WONDER WHAT REP WASSERMAN SCHULTZ THINKS ABOUT THIS?
It's interesting that the Democrats are howling about this. Me think thou dost protest too much. Why did Obama immediately assume that he is the "appeaser"? Maybe it's because he has already stated he would. It's stated plainly on his own website!!
Making the election seem to be between Bush and Obama will probably help Obama. Bush's low approval rating and all considered. John McCain will have a harder time with his election strategy of separation from Bush if Bush keeps attacking Obama himself.
Yesterday, Obama secured the support of 4 superdelegates (Reps. Henry Wexler, Jim McDermott and Howard Berman and Larry Cohen (CWA DNC)), 1 pledged delegate in North Carolina (because of updated vote tallies in the state) and 7 pledged delegates that had previously supported John Edwards. That means that the number for Obama to secure a majority of pledged delegates has gone down from 25 to 17. And the number Obama needs to secure the nomination is 121.5.
Blunder. It was not only in bad form, it was historically inaccurate. Bush is the gift that keeps on giving. And coupled with the video of McSame endorsing the idea of talking with Hamas two years ago, this is just political GOLD. Or should I say OIL?

I think Bush's remarks were extremely distasteful. Was it a smart attack? I'm going to say no, it just gives the American public an opportunity to watch Obama respond with grace.
MC CAIN LIES!!!! WANTED TO TALK TO HAMAS!!!
Two years ago, in an interview with James Rubin for Sky News, Sen. John McCain expressed a willingness to negotiate with the terrorist group Hamas -- the very group that McCain has been relentlessly using to smear Sen. Barack Obama over the last several weeks.
Rubin has written an op-ed in Friday's Washington Post about his exchange with McCain, and The Huffington Post has obtained exclusive video.
RUBIN: "Do you think that American diplomats should be operating the way they have in the past, working with the Palestinian government if Hamas is now in charge?"
McCAIN: "They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another, and I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy towards Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice, so . . . but it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that."
You can watch the video of the exchange over at HuffPo. Suffice it to say that this one stings for the McCain campaign, both because of the nature of the major flub and because it's not the first time that the candidate's words have come back to bite him. In fact, it has become quite common with McCain to act like he is holier than now, whether on Iraq or campaign finance or some other issue, only to be outed not only as fallible, like any other human (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but also as cynical, hypocritical, conniving, and overly ambitious -- in other words as just the kind of power-hungry career politician willing to say anything in the hopes of winning an election that Americans hate (which is not such a good thing).
On the issue of Hamas, in particular, because this exchange between Rubin and McCain was caught on tape and it isn't ancient history (just three years ago), this line of attack is now off the table for McCain and the hard right. They simply have no credibility on the issue. What's more, by harping on Hamas from here on out, those on the right would only serve to remind Americans a) that McCain will flip-flop his positions for political convenience, and b) that McCain was recently in favor of reaching out to Hamas. To this end, it's hard for me to think of anything else that could have emerged on this topic that could have been more detrimental to McCain.

This is mentioned in history - the value of making friends of enemies: ?The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were.? JFK - "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.? Theodore Roosevelt ?Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?? Abraham Lincoln ?You have to have a positive strategy to make more partners and fewer terrorists. Harry Truman and George Marshall took a little bit of our money to build a world that had more friends and better enemies. Foreign assistance is national security -- not charity. The Marshall Plan saw it that way and we have to do the same today.? Bill Clinton
Yet another gift Bush has given to Obama. Because of Bush's arrogance and incompetence Obama will be the next president.

I thought McSame was trying to distance himself from Bush. Looks like a tight team to me. Also, appeasment, as McCain claims Obama wants to do, really means giving something away to the enemy in negotiations. Quite a bit different than holding talks. If McCain is such a brilliant guy on foriegn policy, he should have a better handle on the termonoly.
Any chance to inject Bush into the campaign is a welcome one.
Huge blunder for the GOP. Now Obama can attack Bush, which further identifies Bush to McCain. It will also be easy to dispute their claims, considering that the hero of the right, Reagan, talked to both Iran and the USSR. In fact, he bribed the Iranians (our enemies) with weapons...
Bush was clearly talking about dems -- Obama as he has doen in the past. However, dems saw a chance to jump in and tie Bush putting his foot in his mouth to McCain. That's a unified winner for dems.

