A Sunday night party that began on the dance floor and ended in jail.

A raid by the anti-narcotics cell on a new bar in Juhu lasted from midnight till early Monday morning claims to have made a major drug bust.

The police sent a woman and a man as decoy who saw several people using drugs and signalled to the police.

Drugs worth over Rs 5 lakh was confiscated from the venue on Monday night.

LSD: 250 drops worth Rs 4,25,000
Ecstacy: 104 tablets worth Rs 1,04,000
Mariuana: 250 gms worth Rs 15,000

But the police methods have sparked a controversy. They swept up everyone at the party, two hundred and thirty one people were rounded up into vans.

Among them was actor Shakti Kapoor's son Siddharth who was the DJ at the party. His father on Monday came out in his defense.

"There weren't any drugs with my son, there never was and there never will be. He is a world popular DJ. He was playing till 11 PM, the other DJ came in after 11 pm. I believe it happened at 11.30 pm when my son stopped playing. The DJ area is separate from the dance area," said Shakti Kapoor, actor.

The police say their real target are not the kids but the 8 suspected drug peddlers who have been arrested.

"The others will give their blood and urine sample and will be released," said Vishwa Nagre Patil, DCP, Anti-Narcotics Cell.

The club is owned by former film producer Prakash Mehra who was not available for comment.

The police claim it is a double-edged sword for them. On one hand they agree that many of those detained were possible victims of circumstance, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. At the same time, they insist that despite raids in Mumbai and Pune, the consumption of drugs at these rave and trance parties has not stopped.

If the bar owners have been allowing peddlers to sell drugs inside the club, then they should be dealt with force. Drug usage is a personal and risky choice, but worse than that is to run an entertainment venue and sell drugs under its guise. Even the DJ needs to be taken to account if he has promoted selling of narcotics. Music production / DJ is an international profession and some elements will give it a bad name. Music and entertainment should not abused by few for their gains.

Fantastic. the authorities are doing a fine job.Earlier they caught red handed the customs officials. But the sad part is we dont know the follow up.These things get swallowed within no time.

Recreational Drugs in minimal doses for adults should be made legal just like alcohol and only served in some specially designated places - not all bars n clubs. May be make them legal for adults above 25. And take all steps to make sure drugs do not get into hands of kids at schools! Im sure adult above 25 are capable of taking their own decisions!
