Red Wings' Cleary still battling eye injury
by Michael Zuidema | The Grand Rapids Press
Monday November 17, 2008, 10:30 PM
DETROIT -- Dan Cleary can't drive, and his depth perception still is a little off.
But he is doing his best to stay in shape while he recovers from an irritation in his left eye.
Cleary skated at Joe Louis Arena on Monday for the first time since a Nov. 8 game against the New Jersey Devils. He did some off-ice workouts and hopes to skate by himself this week while the Detroit Red Wings are on a three-game road trip.

Update from Monday's morning skate: Wings forward Dan Cleary was back at Joe Louis Arena, starting off-ice workouts after a rough week dealing with his bad left eye. He can barely open the eye, which still is extremely red. He said it's painful and itches a lot.
Cleary said it's not an infection, as they originally thought. The cornea was scratched for a second time last week, before the first scratch healed.

DETROIT -- Backup goaltender Ty Conklin will make his first regular-season start at Joe Louis Arena tonight for the Detroit Red Wings, who will try to reverse the bad habits at home that have led to turnovers and sloppy defensive play.
The Red Wings have allowed fewer than three goals only once in six home games and are 3-1-2 at Joe Louis.

Update from Sunday's practice: Forward Dan Cleary still hasn't resumed skating due to his left eye infection. Coach Mike Babcock said Cleary will not accompany the team on its upcoming three-game road trip to western Canada, meaning he'll miss at least the next four games, including Monday's home game against Edmonton.
"They're working with his eye. He has some sort of scratch,'' Babcock said. "I think what they did for him originally kind of worked the wrong way, so it's taken more time than they expected.''
Cleary has not even been cleared to do any off-ice workouts, so he is losing a lot of his conditioning.
Red Wings will have to choose: Franzen or Hossa
by Ansar Khan
Sunday November 16, 2008, 1:00 AM
Johan Franzen emerged as a top scorer for the Red Wings in the playoffs last season.DETROIT -- Every NHL team would covet a big, strong forward with a deft scoring touch who is tough to contain in the offensive zone and is committed to playing well in his own end.
The Detroit Red Wings are reaping the benefits of having two of these premier power forwards: Marian Hossa and Johan Franzen.
They must maximize Hossa and Franzen's one season together, however, because the league's salary cap, in all likelihood, will prevent the Red Wings from retaining one of them.

SUNRISE, Fla. -- On a day when temperatures reached the mid-80s in southern Florida, Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood kept his cool.
Osgood was steamed after Thursday's 4-3 victory in Tampa Bay, too upset to speak to the media. The source of his frustration? A highly uncharacteristic 3.28 team goals-against average.