The Bush remark was great because it united the Democratic Party in their defense of Senator Obama, and it got McCain to agree with Bush as well, which further ties Bush around McCain's beck as an anchor. Right now, McCain needs to distance himself from Bush otherwise the election will be a referendum on him and George Bush. That's not what he needs, so his continuing to support Bush is rather puzzling.

Uh Keith? Obama had to assume nothing. The Bush administration when asked in Israel by John Yang of NBC and a CNN reporter, they flat out said "YES" that the comments were directed toward Senator Obama. As and "afterthought" they then said "and others such as President Carter".
Obama and his surrogates need to keep this alive for as long as possible. Anything they can do to keep George Bush involved in this election is a great thing for them.
McCain has been trying to spend the last month convincing people he's not offering a third Bush term. Now the same Bush is acting as his wingman on this issue, while footage surfaces of McCain recognizing Hamas as a legitimate government we need to deal with without antipathy. I'd say that's a pretty drastic detour for his campaign.
Now I think we're going to see the real Barack Obama. He may have been wearing kid-gloves in his fight against his fellow Democrat, Hillary. The republicans had a strange idea that they were going to walk all over Obama. It's a whole different ballgame now.
I think Obama can seize the moment and take out two birds with one big stone.
First, you can way-lay on Bush for some an absurd comment. Then he can go after McCain with a variety of different angles, the first of which can be to point out the hypocrisy of both Bush AND McCain by throwing up past statements made by both.
No, the only argument here is whether or not Bush is secretly trying to help Obama.

perception50 - you need the do some research in terms of what mccain called his own wife...
That depends, do you think McCain wants a lot of talk about McCain-Bush attacks on Obama, and Obama's response to McCain-Bush? Answer that, and you'll answer your own question.
By the way, if you needed any more evidence that the primary is totally done, the fact that it was Jamie Rubin who stuck a knife in McCain this morning in the WaPo in defense of Obama should remove all doubt.
Yesterday we saw the Bush - McCain ties fully exposed in a coordinated attack on Obama, and it's Obama who in the end will benefit from it. So yes, both Bush and McCain blundered again.
For those that think this is a false attack created by Obama..did you not hear McCain's statement backing up what he said? Give me a break...Obama needs stregthening on his foreign policy and we would like to thank Mr. Bush and Mr. McCain for this oppurtunity.
MCain jumped on it with his theme: Obama is not fit to be POTUS - which is a bold face lie. Now we are in the General. make no mistake - it has begun. Hillary who?
This was a monsterous mis-step by Bush/McCain (if McCain had anything to do with it). It refocuses the attention on the platform that Obama has wished to run on since his campaign began. He has no reservation in going toe to toe with the Republicans on this issue. Bush's infamous lack of intelligence is now on full display by not knowing the difference of appeasment and capitulation. To the bully's of our society, this will play into their hands, i.e. the rejection of all negotiation at the price of military conflict...or rather hawkish on war. By definition, Obama's stance (negotiation) is the opposite of appeasement.
McCain spent the entire morning in that 2013 speech trying to distance himself from Bush. He then jumped right into Bush's lap with the Knesset comments, thereby completely obliterating their morning speech. He completely stepped on his own message. Bad bad day for McCain.
This one is one of those "toss-a-coin" and decide situations. For some, it will still cause anger; for others it will just look like another issue to stir up a firestorm and move to the next issue. I thought Bush was aiming at President Carter--and no one can control him.
Old McSame Magoo is even more desperate now, seeing the GOPs sinking in their ships as they fail to win Congressional seats from one State to another. He's now being smoked out for having his PAC Lobbying friends, with ties to the Burmese Militant Junta and other abusive foreign governments, aiding him in his campaigning. This old guy is now gropping every lame straw he can grab, like accusing Sen. Obama of wanting to talk to Hamas, when two years ago, he declared that he would do exactly the same. Oh, yes, he was caught on video with his exact words. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/15/exclusive-video-mccain-wa_n_102031.html Maybe, he and his supporters might want to check out that video. Yeah, McSame might want to be reminded that Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, actually DID appease Hitler and promoted Hitler. The Holocaust would not have happened if not for Prescott Bush pandering to and financing Hitler! Has Bush ever apologize to the surviving family members of those Hewish people who were murdered in the Holocaust?
If you listen to the video, not only does McCain say we need to talk with Hamas he says "Hamas is the new reality". "People want peace and then they want democracy and Fattah was not giving them that". That sounds to me like an endorsement of Hamas as the democratically elected government of the Palestinian people.
Keith, the comment you made at 9:10 shows your ignorance. Do you know what appeasement is doofus? Ask your english or history teacher when you get to school. Run along now little Timmy...I mean Keithy.
Let it be known, Obama is no Kerry. Obama will come back at you twice as strong.

