No May MoMo - Call for Advisory Board Members
Thursday, April 27th, 2006Hey everyone,
Sorry to announce there’ll be no Mobile Monday in May. Mike and I didn’t get our stuff together due to personal commitments (work, life, etc.) so we dropped the ball. Actually, Mike is usually the one that gets everything together, but got busy and I wasn’t there to pick up the slack. Sorry for the missed event!
Actually, I’ve decided to take a much less active role in Mobile Monday (if that’s possible) going forward as I dedicate time to other things. Mike is as committed as ever, but he’s obviously going to need help. We’ve actually been talking for a year about expanding the organizational duties beyond just ourselves, but it always seemed easier to just get it done without a lot of fuss. The time has come to make some changes and really make it easy for others to help out.
It’s hard to get things done just by asking for volunteers, however, so we’ll need to formalize things a bit. What we need is not just people that coordinate speakers, venues and snacks for one or two meetups, but people who represent Mobile Monday as an organization and are going to be committed month after month. The best way to do this is to form an official Mobile Monday SV Advisory Board who will be responsible as a group for putting on meetups from now on.
There needs to be a way to make sure that this isn’t just a group of people who all think someone else is going to do the dirty work, so once the board is formed, they’ll need to decide how to divide up the tasks - either through formal roles, or some sort of rotating schedule. (I like the idea of a board electing a Master of Ceremonies each month, don’t you? MC-MoMo!) It’s not actually a lot of work, just lots of quick emails and a phone call or two every month, but it takes people who are responsible and organized (that’s where I fall down) as it’s easy to let a few weeks slip by if you’re not paying attention.
If you’d like to be a part of the MoMoSV Advisory Board, please email the group with your commitment. I don’t know how much interest there will be in this, but I think the minimum requirement is that you’ve attended at least one Mobile Monday event so you understand what we’re about (education and enhancing the mobile community in Silicon Valley, *not marketing*). Mike and I will vet those who are interested to make sure they’re dedicated to the goals of Mobile Monday, and then I will step away after that and the board will decide on things as a group.
I look forward to hearing from everyone.
Thanks,
-Russ
