Cheap Hotel Prices

Tag: Sports & Stuff, Web SitesDustin @ 6:22 am

A couple years ago we drove to Denver to watch the Braves play the Rockies. I found our hotel that we would stay in after the game through Hotels.com. Then my wife said there was no way she was going to drive and and only stay one night. She wanted a travel day!

So I had to find another hotel. Rather than just getting another room, I went to Priceline.com
[image] I bid really low just to see what would happen. I ended up getting a room that would normally cost $109 per night for only $30! It was a Marriott too. I have to say that that night was a much nicer stay that the second night where we paid $59 for a dive! Seriously, the second place was just scary.

I think the reason we got such a good deal was because once we got to Denver we realize it was kind of hard to get to our hotel. They were doing construction on the off-ramp that took you directly to it. So we had to go to the next off-ramp and find our way back. Still, it was so worth the small hassle.

We are planning another trip for the end of this month. I’ll let you know how it goes with Priceline.com

Clicky Is So Much Easier!

Tag: Programming & Internet, Web SitesDustin @ 9:24 am

I wrote a post about how to hack Google Analytics to show the full path on referrer URL. Honestly, its a pain in the butt at best. I went digging around the net and came across a new stat tool that shows the full URL. It’s called Clicky and I have to say, it is so much easier to use that Google Analytics.

A long time ago I used to use pphlogger, which was nice, but I had to install it on my own server and it seem to create a lot of overhead. What I like about it is that I could see what a particular visitor did while on the site.

Clicky gives you the same functionality, but it is in a much nicer format and easier to read.

Plus, they are adding new cool tools continually, like the spy, with allows you to see traffic occurring in real time! This may only be useful to you if you get a lot of traffic ;)

One more feature I have to mention is the ability to make a sites stats public. I set up clicky for a customer and sent her the link the my stats. She LOVES it and she doesn’t have to remember another login to see them. Kudos to me!

So, let’s see what people searched for yesterday to find my blog…

Clicky Searches

So, what are you waiting for, go get Clicky. They have free basic accounts and cheap plans if you have enormous traffic or want a few special features such as the spy and RSS feeds - you do get a free trial on these when you initially sign up.

What do Mormons, PDAs, & DVDs Have in Common?

Tag: LDS, Movies, Web SitesDustin @ 8:54 am

I was looking at some web statistics this morning and I noticed that I had quite a few hits on my DVD site coming from a forum at LDS Mingle. I was intrigued (mostly because I’m LDS) so I signed up temporarily to see what the talk was about. A member there suggested visiting DVD Anthology to track your DVD collection, keep track of movies you loan out and print lists of your movies - exactly what I created the site for :)

Another man piped up and suggested, why bother when you can keep track of all your movies on your PDA and not have to be tied down to the internet. They argued for a bit about the pros & cons of each. I thought it was funny, because little do they know that the creator of DVD Anthology is also the owner of Shilbon Software and LDS PDA! :D

I wanted to join the conversation, but it required that I pay for membership. Since I’m already married I couldn’t see the value in it. ;)

Gmail Delete Shortcut Key

Tag: Programming & Internet, Web SitesDustin @ 1:57 pm

Gmail Trash

I love Gmail, but I find it rather annoying that they feel you never need to delete an email. It took them about 2 years to add the delete button. I don’t know why they didn’t add a shortcut key with it. Certainly, they must have had thousands of requests for it already.Well, I’m happy to report that you can get a shortcut key to move your messages to the trash. But you will need the following:

What to do:

Install Firefox (if you are not using it already), then install the Greasemonkey extension. Then download the Gmail Macros script for Greasemonkey and read this post carefully to learn how it works. Now you can press ‘t’ (for trash) to move that non-spam, unimportant message to the trash!

Local Business on the Net

Tag: Web SitesDustin @ 10:25 am

There are lots of local business on the Internet. I think every business should have a home page. It’s basically like have a really cheap glorified yellow page listing - but so much more. You can share everything about your business and even automate some of your business processes.

There was one occasion where we wanted to get our carpets cleaned. I started with Google, but couldn’t fine any local results. Then I turned to the yellow pages and looked at each of the ones that had websites. When I found one I liked I made the appointment. The person on the phone asked why I selected them. I told her because they had the best website (and believe me, that was not saying much!).

So if you own a local business, make sure you have a website. If you have a website, maybe you could benefit from search engine submission by servicewrap.net.

Tag: Humor, Web SitesDustin @ 1:34 pm

Jar JarI guess I just don’t keep up enough. I only scored a 28 here: http://www.cerado.com/web20quiz.htm

Now I supposed after the popularity of this quiz sets in, all Star Wars characters will eventually become web 2.0 sites :D

I Just Want To Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb

Tag: Web SitesDustin @ 12:31 pm

This site lets you find the single that was number one on the day your were born. On the day I was born it was “I Just Want To Be Your Everything” by Andy Gibb. Sadly, I’ve never head of it. Luckily though, someone has posted it on YouTube so I can re-live the tune that was most likely playing on my first car ride home :)

This page contained an embedded video. Click here to view it.

MusicoveryI stumbled across this website this morning. I thought it was pretty cool. Basically you just click in a little grid based on your mood, it then finds a song in that mood range and other songs nearby to choose from.

Check it out at Musicovery.com - it’s pretty sweet!

Gmail Addresses Ignore Dots

Tag: Web SitesDustin @ 8:03 am

This is interesting. I keep getting emails from a group of people that have mistakenly entered my email address in their CC field. When I look at it though, it is not my address, it is missing the period in between my first and last name. When I was looking at this, I saw a link that said, oddly enough, “Yes, this is you.” Upon clicking the “Learn More” link I found this information:

gmail

Am I receiving someone else’s email?
Gmail doesn’t recognize dots (.) as characters within a username. This way, you can add and remove dots to your username for desired address variations. messages sent to your.username@gmail.com and y.o.u.r.u.s.e.r.n.a.m.e@gmail.com are delivered to the same inbox, since the characters in the username are the same.

Keep in mind that hyphens (-) and underscores (_) can’t be used in a Gmail address. Also, usernames are case insensitive, so it doesn’t matter if you enter upper case or lower case letters.

If you created your account with a dot in your username and you wish you hadn’t, you can change your ‘Reply-to address.’ To change your reply-to address:

1. Click ‘Settings’ at the top of any Gmail page.
2. Enter your username@gmail.com without a dot in the ‘Reply-to address’ field.
3. Click ‘Save Changes.’

When you log in to Gmail, you need to enter any dots that were originally defined as part of your username.

For some reason I thought that when I initially signed up for gmail that dustindavis was taken so I selected dustin.davis. I guess dustin.davis just looked better to me.

Spiderman is the Offspring of Highlander

Tag: Humor, Web SitesDustin @ 8:55 am

So I tried this face recognition tool at My Heritage. The tool is cool. Yes it has some confusing results, but more on that in a minute.

I entered a photo of me and my son. Turns out the number one result for me is Christopher Lambert and the number one result for my son is Tobey Maguire. Cound Spiderman be the son of an immortal? Wait, no, his father died… :P

Anyone, beyond Tobey Maquire I think the system go really confused with my son’s 14 month old face! The following results included Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Estella Warren, Jet Li, Park Ji-Sung & Erykah Badu to name a few.

My other celeb matches are below:
