Adding DNSBLs Into Exim

| 2 Comments

I've mentioned DNS blacklists several times in the past.

They can be a very powerful tool in the war on spam, but they can also cause you headaches. You can think of them as the "nuclear option" or "the last resort" if you wish.

Before you implement DNSBL checks at the SMTP level you need to check and doublecheck how the blacklist you are considering works. Please please please check this and check it again.

On my personal mail server, which isn't running Mailscanner, I rely almost entirely on two things to keep spam out:
Greylisting DNSBLs
Yes I do get some spam, but not enough for me to be overly concerned. I think I get about 2 spam emails a day on average.

In any case if you want to add DNSBLs into exim these are the basic steps that you could / should follow.

You will need to edit exim.conf, so make sure you have a backup first:

cp exim.conf exim.conf.backup

Once you have got your backup you will then need to add in the DNSBLs you want to use.

In exim.conf there should be a section labelled "ACLs", which might be around line 300 (or thereabouts).
This section basically controls what or who has access to your SMTP and how to treat mails.
We added in a couple of basis blocks after the first set:
#nuclear customisation to take load off
deny
    dnslists    = sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
    message     = $sender_host_address is listed in $dnslist_domain\
                  ${if def:dnslist_text { ($dnslist_text)}}

So in the example above we're blocking based on SpamHaus' sbl-xbl list.

There may have been other customisations, but that's the main one.

NB: This will also stop users from accessing your SMTP to send mail if their IPs are listed.
Someone asked me to post this example. It may work. It may not. The information is provided as is in good faith. YMMV

As I mentioned a few days ago, MailScanner's Julian Field is currently in hospital where he is in a serious condition. According to a posting today from one of Julian's colleagues he is on the mend:
Hi again, Today's news is that Jules is very awake and alert, and is drinking tea. Those who know him well know he gets through a fair few gallons of tea, so this is a good sign :) Also the doctors are wanting to get him out of intensive care as soon as a bed in another ward becomes free, another good sign. Let's hope the recovery continues. It may be hard to keep him offline before long! I'll ramp down the reporting frequency a bit now unless there's anything significant to say. Please do keep cards coming, I'm sure they'll continue to be very well received. Tim

Pre-talk Nerves

| 2 Comments
I'm scheduled to give a talk in the University of Limerick this afternoon as part of Skynet's conference - Skycon. Even though I've given plenty of talks in the past I am always incredibly tense beforehand. This afternoon I'll be talking about email filtering on a large scale :) As there are quite a few hardcore geeks onsite today I'm hoping they'll all have gone to the other talk!!

SkyCon Talk Topic

| 5 Comments
Rather than try to reinvent the wheel and in order to keep in tune with the Open Source / Technical flavour of Skycon.... I've decided to give the talk on email filtering using MailScanner... Since that sounds very uninspired I'll see if I can come up with a sexier title. How about: Mine's big enough! - Filtering 50,000 users' mail using open source technology It doesn't have a great ring to it... OR Phishers and phuckers Neither exactly scream "inspired!"

Skycon Talk?

| 10 Comments
Laura has put a gun to my head. I have to decide on a topic for my talk at Skycon and I've got about 24 hours to do it. For once I won't be the only representative from Blacknight presenting!! Paul, in a possible moment of madness, also agreed to give a talk. As he's a hardcore geek he'll probably be right at home, whereas I'm a little more wary. What should I give a talk on?? Bearing in mind that it's quite a technical conference, judging by the timetable, what would people recommend? I was contemplating doing something on email filtering. (The last talk I gave in UL was on SEO) Any thoughts?

Why oh why do people in ENN simply publish companies' press releases as if they were gospel? It just so happens that I have a conflicting set of results... Odd that, isn't it? Top 10 spam countries November 2006 Note the inclusion of actual figures ie. you can see how many emails were involved, as opposed to a vague and unscientific statement with no actual figures to support its conclusions (they may have the data, but it never makes it into the press releases)

Like so many other bloggers it looks like I'm going to be going down the interview route a bit as well.... In my case I'd like to talk to people whose work fits in with my own particular set of interests, so the first person I've asked to give an interview is Julian Field, who is the developer of MailScanner I won't be podcasting this particular interview, as it will be conducted via email and I still haven't quite got my mic working on Ubuntu :) So, if anyone has any questions that they'd like to ask Julian please let me know via the comments

Julian has just released the August version of MailScanner and, as usual, has made a great bit of software even better. One of the things that has always been awkward to track were changes in the config ie. our custom changes vs. Julian's default settings. You can now see this easily by running: MailScanner --changed which will output a table of values that have been changed. For example: Table of Changed Values: Option Name Default Current Value =============================================================================== allowpasswordprotectedarchives no yes alwaysincludespamassassinreport no yes alwayslookeduplast no FUNCTION:MailWatchLogging Other changes and full details are documented in the change log.
