A few scenarios possible between Rogers, Lions
by Tom Kowalski
Saturday October 11, 2008, 12:30 AM
Charles Rogers owes the Detroit Lions $8.5 million.ALLEN PARK -- Now that former receiver Charles Rogers has lost an $8.5 million judgment to the Detroit Lions, what's the next step?
Other than confirming they won their grievance case against Rogers, the Lions refuse to comment further. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is not involved and directed all questions to the Lions.
Rogers could not be reached for comment.
Rogers was paid $14.2 million in bonus money by the Lions after being selected No. 2 overall in the 2003 draft. When Rogers was suspended for four games during the 2005 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, his third strike in the program, the Lions argued Rogers defaulted on his contract.
The Lions filed a grievance that season, and it took nearly three years for the matter to be settled by arbitration. Neither the Lions nor Rogers were charged legal fees, because once the grievance is filed, the matter is taken up by the NFL Management Council and the players union. Legal fees are paid by a fund financed by the league and the players.
The Lions are expected to turn the matter over to their attorneys, who will have to go through some routine steps to give the arbitrator's decision legal standing, allowing the club to enforce the judgment against Rogers.
Rogers has not made any money from his football career since he was cut in the 2006 training camp. He worked out for several NFL teams in 2006 and 2007, but never was offered a contract.
A player agent who represents several NFL players, but not Rogers, said one of three likely scenarios eventually will play out:
1. Rogers doesn't have enough money left or assets remaining that would make it worth the Lions to pursue.
2. Rogers still has money and/or assets, but will file personal bankruptcy to stop the Lions from enforcing the judgment.
3. Rogers still has money and/or assets remaining, but will come to a settlement with the Lions. The agent said the Lions likely would be open to an agreement for partial payment, because if Rogers opts for bankruptcy, the club would get nothing.
Whatever money the Lions can collect from Rogers will be credited to the team's 2009 salary cap.
Bankruptcy laws have changed. You cant have a few million dollars and just go bankrupt and have all your debts go away. It just doesnt work that way tom. Rogers would have to illegally hide his money in this case.
i see rogers tooling around in his blue convertible all the time near my work in novi.he isn't broke

The reason Tom is not answering your question is it is lame. Why the hell would WCF pay Rodgers another 8.5 million so he can then recoup it for a salary cap. The tax ramifications of even attemping this is the reason why it won't happen. He actually would have to pay him 8.5 million plus the goverments cut of the pay, so he would have to pay him several million more. In the business world simple math does not exist. He would lose several million on the transaction so you could get the cap space back and he could spend it again. So yes, he could but he would be stupid too do it. Also lacing your posts with F-Bombs really makes Killer want to answer.
does not matter what the lions want
it all went up in smoke!

Lions need to tap into the $700billion taxpayer bailout money, and submit this as an uncollectable debt.
Clearly, the Lions situation is at least as dire as the banking sector's.
click,
way to think outside the box. While this idea may not be likely for tax reasons and precedence (as expresed by lionhawk), it is forward thinking and it should be dignified with a response from killer.
I hope our new GM is just as able to think outside the box as our Mlivers.
ps this is the LIONS forum. we are lucky people are tossing Fbombs and not A bombs!

Between the hippy lettuce, hookers and the stock market how could he be worth anything? Why does a simple decision like this take three years? A year or two ago he might had had a few bucks, probably not now.
So, let's see. The agent gets his money. The Lions got a player. But Rogers has to pay most of his back?
Great system.
Make Millen pay it back instead.
Can we all say Andre Johnson... Anyway he smoked it all up...
quitin hatin on my boy chuck! he was a freshman when i was a senior at saginaw high..go trojans!!! proud member of 96 basketball state champs!!!! trojans!!!
The saddest part about this whole thing (besides the obvious Millen/scouting mistake) is a wasted life. I haven't read anything about his personal life recently, but I can't imagine he has turned himself around and begun anew. He had incredible natural talent but chose to throw it away.

