Nim’s Island Movie Review Starring Jodie Foster and Gerard Butler
April 19, 2008
Nim’s Island is a family film packed with action and adventure starring the delectable Gerard Butler and the very talented Jodie Foster.
What surprised me initially with this movie is Jodie Fosters character, she plays an agoraphobic writer who cannot seem to leave her apartment, instead preferring to spend her time online or talking to one of her imaginary characters Alex Rover (Gerard Butler) I loved how she tackled this role and really made it her own, not afraid to just let go and be completely silly at times. It was very refreshing to see her in something far less serious than her usual roles and it worked very well.

Gerard Butler plays two roles in the movie. One is Alex Rover, the ‘imaginary friend’ or fictional character designed by Jodie Fosters character and successful writer Alexandra Rover, the other is father to the young girl Nim played by Abigail Breslin with whom he lives on a deserted island. When Nim’s father goes missing at sea she makes contact with Alexandra and begs her to leave the apartment and come to her rescue. This starts a hilarious journey in which we get to see some of Jodie Fosters rarely seen comedic talent and as the movie progresses it turns into a heartfelt and often moving family adventure for all ages.
As you may be able to tell, I completely loved this movie. It had a simple premise and although didn’t have that element of ‘magic’ that it appears to have when you watch the trailers it instead deals with much different issues which are just as entertaining.
Abigail Breslin is brilliant as the young girl Nim as she bravely fights to save her island from groups of tourists, stopping at nothing to convince them her island is a bad place to stay. I’m sure she will be a talent to look out for in years to come!
Definitely a great weekend family movie that is well worth an afternoon out!
