Rod Allen on WDFN: Tigers could trade for pitcher if they can find one

by Jonathan Oosting | MLive.com

[image]If there's a pitcher available that can help the Detroit Tigers, general manager Dave Dombrowski will go get him, says Tigers color commentator Rod Allen, right.

Eddie Bonine may cement himself in the Tigers' rotation. But if general manager Dave Dombrowski eyes an available starting pitcher, he won't be shy to pull the trigger, color commentator Rod Allen told Matt Sheppard on WDFN-AM's It Is What It Is.

The only problem? The two premier starters thought to be on the trading block, CC Sabathia and Rich Harden, already have been dealt.

"If there's a guy out there that makes sense for them, they will go out and get that guy," Allen said. "I just don't know who that is right now."

Justin Verlander is finally throwing like the ace he is, thanks in large part to his renewed reliance on his fastball.

"That's the biggest difference for me is Verlander is pitching like a power pitcher now and not a touch-and-feel guy," Allen said.

The Tigers' current home stand will give the team an opportunity to make up ground before the All-Star break against Central Division opponents, whom they've played poorly against this season.

"They have to beat Minnesota," Allen said. "Somebody tell Minnesota you're not supposed to be doing what you're doing right now. ... The Tigers need to show them that when they come to town."

Listen to the whole interview to hear Allen's take on the impact of missing Magglio Ordonez and the Tigers' defensive woes :

Great Statements: I really do think they should have kept Eddie Bonine. I thought he was really coming around, but Leyland thought different. Too much trading around right now is good in one way and bad in another. Can't wait for Magglio and Brandon to come back.. Hopefully we can get some runs in when the bases are loaded. They certainly are having a problem with that.

They need some more pitching to contend. Somebody has to tell Leyland that Robertson is ONLY good for 5 innings, 6 max, after that he is garbage. If Sheffield doesn't hit in the next few weeks, they need to start looking for another right handed bat too.
