ABSTINENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM PDF Print E-mail
Trinity Church was selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide a Community Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) Program.   This program will be presented in both Miami Dade County and Broward Counties.  While assessing the status of teen pregnancy and births in Miami , most available data in 2005 from the Florida Department of Health, speaks to the percentage of teen births, as a percentage of the total births in the state. When presented in that light, Miami's 12.5% of total births to teens is not much worse than the state average of 11.5%.  However, Miami Dade County had more out of wed-lock pregnancies under the age of 18 than any other county in the state with over 2800 births.   Over 38% of the children live in high-poverty neighborhoods. Additionally, 11% of youth between the ages of 16-19 are high school drop outs and are not working. Teen Birth Rate Ages 15-19 continue to be over 30% (per 1000). There is a compelling need for increased services and funding for the target areas of this proposal.

The program goals are to: (1) reduce the number of adolescents engaging in premarital sexual activity; (2) reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies among adolescents; and (3) reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents, thereby improving the futures of youth in the target communities.   These goals will be accomplished by Trinity Church and their partner, OIC of Broward County, utilizing the Families United to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (FUPTP) curriculum.

The Families United to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (FUPTP) is an abstinence-until-marriage education curriculum that provides youth with healthy messages about their bodies, their behaviors, and their interactions.   The model supports young people in voluntarily making the healthy decision to postpone sexual activity until marriage.  Facilitated by an Abstinence Educator, the curriculum consists of interactive games, activities and exercises that make learning about adolescent development, abstinence and healthy relationships, and marriage interesting and fun.   The FUPTP program meets multi-cultural and age-related needs of youth and aims to prevent youth's involvement in risky behavior associated with premarital sex, drugs and alcohol, and violence. It also provides medically accurate information about the prevention of out-of-wedlock pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
