Michigan's Sheridan ready to take on Ohio State

by John Heuser | The Ann Arbor News

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 6:34 AM

[image]University of Michigan quarterback Nick Sheridan (8) will start against No. 10-ranked Ohio State on Saturday.

The last time the University of Michigan football team won in Columbus, Ohio, the 19th-ranked Wolverines were led on offense by junior Drew Henson, one of the nation's highest-rated recruits coming out of Brighton High School.

The year was 2000, and Henson completed 14 of 25 passes for 303 yards, threw three touchdowns and ran for another in Michigan's 38-26 victory.

Injured Minor wants to play against Ohio State

by John Heuser | The Ann Arbor News

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 6:31 AM

[image]After missing six consecutive games with a foot injury, University of Michigan running back Carlos Brown (23) ran for a team-high 115 yards in a 21-14 loss to Northwestern last Saturday.

Running back Brandon Minor wasn't healthy enough to practice Sunday, but he has no intention of missing the University of Michigan's upcoming game at No. 10-ranked Ohio State.

"It's O-State. Nothing much said there. It's O-State. Got to play them," Minor said Monday.

The junior will try and practice today to judge how well he has recovered from myriad injuries, including a bad shoulder that was the primary reason he missed last Saturday's loss to Northwestern.

"Last week, it was real close," Minor said. "But I couldn't pull it out."

VanOchten on The Huge Show: Lions' Marinelli well-liked, but that won't save him

by The Grand Rapids Press

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 1:06 AM

Grand Rapids Press columnist Brian VanOchten joined Bill Simonson inside the "GR Press Box" to talk about the Detroit Lions' latest loss, 31-22 to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and the possible future of coach Rod Marinelli.

"I think there are a few guys on that team that may have given up on him," VanOchten said. "But, for the most part, the players love this guy, they love playing for him because he is the rah-rah guy. He's not going to go south on his guys. There's a certain nobility in that. Problem is, as everyone can see, it doesn't produce any results."

Mayo on The Huge Show: Thornton has chance to earn more playing time for Spartans

by The Grand Rapids Press

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 12:51 AM

Grand Rapids Press columnist David Mayo joined Bill Simonson inside the "GR Press Box" to talk about Cedar Springs' Austin Thornton's performance in Michigan State's basketball game Sunday and how the Spartans' football team will fare against Penn State on Saturday.

"He can shoot and he showed that last night," said Mayo of Thornton, who finished with nine points against Idaho. "Throw him in of the first half of the first game, when he may not expecting it, and see what happens. What happened was he remembered what he had been told: 'If you get a shot, you better take it.'"

Smith keeps sense of humor about Lions' record

by Tom Kowalski | Commentary

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 12:15 AM

ALLEN PARK -- He doesn't have any NFL victories yet, but Detroit Lions running back Kevin mith is still clinging to his sense of humor -- and hope for the future.

When asked about hitting his first 100-rushing game on Sunday, Smith said, "Having 100 yards was OK but every back on the field had 100 yards."

Slowly but surely, Pistons adjusting to Iverson

by A. Sherrod Blakely

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 12:15 AM

[image]Allen Iverson is averaging 21.8 points per game over the Pistons' last four games.

PHOENIX -- When a major change is made, rarely is there a flawless transition.

The Detroit Pistons know this all too well. Ever since Allen Iverson arrived in Detroit, the team has had to work through the ups and downs of the trade, as well as incorporate a new face into its lineup.

"It's a work in progress," said Joe Dumars, Detroit's president of basketball operations. "Ten days, two weeks, it's really not enough time to make a full evaluation. But we do like the direction we're headed."

Tigers' Dombrowski checks market on shortstops

by Steve Kornacki

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 12:10 AM

[image]One report says the Tigers are interested in trading for Boston shortstop Julio Lugo.

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers are talking trade in regard to obtaining a shortstop, and Julio Lugo appears to be one they are interested in acquiring.

The Boston Globe reported Sunday that the Red Sox are considering a deal with the Tigers for either Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson.

"We're having ongoing conversations with a couple of clubs and some free agent (shortstops)," Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said Monday, while neither confirming nor denying the discussions with Boston. "I would not say the situation is crystallizing, but we are getting a better idea of our options."

Red Wings' Cleary still battling eye injury

by Michael Zuidema | The Grand Rapids Press

Tuesday November 18, 2008, 12:07 AM

DETROIT -- Dan Cleary can't drive, and his depth perception still is a little off.

But he is doing his best to stay in shape while he recovers from an irritation in his left eye.

Cleary skated at Joe Louis Arena on Monday for the first time since a Nov. 8 game against the New Jersey Devils. He did some off-ice workouts and hopes to skate by himself this week while the Detroit Red Wings are on a three-game road trip.

MSU's Izzo comments on passing of Pete Newell

by Steve Grinczel | Grinz on Green

Monday November 17, 2008, 11:31 PM

EAST LANSING -- Pete Newell stood among the giants in basketball, although not because of his modest contribution to Michigan State tradition.

Nevertheless, Newell, who died Monday at the age of 93, was the head coach that ushered Michigan State College into Big Ten competition during the 1950-51 season.

Phelps excited about new venture operating pool

by Rachel Cohen | The Associated Press

Monday November 17, 2008, 10:05 PM

[image]Michael Phelps waves to the crowd before the Wisconsin game at Michigan Stadium on September 27.

NEW YORK - Michael Phelps had long hoped to venture into the sports business world, so operating the pool where he trains was a natural way to get his feet wet.

"I'm going to have to learn a lot, but I'm ready for it," Phelps said Monday at USA Swimming's annual Golden Goggle Awards banquet.

Phelps and his coach, Bob Bowman, announced earlier this month that their partnership is taking over the Meadowbrook Aquatic Center and the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where Phelps began training at age 7.

"It's going to be fun," Phelps said. "It's something different, something that I've never done before. Bob and I have had a great relationship over the last 10 years or so, so why not try some other things to see if we can master that?"

SEC charges Mark Cuban with insider trading

by Marcy Gordon | The Associated Press

Monday November 17, 2008, 9:41 PM

[image]Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban yells at referees an NBA game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Nov. 9.

WASHINGTON - Federal regulators on Monday charged Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban with insider trading for allegedly using confidential information on a stock sale to avoid more than $750,000 in losses.

Cuban disputed the Securities and Exchange Commission's allegations and said he would contest them.

In a civil lawsuit filed in federal court in Dallas, the SEC alleged that in June 2004, Cuban was invited to get in on the coming stock offering by Mamma.com Inc. after he agreed to keep the information private.
