Jack Handey’s “Deep Thoughts” Random Quote Widget

Posted by Greig under: Widgets .

Here we go - I’ve widgetized the Jack Handey Random Deep Thoughts plugin so that now you can drag and drop it anywhere into your sidebar. I found this particularly useful when I wanted to play around with the order of things on the sidebar. I also changed it from a random quote a day to a random quote each page load in case you can’t get enough of them.

The plugin was originally created by Valerie who deserves due credit. If you prefer the non-widgetized plugin, please visit her site.

To install, just

Download the file here Change the file extension from .php1 to .php ( If you are using Windows XP, you may need to enable viewing of file extensions or just use Notepad to do this) Drop it into your /plugins/widgets directory go to your plugins area in the dashboard of Wordpress and activate it. Should be able to drag and drop to your hearts content.

Any problems, don’t hesitate to ask…

Please Note: at the moment, this widget does not seem to be wordpress 2.1 compatible. Hopefully, before long I will fix the bug. If you’re running wordpress 2.1, check back soon.

Please note: Due to possible copyright infringement issues brought to my attention this widget is no longer available.

Digg!

Nice plugin. Thanks for the widget version.

Using WP 2.1, with plugin activated, your random quotes widget does NOT appear in available widgets under Presentation.

Martin, I am using wordpress 2.0.1 and have not tried it in 2.1, however, I will upgrade to try it out and see what the problem is. Thanks for the heads-up!

Hey there - is your plugin random? Mine’s not! It only changes at midnight (depending on the server’s time).

There is a random version out there: jwurster.us/wordpress/plugins/wp-utterquotes/

Thanks for the plug ;-)

Hey valerie,

Yeah, I changed it so it was random on each page load. I had no idea that other plugin was out there - thanks for the link!

Any progress making this 2.1.2 compatible? I would love to include it on my site.

11 March 2007 at 6:54 pm.

Not yet, bogged down in school and haven’t gotten my head around how wordpress 2.1.2 handles plugins in general. Sorry, I will try and fix this problem in my break next week.

13 March 2007 at 3:37 pm.

Good News! While I might not use it forever, the widget does in fact work in 2.1.2. I must of done something right.

Re: Jack Handey - Unauthorized Use of Deep Thoughts

To Whom It May Concern:

This law firm has been retained by Jack Handey. It has come to
our
attention you have published and distributed over the internet
copies

of one or more of the “Deep Thoughts” (collectively,
“Materials”)
written by Mr. Handey. Your publishing and distribution of these
Materials is without our client’s consent and has infringed our
client’s well-established rights, causing material pecuniary harm,

as

well as emotional and physical distress of a substantial nature.

Mr. Handey is the copyright owner of the Materials and is the
sole
person or entity authorized to grant licenses to publish, copy,
distribute and/or sell the Materials. He has not granted any such

license to you. Your intentional appropriation of the Materials
without securing the proper license is in direct violation of the
express protections afforded our client under copyright law. In
addition, your actions have significantly reduced the value of our

client’s rights in the Materials. As you know, Mr. Handey’s
Materials

have been included in numerous episodes of “Saturday Night Live,”
each

with our client’s express consent and payment to him of
significant

compensation.
Moreover, he has expressly authorized the publication and
exploitation

of the Materials in other copyrighted formats, including daily
calendars and numerous books, all for significant compensation.

Your willful copyright infringement constitutes only a portion
of the
violations which your unauthorized use of our client’s Materials
visits upon our client’s rights at law. Mr. Handey is a celebrity

whose easily identifiable public personality is of proven
commercial

value.
The right to exploit his public identity is legally protected.
Accordingly, your unauthorized exploitation of Mr. Handey’s
name/or

and his writings has violated and continues to violate our
client’s

publicity rights. Each of these deliberate and flagrant
violations

of

our client’s rights renders you liable for damages and other
relief

under federal and state law.

In addition, the unauthorized manner in which you exploit the
Materials is likely to confuse or deceive the public as to the
source

of the Materials. You are blatantly attempting to trade on the
goodwill and widespread long-standing public recognition of Mr.
Handey, in direct violation of the protections afforded our client

under federal and state law.

Further, your unauthorized exploitation of the Materials dilutes
our
client’s control over the quality of products associated with Mr.
Handey. Such unauthorized and uncontrolled use is prohibited by
law

and creates a likelihood of injury to our client’s business
reputation.

We understand that you may simply be a fan of Mr. Handey and his

works. If so, we are sure you can appreciate that we all must be
extremely careful and diligent in protecting the interests of Mr.
Handey. Keep in mind that Mr. Handey is a professional writer.
His

income and his ability to support his family are based on his
ability

to control and exploit his writings. By illegally exploiting his
life’s work, you are stripping him of his livelihood.

Accordingly, we must hereby demand you immediately cease and
delete
all publishing and exploitation of the Materials and of Mr.
Handey’s name, whether on your website or by any other means.
Please

understand, if you do not contact this office within three (3)
days

of

this writing, informing us you have permanently ceased and deleted

all

use and other exploitation of the Materials and of Mr. Handey’s
name,

we will have no choice but to advise Mr. Handey to utilize any and

all

legal and equitable remedies necessary to protect his rights.
Such

remedies include, but will not necessarily be limited to, filing a

lawsuit for injunctive relief, substantial compensatory and
punitive

damages, and payment of Mr. Handey’s attorneys’ fees. For
example,

pursuant to Section 504(c)(2) of Title 17 of the United States
Code,

as amended, a plaintiff whose registered copyrighted work has been

willfully infringed may be awarded damages of over $150,000 per
infringing transaction.

This letter is not intended as a complete recital of the facts
relevant to this matter, nor of our client’s right and remedies,
whether at law or in equity, in each and every country of the
world,

all of which are hereby expressly reserved.

Sincerely yours,

Brian E. Fortman

29 January 2008 at 5:06 am.

Oh, so the copyright police contacted you before me. Funny. I mean, months before. I got my notice just now. heh.

29 January 2008 at 7:29 pm.

Actually, I don’t know how infringing we were but I don’t want trouble. I also find it funny that they commented here thinking they were emailing you, more like bullying than submitting an actual letter, imo. But whatever.

However, could you be so kind as to remove my last name and link from the body of your post? Thanks (sorry, I don’t see a way to email you privately and feel free to kindly delete this comment)

29 January 2008 at 8:02 pm.

No prob on the link etc.

I agree - I didn’t think it was much of an infringment and I though they were a bit bullying too. I didn’t think it was real so I called their office. Turns out they’re legit.

14 February 2008 at 6:21 pm.

Hi –

“Deep Thoughts” is funny and all, but really, I _am_ quite interested in a random quote widget. Could you maybe release it sans-Handey so i can fill in my own quotes?

13 May 2008 at 12:34 am.

Nice widget - but kind of hard to read with all the strike through.

16 July 2008 at 10:00 pm.

It sounds like you need a lawyer. I’m a trademark lawyer myself. Thanks for the article.

21 July 2008 at 1:25 am.

Nope, no one needs a lawyer here…

In fact, I think the last two comments qualify as spam.
