature is enabled, which is a really nice feature.

The Pandora app is phenomenal …. everybody with an iphone should check it out..

Is the App store the source of the data?
I wonder what you like so much about lightsaber!
Sam - its from the app store when accessed from the iPhone. For some reason Apple doesn’t say the number of downloads from iTunes.
Ramani - dude, it makes lightsaber sounds when you move the phone around. its sort of obvious.
Can someone with an iPhone tell us how our site works on the iPhone?
Totalbabes dot tv
It should adjust for an iPhone browser
its a pity its so hard to get the official development kit. i’d really like to see apple being a bit more co-operative in doling out their iphone sdk.
Is Google Mobile an actual app or does it automatically come with v2.0? I really can’t believe it’s not available in iTunes Store Germany! Maybe they’re waiting to roll it out here until they have a German version.
chuck - it doesn’t automatically come, no apps from the app store are pre-installed.
Flip, I’m working and traveling all day and won’t be back at a place I can install 2.0 until Saturday evening at earliest. I’m so excited to get my hands on all this but the timing is just awful for me
Who would have thought AIM would be so popular. Now I understand why AIM replaced Loopt on the App Store demo video.
Arrington- the second link to your seesmic demo gives a 500 error…
Facebook adds feature… now you can leave comments on news feeds
When is XM radio going to release an iphone app? I like the pandora app, but I would love an XM radio app.
Mine would be up there too if Apple had bothered to yet give the remaining 21,000 of us developers our certification. Soon, I hope.
From a dev’s perspective, its a bit irritating watching the app store open and still not have a dev key. After making a flashcard web app, I’ve been excited about building a native version, but have held off due to the lack of a dev key.
Now there’s several flashcard apps on the app store. On the plus side, while those are expensive (like $39.99 for Netter’s), mine is completely free:

@Joe
doesnt it make you sick to see all the trash apps on there? makes you think apple being selective about who they let in the program was total BS. cause alot (not all) of those devs are ehh… well… i will keep my mouth shut this time.
What about us iPod Touch users!!
Most of those free apps have mobile web counter parts… why would I want that app on my phone limiting the space I have Jonas Brothers songs and video?
5 out of the top 10 paid downloads are games from what I can tell, good indication for mobile games business. I love how Apple are pushing the envelope. BTW the Lightsaber is a lot of fun, had that running on my N95 for a while
(full disclosure I work for Nokia http://n-gage.com )
I wonder who is willing to pay for supermonkey ball. it doesn t worth it
Nath

Looks like apple is changing the mobile gaming scene
is nokia going to launch a dedicated mobile phone or roll out ngage to more phones ?
@nathhh
Actually, I’d say supermonkey ball is one of the few apps worth paying for. But a lot of these devs trying to charge for their apps are going to be sorely disappointed.
cant wait for android to come out and druid every iphone
@Michael - are you kidding me, buy an iphone for a freaking light saber sound? Grow the fuck up!
Does somebody know, what criteria you have to fulfil, that your iPhone app will pass the review? Would a youporn app be possible?
Early list of number of iPhone geeks who had to change their underwear today due to an exciting feeling in their nether-regions they have only heard about.
Palo Alto 15,345
San Francisco 19,342
Detroit D&D Club 719
WOW Conf/Philly 1,609
Basements at Mom’s House Everywhere 317,689
Waiting for a dev key as well. Frustrated.
Facebooks iPhone blog post
http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=22389032130
I’d say there are quite a variety of apps and prices.
It’s hard to tell what is ‘worth it’. Certainly Super Monkey Balls is a premium game that has had lots of press. So they can charge $9.99. A pong or Frisbee Golf game is going to have to be cheaper, and it seems like it is.
@24 Awww can’t afford a contract can you?
The next version of that light saber needs to beam a blue or red opaque shaped light and people can have light saber iphone duels!
where are the porn apps?
bang jenna
AIM logs you out after a short period of time without inactivity, totally lame
what about tariff to use these applications?
The only game I’ve purchased is Satori Sudoku. I’ll probably buy MotoRacer next though.
OT - but I see reports that people have lined up already at the apple stores. I simply do not understand the rationale. People have too much time in hand I guess. iphone3g is good but not revolutionary. Apple must be loving the hype.
Blackberry and Palm must be wondering what the heck is going on.
In browsing the AppStore (at least on iTunes 7.6.2) I notice that the apps are in many cases displayed alphabetically. So if there are 5 pages of apps in a category, the name of your app needs to start with a thru e to reach the first page.
Will this start a new app and domain name rush, similar to the yellow pages? Anyone registered AAAAtechcrunch.com yet?
@38 Chris: Those people don’t have time to spend wondering, they are too busy updating their resumes and sending them to Apple.
Hey what about Ipod touch?? Can somebody answer that?
What is the URL of these stats? I’d like to keep following them.
Aaaah… aaaaahh… Come-on where is an SSH client. Please someone write an SSH app.. OpenVPN would be nice too. I mean please… PLEASE… PLEASE!!!
Its got to be trivial. A jailbroken phone can run an entire freakin SSH server for crying out load
interesting, all the apps have set reset to zero downloads and are no longer counting.
Michael,
Can you find out (maybe through your insider influence :)) whether the count reset was acciental or intentional and will no longer be provided?
Yes, there’s no visibility on app popularity. If it was intentional, it will hurt paid apps because they will be left in the dark until the next financial report comes out after a month. Maybe you should write about this. Adsense shows better real-time stats.
I agree, the lack of popularity visibility will hurt developers, and in the end — us. During the next month, developers will still be trying to get more apps up, with very little idea about what applications the users actually want.
Additionally, the convoluted rating lists are hiding some of the more innovated games and apps from users. After some digging, I was really happy to see some genuinely new (to me) games for me to try, like Bridges, Color Rise, and Lights Off — unfortunately they are buried under several Solitaire, Sudoku, and Mahjongs.
Developers can just pipe a random cookie to there home website on boot up.
As for who wants what, well, that’s life. That kind of insight into revenue was rather unlikely going forward. No doubt some PM had his knuckles rapped for that one.
It’ll be replaced by a bar or something, showing a % rather than a straightforward #.
interesting that a lot of the apps on the apple store are also on http://www.iphoneapplicationlist.com where most of them are free. Yes, people, as a developers I think it’s time to stop letting apple monopoliz the whole thing. My apps are listed on the iphoneapplicationlist.com because the seem to support independent apps like mine, they didn’t bite me off like apple did…besides I’m starting to think of SteveJobbs as Bill Gates. Apps on a site like the iphoneapplicationlist.com are what “indie musicians” are in the music industry. Going against the flow….