boy oh boy. get ready to tumble. but here's what's rich. john mccain used to support talking to hamas before he was against it. here's the vid, via the huff.
Ben, Barry O wasn't mentioned. There are a whole list of liberal dems to whom his statement applied, starting with Jimmy Carter. I also think Bush's state department is loaded with appeasers. The fact that Obama and the Dems all jumped ugly is telling. Methinks they doth protest too much.

It doesn't matter what Bush does or doesn't say. Folk despise him and are willing to put in a smooth talking, non-experienced JFK wannabe into office whose liberal stances will make Jimmy Carter look like Pat Buchanan. Over rated and folks are being mesmerized by his song and dance. If the economy were stronger, this would look like Kerry/Gore/Edwards all over again. People ****ed with the person in the oval office and searching for excuses to punish him. As far as the incredulous remarks about his performance, he has faltered badly, but I believe he stands for something. Obama invites Donnie McClurkin, a gospel singing icon and then gay folks get mad and Obama ads a "gay minister" (there's an oxy moron) and Donnie only does one event. Obama's pastor makes comments and first he protects him then when the media darlings turn on him, he cuts bait like a good Clinton. Besides, Bush is correct. Like when Carter kept appeasing Iran and Iraq and Syria and Jordan and Egypt to force Israel into an uneasy peace, then Reagan inherited the whole mess of it. The same countries who liberals keep pandering Israel to give an olive branch had sectarian, Islamic warfare amongst themselves for centuries before and after the crusades. Even if they got their pipe-dream wish and knocked Israel out, they'd start bombing each other in a year. All that said the 1967 war returned to Israel what they had take away. The Palestinians (a play on Hebrew Phillistine) is collection of Syrian, Jordan, and other Arabs who parked on occupied land hundreds of years ago and never left. I am enjoying this race as a non party supporter because the Dumbos er...Demos, just like I blogged earlier on my page, keep being the gift that doesn't keep giving while the Repubs are trying to find right center landing...The Clintons showed their real "colors" this year or lack of color-conscience. Only a handful really questioned it. But Obama's pastor makes comments (which if you were in his generation and seeing the stuff he saw in the black community even to this day, you'd understand him all the more) and we see the imbalance. Maybe you're happy because there won't be another Bush in the whitehouse. I'd be happier if there wasn't another Clinton either.

Clearly, DaveR, it's obvious that Hamas - a terrorist organization - would reveal their true intentions when endorsing an American president. After all, they know that their endorsement is valuable in American domestic politics, and as such will definitely help that person get elected, right? Clearly Hamas has to be stunned that their "endorsement" is being used against Barack Obama!
Not smart at all by Bush, but that's what's to be expected. When 70% of the people disapprove of your job performance, mostly because of the war we're currently in, any attack by him defending his own position while pointing out the contrast between he and Obama actually helps Obama. It gives him the perfect platform to expand on his ideas, which are to sit down with these people and tell them what's what. He's said all along he would use military force if need be. What we all need to worry about is China and Russia's reaction, because neither will condone an attack on their interests even if Ahmadinejad was carrying a nuclear missile around on his back. If we launch another attack without UN approval, bing! World War III. Now, doesn't McCain sound just like the type of guy to say, "screw you Russia and China, we're going in?" I think he is and I think he will do it, but this time, the world will react.

