Odd bits

Browsers suck: After spending the vast majority of the past few years working mostly on web application backend and REST API stuff intended for use primarily by non-Browser clients, I have recently been thrust back into basic Web APP UI implementation (I’m implementing a new UI for IBM’s intranet blogging system based on Lotus Connections). After spending the last week working on some of the more dynamic elements of the design I’ve been reminded of the one thing that seems to have remained constant over the past decade: Web browsers really suck. Moo Kub: Today was my seven year olds first day of Tae Soo Do training. Given that I have been ordered by our family doctor to get off my butt and exercise I’m thinking about taking a class at the dojang myself. Give me some credits: About a year after graduating from high school I discovered that I could make more money actually working in the technology industry than I could sitting in a classroom learning about the technology industry. So I dropped out of college and started working full time as a system administrator and programmer for an Native-American Casino here in California. And although I’ve since found myself working at IBM and doing some pretty damn cool stuff, the fact that I had never actually finished college has always been hanging over my head. So, about two years ago I started attending an online program to finish up my bachelors degree in computer science. Today I scheduled my final two courses. I complete the program on April 9th. I figure I’ll wait a couple of years then get started on a Master’s program. Land grab: I’ve got approximately 1.5 acres of land for sale up on Whidbey Island in Washington. Water sewer and electricity are already run to the lots which have a view of and access to Dugualla Bay (near the intersection of Jones Road and Dike Road). The lots need a bit of cleanup but are otherwise buildable. Ping me if you’re interested in knowing more. My email address is generally easy to find if you know where to look. Who needs Vista?: I’m running the latest SVN image of Beryl on Ubuntu. Eye-candy? Yeah, I’ve got eye-candy. Abdera 0.2.2: The Apache Abdera team is preparing to release version 0.2.2. The main changes are some critical bug fixes and API cleanups. Expect an official announcement next week. In the meantime you can grab the 0.2.2 branch from SVN.

Beryl and Ubuntu

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

For the past few days I’ve been running Beryl on Ubuntu. The UI effects are amazing and it runs well on my Thinkpad T41p. There have been a few minor issues with the screensaver but nothing major; and I can’t get it to work with Google Earth but that’s ok. I can drop back down to the Ubuntu default when I want to do some planet surfing :-)
