Former Times-Picayune reporter says Washington bureaus are more than "luxuries"

Michael has previously reported on the fading state of the local-paper Washington bureau. Bill Walsh, a former New Orleans Times-Picayune D.C. correspondent, spoke more about it in a Monday speech after he received the National Press Club's Robin Goldstein Award for Washington Regional Reporting:

I feel a bit odd accepting this award for being a Washington correspondent because I no longer am one. In fact, I'm no longer in journalism. After 22 years, I left in May to take a job as a healthcare strategist at a large non-profit in Washington, D.C. Given the state of the newspaper industry, I suspect that had I not left voluntarily I wouldn't have had a choice eventually. The slot I left hasn't been filled.

The number of bloggers commenting on the news out of Washington has exploded. The number of reporters actually digging up the news has dwindled. Washington bureaus are hemorrhaging reporters or closing altogether. In tight times, papers see their Washington operations as luxuries. That's misguided.

The result is that members of Congress, except for the leaders, are getting less scrutiny than ever. Even before I left, I was so busy covering the daily stories that I had little time to do what I was sent here to do: Dig into what local members of Congress were up to, find out who was influencing them and figure out if they were truly representing the folks back home.

I have no sympathy for reporters losing their jobs. The had a responsibility to objective and report the facts and they have been in the tank for Liberal/Democrats for decades.

Good point, Tator! Every single journalist reports liberal-biased drivel. It's so disgusting! Every last one of them... Oh wait.

While I am not referring specificly to Mr. Walsh, it is clear that part of he reason that the number of Wasington bureaus are dwindling is because of pure laziness. Those that come to Washington for what they believe are a few good years of cocktail parties can not compete from hungry bloggers.

Before you comment on the lack of sympathy for reporters, don't lump the spoon-fed Washington folks for journalists at small- and medium-sized cities and towns who work nights and weekends at understaffed newspapers and make wages comparable to an assistant manager at a fast-food or retail chain store.

WE NOW KNOW FOR A FACT NOW THAT ALL THREE NETWORKS ARE IN THE TANK FOR OBAMA. WHY WOULD THEY SEND THEIR TOP ANCHORS ON THIS TRIP ABROAD. THIS ELECTION COVERAGE IS SO BIAS IT'S A DISGRACE. OBAMA ALREADY GETS TWICE AS MUCH COVERAGE AS MCCAIN. OUTRAGEOUS!!
