A-GPS Finally Here To Speed Up Locks

A-GPS Finally Here To Speed Up Locks

The Nokia Beta Labs have finally given a bit more attention to the Internet Tablet product lines recently, adding an A-GPS application to the list of betas there. One of the major complaints against the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet is that the built-in GPS receiver takes entirely too long to get a lock on satellites. I’ve seen this personally and agree it’s horrendous.

The A-GPS application requires that you be connected to the net via Bluetooth to a cell phone, as the application uses the phone’s data connection to help process the satellite information quicker. Also, you must set a beginning ‘reference’ location, first.

Personally, I think GPS in an Internet Tablet is about 2 years too early, specifically if they’re going to include the useless Wayfinder mapping application, but that’s my opinion. Give it a run, and don’t forget to leave your feedback on the site. That feedback goes directly to the team responsible, so you know you’ll be heard.

I don’t think the statement “The A-GPS application requires that you be connected to the net via Bluetooth to a cell phone, as the application uses the phone’s data connection to help process the satellite information quicker” is 100% accurate.

If you use the ITs A-GPS app while connected via Wifi, you can still set a reference point that will be updated every time you get a GPS lock. As long as you fire up your n810’s GPS in a location relatively close to your saved reference point, your acquisition time should be much improved, with no cellular data plan required.

I’m not sure why you find the Wayfinder app useless. It uses the same map data as most routefinding GPS units so any problems there are the maps themselves.
I previously used Tom Tom on a Palm TX and Wayfinder is not much different in my book in that it does the routing job perfectly well.
The slow lock on is a nuisance but once on the unit holds the signal very well, better than the Palm BT unit in fact, especially when being used behind the athermic windscreen of my Peugeot.
