ReMix: Super Metroid 'Braving The Flames'
If on a whim you took a young man and threw him up against a wall and instead of falling, he just stuck there, you might very well have offended or even harmed Adhesive_Boy, who gives us this challenging, somewhat experimental, tempo-oscillating Super Metroid ReMix, part of the Relics of the Chozo project, which is well worth checking out if you haven't yet. With heavily effected, wildly panned percussion, fading arpeggios, primal choral shouts, trip-hoppy distorted and stretched beats, and both semi-normal and heavily mangled brass, this mix is all about trading things up every other six seconds with some new effect or sonic device, lending an organic, pulsating feel, also achieved through the greatly varying tempo; I think this ReMix does more gradual tempo fluctuations than anything else on the site. In and of itself, that really wouldn't be an admirable claim to fame, but the way Adhesive_Boy makes it work within the arrangement is what's so keen. At points sounding like a 50's sci-fi flick, at others a floating, drifting ambient piece, and still others an industrial soundscape of warring rhythms laced with orchestral third parties, this ain't the easiest mix to describe in words other than to emphasize the extreme vicissitudes of tempo and sound. Not really driving music, unless you're stopping at red lights at the perfect intervals, but a very engrossing full-concentration listen, if for no other reason than to hear how the adhesive one has melded lots of sounds into one big burping stew - burping, but musical, which is always the key. Good, VERY original, different stuff - check it out.
