Problems Resizing in Illustrator

“I'm having a few difficulties with Adobe Illustrator. I want to import a bitmap image and decrease its size, while minimizing the amount of detail that gets lost in the process. When I make the image smaller, it all goes to mush. Anyone know of a workaround for this problem?”
