ReMix: Seiken Densetsu 3 'Electrion (Guitar Mix)'

They came, they saw, and they informed me that my air conditioning unit's compressor, by far the most expensive component, was beyond salvation. Fun. At least I've gained a new appreciation and respect for those who live without AC, whether by choice or by circumstance. TO collabed with guitarist FIDGAF on this Seiken 3 ReMix that intros with rather spooky staccato guitar strums and an nice, dark ambience, then gets funky with some swing-time hip-hop beats, complete w/scratchin', fuzz guitar, and cool fading vibrato drones. Melody enters soon after on a cool-as-a-cucumber mellow electric piano, leading up to a nice chorus/refrain where it duets with stereo-doubled lead guitar. The mood is here is downright frigid; my constant usage of temperature metaphors probably has something to do with my shirt being glued to my back and it being ungodly hot, but this is still some slick work. The guitar adds a lot, as this is more a BGM-style composition, establishing a funky groove and going places with it, to be sure, but not with narrative melodic development as a primary focus. The funky little reverb-drenched pianosynth is subtle but well played; while it's not too loud, it still steals a lot of the attention and has a good deal of variety. Larry wrote quite a bit on this one - here's an excerpt:

"The rearrangement is pretty liberal, as this involves taking only the first 15 seconds of Swivel's melody (which, to be fair, is at a really fast tempo) and refashioning it into a somewhat different kind of theme, and I have to say that hearing sections such as the belltones at the 2-minute mark showed some of the most logical rearrangement ideas I've ever heard. TO's original compositional ideas seamlessly connected with the arranged game music... I felt adding FIDGAF to the picture created a lot more energy with this mix, while not overshadowing the subtle hip-hop beats and ambient sounds that made "Electrion" interesting in the first place. It's a very successful hybrid of styles. Solid work, bros. "

I concur: creative, interpretive, not overly showy or elaborate, and while there's a degree of reiteration (I think a percussive breakdown could have been the business, personally), work is done on soloing and subtle changes to keep it movin'; for those of us without air conditioners, a blast of sub-zero chillness that's well-appreciated.
