Many people that own computers only know of the enjoyment they get from playing games and surfing the web. They don't realize every time they surf the web, their computer is at risk for ad ware, spyware or viruses unless they have it adequately protected. Some people don't even know what spyware is. Spyware is software that is put on someone's computer without their knowledge to let them know what you do on the net, where you go and possible what your passwords are. The worst scenario is spyware that is put on with the intent of gathering your personal information such as financial data. For many years, there was no real type of spyware prevention. When spyware became a real problem, software companies began making spyware prevention software.
It is a good idea for anyone purchasing a computer for the first time to read up on computers or take a short course on home computers. First time buyers hear all the potential risks out there today, but don't fully understand what they are. Many people don't understand viruses or worms or ask, "What can I do to prevent spyware?" The best thing they can do is be aware of what it is, how they get it and how to prevent it. Then go out and get some good spyware. Many places will provide free software to prevent spyware. Often, when you purchase a new computer, the merchant will provide you with different ideas of free spyware prevention.
Some of the ways that we get spyware are some music cds, different shareware we download off the internet, and some program that presents itself as software to help our computer. You may see ads asking if your computer is running slow and if so, they have software to speed it up. Ads like this are the types that carry spyware with them. You think you are downloading one thing and really are downloading much more. You may also see the ads that tell you to click to receive your $25 gift certificate to this store or that store. Since everyone loves free things, you click on it, which takes you through a few more screens, most of them loaded with spyware, and adware. With the use of good spyware prevention software, it will be stopped or blocked from entering your computer. Even the free spyware prevention software will block the spyware from entering your system.
Some internet security software or anti virus programs will actually alert you every time they've blocked some sort of spyware or adware or other attempted intrusion on your computer. You would be amazed how many attempts there are like that. What would amaze you more is how many of these attempts are successful without effective spyware prevention software.
