Mobile Monday San Diego

Friday, August 26th, 2005

There’s a Mobile Monday group starting up in San Diego now too! Surj Patel is organizing the meeting, which is happening on Monday Sept 19th at 7pm, location to be determined. We were really excited when Surj told us he was thinking about getting a group together down there, it’s a fantastic area for a meeting! Best of luck Surj, I’m looking forward to hearing about it.

Mobile Monday North Carolina

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

Tom Karches has organized the first meeting of the North Carolina Research Triangle Park Mobile Monday to happen Monday next week. Great work Tom!

Here are the essential details:

Date : August 15, 2005 Location : NCSU School of Veterinary Medicine, Room D-239 (4700 Hillsborough St., Raleigh NC) Time : 7:00 - 9:00 pm

The topic sounds great, repurposing existing content for mobile devices:

It has not hit critical mass in audience due to several factors; among them are handsets and data plan costs, and the content creators have not hit upon a good metaphor for compelling content. As a result, much video content targeted for mobile use is either edited versions of music videos and cut-down versions of existing video programming (news and sports). Since much of this content is products for much higher resolution devices, user experience is compromised.

We had a couple of independent pings from people looking to start up a MoMo in RTP, seems like there’s a real critical mass there. I had no idea! I would love to hear from the folks after the meeting. What’s being worked on down there? What companies are involved? What were the common topics of discussion?

Another standing room only Mobile Monday! Woohoo! We were actually jam packed into the presentation area and it was *hot* - but the presenters were great fun and had a sense of humor which definitely helped make the evening go quick. Thanks again to Matias, Robert and Ted for presenting and to Carlos and Stanford for hosting us!

As always, you can check out the Mobile Monday photos on Flickr.

See you on September 12th (we’re skipping the first Monday because of Labor Day) - the topic will be Mobile Search! The topic for October will be Mobile Search, presented together with the Search SIG from SDForum. We’ll announce the topic for September on the mailing list soon. W00t!

Presentations Tonight

Monday, August 1st, 2005

Hey folks, don’t forget that Mobile Monday is at Stanford at 7pm tonight. We’ve got a fantastic set of speakers to talk about mobile devices in general. The presentations should answer questions like why device manufacturers are choosing the form factors they are, what the intended market segments are for different devices, what other manufacturing and production decisions are being made to support the goals of those segments. Here’s a list of the device oriented presenters:

Lee Courtney from MontaVista Software Matias Duarte from Danger Inc. Robert Gosselin from Palm Inc.

Fantastic lineup! Thanks go to Romain David and John Kern for help in rounding up the speakers. I’ll point the two of them out so that you can thank them personally. Ted Shelton from Orb Networks is going to drop by and give us a quick update to the presentation he gave on Mobile Media in February. When he gave his presentation Ted promised that Orb would be a platform, so he’s coming by to update us on the programming API.

We also have a few things to give away. Michael Yuan sent us a few copies of his recently published Nokia Smartphone Hacks book we’ll be giving away. And we have a few copies of volume 2 of Make to give out as well. Thanks to Michael for sending the stuff over! See you all tonight.