Just another small straw that will add to the back breaking going on in Wall Street.
This money got "thrown" away, literally.
I second the motion to make Millen pay what Rogers can't.
Besides it sounds like sound investments -- women, drugs and booze. Better than the stock market and much more enjoyable.
Matt -
If you really want to help this team, your former team, you can do it now. Give Chuck the money to pay back the Lions and help get a couple new players next year.
Just do it Millen, it will never make a difference in your life style and make your last effort a good effort. Go out with at least an once of dignity.
GoWinLions - I get your point. However I for one have no patience for anyone given more money than anyone of us will ever see in our lifetime and is willing to throw it away for the sake of "keeping it real".
If you are so stupid that you would risk many more millions of dollars and your career in the NFL for more bong hits with your boys then you are a total idiot.
Its not Charles Rodgers who you should be concerned about. Believe me hes not hurting. The real shame in all of this is us Lions fans who once again have to sit back and watch ANOTHER failure of a high draft choice laugh in our face.
I see my post got deleted for no reason. What I said for those who did'nt get to read it before it got unfairly erased here's what I said in a milder manner-
Why can't WCF pay Rogers 8.5 million to wash his cars or walk his dogs or something along those lines and then make Rogers pay it right back to the Lions????? So what if Ford has to pay 2 more million in taxes, I don't think thats much money to the Fords, thats like chump change to them. If they are really trying to build a winner in Detroit it seems like they would do whatever it takes to help the team. Again, Jerry Jones or Al Davis would do this for their teams.
By the I did'nt write the F word, I simply used symbols in place of the letters which everyone on this forum does. Is it really fair to delete posts when people challenge the writter for a response?? I don't see other writers or reporters doing this. When you have a job like that you are going to get challenged by the public with questions. Thats part of the job.
BIGREED
Chuck has been an embarassment to Saginaw since he was in High School.
Best NFLer out of SHHS is Woodley now, at least hes humble enough to come back to saginaw and work out at the YMCA. Chuck was getting stabbed with forks and rollin blunts.
vsledge2,
LMAO!!! Thanks brotha! Killer will never respond to that question though. I think he's scared to challenge the Fords. They are pretty powerful people. I asked him during his lunch QandA and I sent him an email, he's scared to death of the question.
The Lions went through this process believing he could still make a team in the NFL or CFL 3 years ago. What has he been doing since then, I know he didnt graduate from MSU.....
Just because he has a nice car doesnt mean he has a lot of money.
He did have all the money a few months ago, but it was all invested in Lehman Bros. So sad...
The fact that Rogers was a pothead was the best unkept secret in East Lansing. True, it is shame that Rogers threw his life away on drugs but as far as the Lion's getting any money back they should go after Millen for the 8.5 mill. Millen either didn't do his homework or did know and ignored the fact that Rogers had drug issues.
Either way Millens fault for paying him all that doe. Millen should be held accountable. I hope the Lion's get stiffed would serve them right.
Rogers is still hanging around in Saginaw, He was at Lamar Woodleys youth football camp this summer. He has a son with some local woman.
If they lose 38 - 13 Sunday, I'm going to call that improvement.
Ways to see if the Lions have improved:
1 HOF committee, on hand, only hands out 1 automatic induction to the Leo's opponent.
2 Making a first down in the 1st quarter.
3 Roy only drops three.
4 Calvin gets mad once.
5 Cory Redding is deactivated.
6 Marinelli only wastes two timeouts a half.
7 Lions almost get a sack in the 1st half
Raiola embarrassed.

Thats the best laugh Ive had all year! The lions want money from that loser, to ad to there salary cap next year? Rodgers is a stoner, he spent all that money on pot & munchies dude! This is a total waste of time! We can blame matt millen for this wasted 1st down pick! Did millen even have a scouting report on chuck! Did any one check out his past or do a drug test? He played 3 years as a lions and had 3 strikes on the NFL substance policy! unbelievable!
how cananybody be sympathetic to Charles Rogers?
Pothead
NFL bust of major proportion
Loser
This guy should be made to pay ME money for buying his freeking jersey!
I think his picture said it all,if a picture is worth a thousand words his is worth 8.5million word,
12-4-tillfurthernotice
good question click& so nicely put LOL.
I dont usally watch football outside mich, but this OK VS TEX is one of the best games in quite awhile, toledo just beat mich im going to go CRY now goodbye!
When you draft a guy with the 2nd overall pick that had a strike against him from the combine and you knew it,you get what you deserve.Talk about a stupid draft pick.I think it's unfair to rogers to have to pay these clowns a dime. This team is flat-out stupid at every turn and still are.Pretending like waiting til the end of the season to start building for 09 is right up there.Killer is deseratly wrong about this topic and the lions are conducting business as usual.Stupid
Thanks blucat! I was a little pizzed at Killer last night for not researching ways to be sneaky about recovering this money. Everyone knows Rogers smoked it all up so why not beat the system and get us that 8.5 for our salary cap next year. That money could atleast allow us to sign one big play maker off free agency like Albert Haynesworth, Nnagi Assummi or however its spelled or Julius Peppers. We need that money!!!
We could also do like a lot of these posters are saying and not pay Millen. If Al Davis does'nt have to pay Kiffen then why do we have to pay Millen. It is Millens fault we drafted this clown in the first place. Don't pay Millen, pay Rogers and allow him to pay it back to the Lions.
By the way guys, how about that Oklahoma vs Texas game!!!! I told you guys those are the best 2 QB's in the nation. I think Oklahoma really got screwed with that interception call though. I would love it if the Lions could somehow draft Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy!! We have to have an O-line in place first though.
I don't think option 2 is as simple as Tom says. You can't just declare bankruptcy and not pay your creditors if you have assets. This is especially true with the new bankruptcy laws. If Rogers still has money, he can protect some assets but the remainder would be distributed to his creditors, including the Lions. It seems they would get a partial payment depending on how much money they have.
if you listened to brian billick last sunday, charles rogers is still on the team. and mike williams too.
it's a toss-up between the lion-minny game and the was-stl game on which is the worst, whichever bottom rung announcers are there, they will again be incredulous at the ineptness of the lions.
beaten badly by gus frerotte. when will this misery end.
I promise a victory tomorrow, I will shut down Peterson's running game!
Forever a Lion
Paris
agree with detfan99 who recommended giving drew hensen a try to make it as lion QB.
unfortunately the lion coaching staff would never do this because they only evaluate plays on film and the wolverines henson film got lost somewhere doggone it.
How sad. Not that I feel bad for Charles, because I didn't hold the joint up to his lips or blow marijuana smoke into his lungs or coke up his nostrils, but just sad because it wasn't supposed to happen this way. His first couple of games with the Lions, it looked like it was going to be a beautiful thing. What a waste.
MEN
If Chuck claims broke, the Lions need to GIVE him $8.5 million.
Why? Because they will then get $8.5 million in cap relief for next year. Screw Chuck, forget the money, but GET the cap relief.
