*DF

Bob Sutor: “The ODF Alliance has posted their newsletter for this month and it is now available in PDF Form.

I don’t really have much to say about this other than to note the irony that a document published by the ODF Alliance is published using PDF. As is the “Alliance Response to Ecma’s Proposed Disposition of Comments on OOXML.” That’s actually very funny.

Preparing for Blue

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

I test for my Blue belt on Feb 12th. I have all my material down, I just need to work on the height and consistency of my kicks, and the fluidity of motion between techniques. My long form contains a sequence of kicks that starts with a half-moon kick (left leg), followed by a spinning heel kick (right leg), followed by a jumping chop kick (right leg), pivot, block, an outside kick (left leg), a spin kick (left leg) and a back kick. Each kick needs to flow smoothly into the next, however, I tend to pause before each spin kick in order to center my balance for the spin. Unfortunately, I’m not supposed to pause. Over the next week and a half I will be working specifically on that sequence. Then, once I test for my Blue belt, I move on to jumping spin kicks, instep kicks, and many more fun techniques, including my long staff weapons form.

This week I…

Worked with Dan Diephouse to do a top-to-bottom refactoring of the Abdera server framework Implemented an OAuth provider for use with an internal project Worked on some other bits for that same project that I can’t really talk about yet. Wrote a new article for developerWorks (not yet published) Helped merge some features from our internal blogging environment into the upcoming lotus connections 2.0 blogs codebase* Assisted my Tae Soo Do instructor in the childs orange/yellow/green belt classes Sparred with my first-degree black sash instructor and got my backside thoroughly kicked.

I’m tired.

* …many of the new features that will ship in Connections 2 have already been deployed and thoroughly tested within our own internal environment.

Abdera Server Refactoring

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Dan Diephouse and I have been spending the last week refactoring the Abdera server framework with the goal of making is less complicated, easier, and generally better. While there is still a bit more to do, the majority of the work is complete. Because the changes are not backwards compatible, however, I’m going to hold off a few days before merging the code into the trunk so people can have some time to review and prepare for the changes. To make it easier for folks to review the changes, I have put together a “20-minute server implementation guide” (pdf format) that gives a high level overview of the new design and the development process.

Also note: the refactored code includes some code provided by the google feed-server project. Google feed-server builds on Abdera and the team intends to contribute additional functionality of Abdera. Many thanks to that team for their contributions and feedback.
