On the Lot Filmmaking Competition | Free Movie Vblog 3 Solomon Rothman
April 13, 2007
I entered the on the lot filmmaking competition. I didn’t win, but it looks like an interesting competition and there seem to be two different types of entries, people with filmmaking backgrounds that already have the resources to make professional movies and amateurs with absolutely no budget just creativity. It’ll be interesting to see how it all turns out.

I NEED YOUR HELP - On the Lot filmmaking competition
February 23, 2007
I’m in the “On the Lot” filmmaking competition. http://films.thelot.com/films/23702 Please check out my entry and vote for me if you like it.
For those of you who don’t know about “On The Lot” yet it’s a reality television show where filmmakers compete in an “American Idol” type competition where 16 filmmakers compete to produce short films each week. The winning filmmaker gets a 1 million dollar directing contract with DreamWorks pictures. It’s being presented by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg.
Quest for a Video Blog - What would you like to see?
January 19, 2007
This website has become very popular over the last 6 months (shortly after I released Boy Who Never Slept) I get a lot of traffic and responses from my blog posts on movies and filmmaking and of course from my filmmaking endeavors which include my first movie release of BWNS.
Infact “Boy Who Never Slept” has become a keyword of sorts with lots of daily searches for it’s proper name. With the increased popularity (thank you readers) I’ve started to receive a steady stream of correspondence from filmmakers, fans, students and random surfers sending me everything from encouragement to, to story ideas, to movie clips and filmmaking advice
It’s so cool and I’m very happy that it’s generated this response. I’m going to be launching a video blog as soon as I can and I need YOUR INPUT. Read more

THANKS to New Advertisers, I finally have a budget (of sorts) for another film
I’d like to thank everyone who has ever purchased a text ad on this site or PPC advertising (google adwords). Recently there has been an explosion of new advertisers, enough to produce another film with somewhat of a budget (still a no budget movie, but if this level of advertising continues I’ll have enough to pay for an HD camera, sound equipment, meals for the actors, etc)

Correspondence with Indie Filmmaker Aaron from Video VLOGBIZ
November 26, 2006
The following is an e-mail correspondance, I left the formating untouched:
Hi. My name is Aaron. I’m an indie film-maker like yourself. I’ve been pursuing this dream for awhile now.
While I have scripts shopping around in Hollywood, I wanted to make things happen for myself. Your own blog is pretty inspirational.
I’ve started a website for vloggers. They can customize their own vlog pages, share in the revenue generated by advertisers and accept or deny which ads are associated with their vlogs.
Its called www.MyVlogBiz.com
By creating this business model, I’m hoping to raise the revenue to finance my own feature film. Read more

Interviewed by Filmmaker Chris Miller from Things Going Smoothly
November 20, 2006
I was recently (November 04) interviewed by Chris an indie filmmaker currently working on a feature film bearing the same name of his blog (Things Going Smoothly).
He asked a lot of questions about the intricacies of creating Boy Who Never Slept and about what I’m working on now. You can read the entire interview here.
Concerning Chris’s film “Things Going Smoothly”
I’ll post some info in my blog about the movie when it’s released. For now, know that it’s the title of a no budget movie scheduled for shooting at the end of November about a guy trying to accelerate the oncoming apocalypse.
Sound Production for DV - Digital Video - Filmmaking Adventures
October 28, 2006
The next step for continuing on in my filmmaking adventures is to learn more about sound production, recording and editing. The number 1 complaint I’ve received concerning Boy Who Never Slept was the sound quality. I have A LOT more ambitious projects in the works and I’m working very hard to improve all aspects of my filmmaking skills and right now I’m especially paying attention to Sound.
Last week I bought the book “Producing great sound for digital video” second edition by Jay Rose. It’s a 400+ page book and so far I’m read to page 165. It goes over the basics of what sound is (changes in air pressure) how it spreads through air, water, and other materials and gives many practical details about microphones and recording options. When I have time I’ll provide some specifics of how I’m personally applying this info, but for now (I know I haven’t even finished the book yet) my plan for recording the sound on my next short is as follows.
Considering I don’t have enough money to buy a professional boom, shotgun, and lavaliere microphones, so here is my realistic plan for shooting better sound on my next production. Read more
BWNS shot with a $100 camera!! Filmmaking accessible to everyone
October 6, 2006
The camera I shot most of BWNS with was the JVC Digital Video Camera GR-DV3. Although I understand that the video quality for BWNS was not top notch, I purposely set out to make a movie on a budget anyone could afford. I was just checked ebay and found the camera I shot BWNS with in good condition on sale for $90.00 and that’s with no bids!!!! It’s going to be very exciting to see what people create, considering the digital revolution has made filmmaking accessible to everyone.
I sold that camerea after production in order to recoup some of the expenses. Later I was able to buy a sony dsr pd100a, a 3 ccd semi pro camera, but I had to sell it when I relocated to Los Angeles. I wasn’t even able to shoot anything substantial with it.
I’m currently saving up to try and get a semi-pro video camera. Even that level of equipment has become surprisling affordable. I should be able to buy a used semi-pro video camera for $1600 or less, depending on what model I want.