I think it was a stupid move for 5 reasons. 1) It ties Bush to McCain. 2) Bush is really not in a place to be criticizing anyone on foreign policy. 3) There are plenty of incosistency you can point to for Bush and McCain (i.e. The Bush Admin is talking to Iran inn the lower levels, Rice has said they'll talk to Iran anytime, anywhere, anyhow with a pre-condition, and McCain has indicated cooperation with Hamas before) 4. It is stupid for a president of the United States to engage in partisan political games overseas, let alone invoke Hitler's name while in Israel for a domestic political game. 5. What's so wrong about talking with people? Without it both parties become more extreme, and I think most Americans understand this.

Comparing any American let alone a Democrat to Hitler is a slap to all Americans regarding a tragic period our history. Bush advisors privately stated that Bush was referring to Obama when making those statement. Additionally, it is inappropriate to bring partisan politics and our election into foreign countries. That was also a slap to us and it proves that Bush has NO RESPECT for the position he holds and the image of this country. Obama has never said that he would negotiate with terrorist or terrorist groups. He said he would engage directly with leaders of Iran and North Korea in attempt to reach agreements through diplomacy. The Senator that Bush referred to during his speech was a conservative REPUBLICAN who gave half of Checkoslovakia to Hilter who eventually invaded and took over the half starting WWII. Comparing any American to Hitler is OUTRAGEOUS, OFFENSIVE AND DISGUSTING. Bush does not deserver to be in office.

Obama leaves a voicemail for a Detroit TV reporter he called "sweetie":
Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I'm calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn't get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren't the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it.
Second apology is for using the word 'sweetie.' That's a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next.
Its almost as if Bush is campaigning for Barack Obama. Everytime Bush opens his mouth it proves the case that we need to replace him with a Democrat. Keep talking GW!!!!
This is stupid on Bush's behalf - he has (as you say) poisoned the message for at least a few months. McCain won't be able to mention the "talking to dictators" line without bringing up nasty recoil, now. I think it's easy to say that Obama clearly won the first news cycle against McCain.

Time will tell if Bush's and McCain's comments (let's not forget that McCain agreed with Bush) were good political tactics. This is a great attempt for Bush to get some of his base back by going after both Obama and Jimmy Carter. It is about his own legacy. He thinks he'll be shown correct in 20-30 years if Iraq is a peaceful democracy. This is actually good politics for Bush, as it might move his approval with some groups (hawkish GOPers, military, Jewish voters) making his overall approval a less dismal 35-40% instead of 28%. Also, if Bush's approval can go up a little. it helps McCain in the long run. But it helps Obama too right now.

From his Web site, which you should take the time to read. It will impress you with it's directness and heft: The Problem: The United States is trapped by the Bush-Cheney approach to diplomacy that refuses to talk to leaders we don't like. Not talking doesn't make us look tough ? it makes us look arrogant, it denies us opportunities to make progress, and it makes it harder for America to rally international support for our leadership. On challenges ranging from terrorism to disease, nuclear weapons to climate change, we cannot make progress unless we can draw on strong international support. Talk to our Foes and Friends: Obama is willing to meet with the leaders of all nations, friend and foe. He will do the careful preparationnecessary, but will signal that America is ready to come to the table, and that he is willing to lead. And if America is willing to come to the table, the world will be more willing to rally behind American leadership to deal with challenges like terrorism, and Iran and North Korea's nuclear programs. And to Still Waiting...sorry it took Obama about 90 minutes to respond. I doubt Obama was watching Bush's speech live just waiting to pounce. And no, Still Waiting, the foreign soil issue is REAL. There's an unwritten rule that presidents don't campaign on foreign soil. You don't go to another country on official business and rip the opposing party's nominee. You just don't. It's classless and shows a lot of disrespect to the country your visiting.
What about ending the Cold War by talking to the USSR?
