Oct 01, 2007: I hate National City Bank
What ever happened to banks being thankful that I'm giving them my money to use? They ought to be giving me interest for the privilege of using my money. Instead, National City is charging me fees every chance they get. I've had enough.
I went to my local National City bank branch today to withdraw some cash. I have a checking account there I use as savings; most of my day-to-day banking is done elsewhere.
Since I don't like ATM fees, and I didn't have my card at the time, I went inside to see a teller. When I ask for the withdrawal, the teller tells me there's a $1 teller charge.
I was stunned speechless. The bank that charges me an ATM fee for not using a teller is now charging me a Teller Fee since I'm not using an ATM?
I then told her, "OK, but this is the last time I'm doing this." I know it's not the teller's fault, so I didn't rant at her. It's the bank's fault - and I'll speak in a language they can understand. After getting my cash, I closed one of my 2 accounts. I'll close the other one after my automatic deposit is shut off.
Oh, did I mention the problems with the other account? They called that account "inactive" since I hadn't had an automatic deposit going for "6 to 9 months" (even the teller wasn't sure of the time frame). Never mind that I've had this account for 2 years, and never once had an automatic deposit. I've had activity on the account every few months, always within the 6 month window.
What does "inactive" mean? My free checking changed to another type of checking (without them telling me), that has a $7 per month fee. I only noticed once they had drained the account empty and sent me overdraft notices. Thanks, that's real nice.
When I went in to check on what was going on, they dug and looked around. After letting the teller look into it for 2 days, she called back saying that I was right - it was a mistake. They were going to reverse the charges and change the account back to free checking.
When I closed that account today, I noticed that they had lied to me. No refunded fees.
Rather than stand there for an hour (again) and argue with a teller, I decided to speak in a language that they can understand. Their nickel & diming me over a little account is going to cost them that account and my main savings account. I'm packing up and leaving.

Oh, and stay away from 5th 3rd too. They charged me over $350 in overdraft fees in one day, and refused to even admit that this was excessive. I have yet to meet anyone what has a fee even partialy refunded from 5th 3rd. I've closed business accounts I had with them because of this. No soup for you.
