Some UAProfile News

Just thought I’d share this with the Mobile Web developers out there. It looks like Verizon Wireless has finally decided to allow access to the UAProfiles for the latest devices on their network.Historically the Big-V blocked anyone trying to access the UAProfile location that is sent in the headers of their devices (located at http://uaprof.vtext.com) making it hard to pull some basic specs for their devices. However I tried the link to the UAProfile of one of their latest devices, the LG VX8800, and it unexpectedly loaded up. The same seems to be true for a couple of other new LG devices recently released on VZW. It still looks like older UAProfiles are still blocked but I’m hoping this is a new policy and we’ll be able to get access to UAProfiles for new VZW devices from now on.
The other bit of UAProfile news is that Motorola have moved the location of their UAProfiles and now have a proper directory page listing the ones that are available (Like Nokia once did). All Motorola UAProfiles will now be found at http://uaprof.motorola.com/ though the old files hosted on Handango are still accessible. The directory page provides the Device Name, Commercial name (if different) and links to both the UAProfile and to the Device Specs on MotoDev where available.
A great move by Motorola to make device information more accessible (They’ve posted good info on MotoDev in the past too) and I hope more manufacturers start making it easier to get access to the UAProfiles for the benefit of the community. It just makes sense.
