McCain ousts adviser, releases conflict policy

My story, just posted on Politico:

John McCain's campaign asked a prominent Republican consultant, Craig Shirley, to leave his official campaign role Thursday after a Politico inquiry about Shirley's dual role consulting for the campaign and for an independent "527" group opposing the Democratic presidential candidates. The campaign also released a new conflict of interest policy barring such arrangements.

Shirley, a conservative public relations veteran, doubled as a consultant to McCain and to the group Stop Her Now, a 527 group barred from coordinating its activities with presidential campaigns. He is not currently on the McCain campaign’s payroll, but would also step down from his role on McCain’s Virginia Leadership Team, a McCain spokesman, Brian Rogers, said.

"If you're working for a 527 involved in the presidential race, you won't have a named role in our campaign,” said Rogers.

Under the new policy, a copy of which was provided to Politico, “no person with a McCain Campaign title or position may participate in a 527 or other independent entity that makes public communications that support or oppose any presidential candidate.”

Shirley’s firm, Shirley & Bannister Associates, was paid more than $22,000 by McCain for work this February and March to win conservative support. Stop Her Now has paid the firm more than $155,000 since 2007 for public relations work.

The details of the policy, which requires McCain's staff to undergo a new round of vetting, are also worth a look. Details after the jump.

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis moved to avoid a recurrence of the situation with his conflict of interest policy, released late yesterday. It also sought to stem the impression that McCain’s campaign is run by lobbyists – a characterization Democrats have tried to make since it was reported that a senior adviser, Charlie Black, made lobbying calls from McCain’s signature bus, the Straight Talk Express. Davis himself is currently on leave from his lobbying and consulting firm, and the campaign removed two other officials this week for work they’d done on behalf of Burmese junta.

Davis’s directive has five points:

-That McCain aides may not be registered lobbyists or foreign agents, or make money from those practices.

-That volunteers must disclose their status as lobbyists or foreign agents, and may not participate in making policy on the areas they lobby, or lobby McCain or his staff.

-That “no person with a McCain Campaign title or position may participate in a 527 or other independent entity that makes public communications that support or oppose any presidential candidate.”

-No McCain campaign vendor may work with a 527 or independent group without a pre-approved legal “firewall.”

-As McCain has said before, “anyone serving in a McCain Administration must commit not to lobby the Administration during his presidency.”

The memo establishes a new vetting process, requiring campaign aides to fill out a questionnaire on their status, and to turn in proof that they’ve terminated outside contracts over to the campaign legal department.

They can say all they want about how everybody will come together no matter what. Well, listen up idiots. At least one of us is not going to vote for that lying slimeball. What in the world is the point of voting for a postive change if Obama allows her to have any role in the campaign after he whips her butt.

Here are a dozen, guaranteed, money-back reasons why John McCain won"t be the next president. (I can only offer a limited-time, money-back guarantee, since unfortunately I can"t control world events.) 1. The McBush factor. McCain"s support of the Iraq War will make it impossible for him to break from Bush, the most unpopular president in living memory. The photo of McCain hugging and being kissed by Bush will become increasingly embedded in the collective consciousness of the American people as the months roll on. The rest is too long for a comment. Please see, "A Dozen Reasons Why McCain Won"t Win: Money-Back Guarantee" http://msa4.wordpress.com/

One of McCain's staff members is a former cabinet-level official with the Mexican government. I guess "conflict of interest" is only what the corrupt MSM says it is. If anyone else is upset about a McCain staff member - someone doing outreach for his campaign - being a former cabinet-level official with the Mexican government who worked directly with Vicente Fox, please go to his appearances and ask him why he still has a staff member who's a former cabinet-level official with the Mexican government. (Repeated in the hope that Ben Smith will finally do his job and ask McCain why one of his staff members is a former cabinet-level official with the Mexican government).

Actually, what McCain did is more that what Clinton did.

He walks the walk, not just talks the talk.

It appears that Democrats are a bit touchy on how they feel about they’re national security positions.

Bush didn’t use any names, didn’t say it was anyone from this nation, but the democrats jumped on him en masse.

Did it occur to anyone that the whining, squeaking democrats who were saying politics should stop at the shores? blah blah, more pertains to them?

And gosh, did anyone tell Al Gore that when Feb 13, 2006, when he criticized the US on foreign soil. Hmmm?

Anyone point that out to Jimmy Carter? Hmmmmm?

How about Murtha criticizing a president while the president is on foreign soil, on Veterans Day. Hmmmmm?

The democrats can’t help themselves. When they cannot shut up about someone who is still the president, making speeches, cannot help themselves from criticizing him, even when he is speaking to an ally?

Seriously. Look at the democrats. They’re so beside themselves, they can’t help but knee jerk scream at something this president says.

Is this a party that is mature enough to run a country? When they act like little kids in a play ground shrieking about something that wasn’t even said?

It is out there that BO said he would meet with leaders of nations that aren’t friendly to Israel.

Bush didn’t use BO’s name.

But given the democrats’ knee jerk reaction about it says they know that BO’s policy of meeting with regimes that are the antithesis of peace is wrong.

And apparently, even though BO himself said it, the democrats don’t want that pointed out to anyone.

The best part is, if the democrats hadn’t said anything, it would have hardly been noticed.

No one would have really paid attention to it. But the democrats did more for that fact than any amount of national paid advertising by the republicans! Ha!

For those of you out there who didn’t read the full text of the comment, here is a larger snippet than the democrats have been shrieking about.

“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ?Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.? We have an obligation to call this what it is ? the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history. ” As pointed out by John Podhoretz, in his article called The Obama Campaign Goes Completely Insane The link is on Real Clear politics.com about Obama’s thin skinned ness.

It is exactly the sort of thing a man with Bush?s politics would say in a speech before the Knesset, whether Obama had run for president or not.

He’s right. The narcissism of the Obama campaign to assume that the whole world is somehow all about him, even on the national stage is a bit breath taking, don’t you think?

Afterall, there is a big world out there going on that is separate and aside from the Dem nomination, and separate from his White house bid.

It isn’t all him all the time.

Pretty interesting though.

Ha, Fred Thompson was just on Fox this morning.

He said the democrats made much ado about nothing.

And then he said, if the shoe fits, that doesn’t mean you have to put it on.

As I said, the democrats did more to point out to the nation about the weakness of one of their candidates than the republicans could have done.

Yesterday, Obama secured the support of 4 superdelegates (Reps. Henry Wexler, Jim McDermott and Howard Berman and Larry Cohen (CWA DNC)), 1 pledged delegate in North Carolina (because of updated vote tallies in the state) and 7 pledged delegates that had previously supported John Edwards. That means that the number for Obama to secure a majority of pledged delegates has gone down from 25 to 17. And the number Obama needs to secure the nomination is 121.5.
