February 7th 2005 Meeting

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

We picked the theme of “Mobile Media” for the February MoMo meeting and we got a FANTASTIC set of speakers for the event:

Marc Davis - an assistant professor at the School of information management and systems (SIMS) at the University of California at Berkeley, where he directs Garage Cinema Research. His work is focused on creating the technology and applications that will enable daily media consumers to become daily media producers. (I saw Marc speak at a BayCHI event and knew he would be a perfect presenter for MoMo). Anita Wilhelm - an interaction designer working with mobile device interface design for the past two years. Currently working with camera phones and mobile media. Anita is going to tell us about one of her current projects, Caterpillar Mobile. Caterpillar Mobile is focused on developing multimedia games specifically for handheld devices. Her ultrashort summary: Mobile Media Fun. Ted Shelton - one of the founding members of this group, Ted has recently taken a position as EVP of Operations for Orb Networks. There was a lot of interest in Orb at the last meeting, and Ted has volunteered himself to come fill us in. Here’s a one sentence summary: “The groundbreaking Orb Architecture allows users to access music, live television, videos, photos and other digital content from any device that can connect to the Internet, such as a cell phone, PDA, or notebook.” Idetic, Inc. - the developer of MobiTV, the first global television network that delivers live television programming and on-demand multi-media content to mobile phones. We’re not sure who from Idetic is going to be presenting, but I’ll post that info as soon as I have it.

Wow, that’s a great set of people. Thanks to everyone who helped set up those connections and get people involved. This month the meeting is going to be down south instead of up in San Francisco. We’re meeting at the Microsoft Campus. Here’s the standard info set:

What: Mobile Monday meeting - Mobile Media When: February 7th 2005 7:00pm Where: Microsoft - Building 1- Mercury Room (1065 La Avenida, Mountain View, CA) Who: Anyone interested in mobility Cost: Nothing

I’m really looking forward to this one, see you all there!!

MoMo Tech Gathering

Friday, January 14th, 2005

Hey All,

Mike and I were just chatting and we thought it’d be great to have a Mobile Monday version of the old “HomeBrew” club, where we could get together and *really* geek out, share code, etc. We decided to try an informal gathering over at Mike’s apartment on Monday, January 24th. (We can invade Stanford if the group size gets out of hand).

To come, all you need to have is *running code* that does something cool on or to a mobile phone that you’re willing to share, and we’ll all get together and geek out. The idea is to foster that level of competition/innovation that made the legendary HomeBrew club so great.

Then what we’ll do is try to spotlight some of the cool development stuff at the regular Mobile Monday meetings during one of the 15m presentations. (So don’t feel like you’re missing anything if you’re not a geek. :-) )

RSVP to Mike (you can find him in the Yahoo Group) if you want to come so we can guage the size of interest. If you *know* of a mobile hacker who wants to learn and share (it’s a BitTorrent style meeting) encourage them to sign up as well!

See you then!

Great meeting last night, I’ll do a recap in a bit, but first I’ve created a new Flickr account and uploaded photos from last night’s record breaking meeting.

You can see them all on the side bar, or visiting http://www.flickr.com/photos/mobilemonday/

Please send me your photos and I’ll upload those as well!

Another Speaker for Jan 10th

Friday, January 7th, 2005

Eleanor Kruszewski has offered to speak on “Mobility in the Enterprise” at the January 10th meeting. She’s been working at NEC for a while, tracking mobility among other things. She should be able to give a great view of what the enterprise side is looking at and for. So our lineup so far is now:

Mike Rowehl - What is Mobile Monday? Romain David - The Orange Partner Program Russell Beattie - Mobility Happenings in the Bay Area Eleanor Kruszewski - Mobility in the Enterprise

And still there may be others. Somewhere between the presentations and the chatting, we’ll probably do a quick group announcements. I’ve been to a few meetings where they did this and it worked out very well. If you have something you want to talk about or just want to tell the group, you’ll have an opportunity.

January 10th Agenda

Monday, January 3rd, 2005

Next Monday is the first Mobile Monday meeting of 2005. The topic is “The Mobility Ecosystem in the Bay Area”, and we’re going to have at least three different speakers:

Mike Rowehl - What is Mobile Monday? Romain David - The Orange Partner Program Russell Beattie - Mobility Happenings in the Bay Area

There might be other speakers also, I’ll post an update if there are. We’ll start off with the presentations. Each one should be very short, 15 minutes or less. Just enough to whet everyone’s appetite and fuel the discussion, which starts immediately after the presentations. There will be a few minutes for questions after each presentation, but the focus is on keeping things rolling instead of discussion in depth. The discussion is just free form networking, not a guided discussion. So be ready to hobnob, and pay attention to people who ask interesting questions during the presentations so that you can snag them later and start a conversation.
