[image]Searching by keyword

1. Search the Structure database (MMDB) directly

To search for a 3D structure, use the structure name, text words, or other keywords. To look for all terms that begin with a given word, place a "*" at the end of the word. Author names must be in the form "Smith BJ". To restrict searches to particular search fields or to use AND, OR, or NOT to refine searches, read the help documentation. Be aware of variability in annotation and terminology. Not all structures of proteases, for example, will contain the term "protease". Structures and their sequences can be viewed using NCBI's structure-sequence viewer, Cn3D. Click here to search, and then use the form at the top of the page.

2. Search PubMed

It is often easier to find a structure by first searching for keywords in PubMed. This is because PubMed contains the abstracts of articles reporting structures, and these articles contain more keywords than the abbreviated titles present in MMDB. In most cases the articles are hyperlinked to the corresponding 3D structure. To search for structures using PubMed, use the following two steps.

Search PubMed for keywords using the same hints as listed above for MMDB. Select "Structure Links" from the display text-box drop-down and click on the "Display" button.

These steps will produce a list of structures where the corresponding articles contained the keywords you specified.

This same procedure can be accomplished by using the form below to seach PubMed - simply add your terms to the beginning of the text-box. After the search results are displayed, click on the "structure" link next to each article. Note that "AND medline structure[sb]" can be used to restrict any PubMed query.

Use Cn3D, NCBI's structure-sequence viewer, to see the structures returned from the query.
