Happy Birthday Madonna

Madonna at the premiere of I Am Because We Are...

Today is Madonna's birthday. I don't keep track of these things, but the Brittanica daily newsletter told me - honest!

What's truly amazing about the woman is that not only is today her birthday, but she's actually celebrating her 50th birthday!
When I was a teenager Madonna was one of the hottest stars on the planet. The crazy thing is that she's still out there pumping out new albums and hits - more than 20 years later.

When I was 14 years old I think I had a crush on her, or maybe it wasn't a crush. I honestly don't know. I got to see her live in concert in Roundhay Park in Leeds. Over 20 years later and I still remember it as being one of the best live gigs that I've ever been to.

A typical portable desktop cassette recorder f...

Between my mother moving house and my grandfather's passing I've been forced to go around the country collecting possessions. In amongst the Spanish and French literature I found a few boxes of cassettes, but of course I don't have anything to play them with....

So what tape deck should I get?

I've also recuperated my vinyl collection, but again I've nothing to play them with.

Play With Last.fm

Last.fm's team have made available a couple of web applications that they put together in their spare time.

The "Playground" currently has three applications which take advantage of the huge amount of music data that last.fm aggregates.

You probably won't improve your life much with any of these little apps, but they are fun to play with.

Checking the typos of artists names can be a great way to while away the time, but you could also use the info for seo.

Of course if you wanted to manipulate the data yourself they do offer both data feeds and a full API (though there are licensing conditions to be aware of). For the top artists for users in Ireland try this XML feed

Music To Spring Clean To

This weekend I have to do some serious spring cleaning of the house.

While I am not a "filthy beast" I am definitely not the tidiest of people (understatement!).

I'm going to pop some Lords of Acid into the CD player in a minute and see if I can get started on bringing some order to the chaos

Trip Down Memory Lane - Ella Baila Sola

When I was in Spain in the late 90s one of the female groups that was getting a lot of airplay at the time was Ella Baila Sola. I got to see them in concert (for free) in Madrid during the summer of 1997.

For some odd reason one of their songs has been in my head for the last couple of days, but I couldn't remember the lyrics or the group's name. Trying to work out who it was and what they were called was a bit of a challenge!

The lyrics helped me to improve my Spanish at the time. I think my girlfriend at the time had given me a tape of one of their albums, but that was probably stolen along with all my other tapes a few years later (long boring story!)

Copyright Protection Gone Wrong

Copyright theft is wrong. I've been a victim, so has Donncha and Krystian. (to name but a few!) However, just because some people are being naughty doesn't mean that you can accuse people randomly of infringing rights. A story on Techcrunch this evening shows how wrong the guardians can be at times. Scouta received a DMCA notice for a video that was uploaded by the rights holder! According to techcrunch the notice isn't even compliant with the act, as it does not state where the original content maybe found. I sent Google a DMCA notice following on from my content theft issues and the instructions are crystal clear:
. Identify in sufficient detail the copyrighted work that you believe has been infringed upon (for example, "The copyrighted work at issue is the text that appears on http://www.legal.com/legal_page.html") or other information sufficient to specify the copyrighted work being infringed (for example, "The copyrighted work at issue is the “Touch Not This Cat†by Dudley Smith, published by Smith Publishing, ISBN #0123456789"). 2. Identify the material that you claim is infringing the copyrighted work listed in item #1 above. FOR WEB SEARCH, YOU MUST IDENTIFY EACH SEARCH RESULT THAT DIRECTLY LINKS TO A WEB PAGE THAT ALLEGEDLY CONTAINS INFRINGING MATERIAL. This requires you to provide (a) the search query that you used, and (b) the URL for each allegedly infringing search result. For example, suppose (hypothetically) that you conducted a search on google.com using the query "google", and found that the third and fourth results directly link to a web page that you believe infringes the copyrighted text you identified in item #1 above. In this case, you would provide the following information: Search Query: google Infringing Web Pages: www.infringingwebsite.com directory.infringingwebsite.com If you are sending a large number of URLs in one removal request, please also send an electronic copy of the notice to removals@google.com. 3. Provide information reasonably sufficient to permit Google to contact you (email address is preferred). 4. Provide information, if possible, sufficient to permit Google to notify the owner/administrator of the allegedly infringing webpage or other content (email address is preferred). 5. Include the following statement: "I have a good faith belief that use of the copyrighted materials described above as allegedly infringing is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law." 6. Include the following statement: "I swear, under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notification is accurate and that I am the copyright owner or am authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed."
Source So now even if you own the rights you run the risk of being sent take down notices? It's a bit like the abuse reports we've been getting for sites we don't even host!
