1974
First International Evangelism Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, called by Rev. Billy Graham.
1975
U.S. Lausanne Committee formed as a statement by American leaders of their desire for the evangelization of America.
1989
Second International Evangelism Conference held in the Philippines.
1990
U.S. Lausanne Committee feels called to become proactive in strengthening evangelism efforts in the United States.
1993
U.S. Lausanne Committee sponsors a Prayer Summit in Portland, Oregon. At the close of the meeting, those gathered unanimously affirm that The U.S. Lausanne Committee should give leadership to increasing prayer and evangelism efforts in the U.S. With the consensus of that group and marching orders from The U.S. Lausanne Committee, later that year Mission America was officially launched with a small staff and office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
1995
Mission America and The Billy Graham Center cosponsor a National Consultation on Evangelism in Lisle, Illinois with some 165 U.S. Christian leaders participating. This meeting is now considered the birthplace of The Mission America Coalition (MAC).
1996
MAC convenes second National Consultation on Evangelism in Washington D.C. MAC officially launches participation in Celebrate Jesus 2000 – an effort to pray for and share the Gospel with every person in America.
1997-1999
MAC builds Coalition and provides a rallying point for Christians to focus on The Great Commission by encouraging partner involvement in CJ2000.
1999
The Lighthouse Movement is launched by the Coalition to help mobilize the church to pray for, care for and share Jesus Christ with every person in America.
Dr. Bill Bright and Dr. Steve Douglas (Campus Crusade for Christ, International) dedicate their radio program as the daily radio voice of The Lighthouse Movement. Promise Keepers promotes Lighthouses at their stadium events, challenging nearly 300,000 men to establish a Lighthouse. An estimated one million people participate in “Light the Nation,” a two-hour live focus on The Lighthouse Movement hosted by Harvest Evangelism. Christian Broadcasting Network (700 Club) airs two Lighthouse Movement television specials. PRAY! Magazine releases a special Lighthouse-focused edition. Over 700 Christian radio stations run announcements and special programming during November encouraging listeners to become Lighthouses.
2000
Over 20,000 college students gather via satellite to pray and fast together. Sponsored by Campus Renewal, the students were introduced to The Lighthouse Movement and encouraged to become Lighthouses.
Through the Book of Hope Campaign, thousands of Christians work together in a targeted effort to bring the Bible to millions of American homes. Coordinated by The Christian Broadcasting Network, 7-million Books of Hope were distributed during Easter week.
During Easter to Pentecost, The 50-Day Spiritual Adventure from Chapel of the Air (Mainstay Ministries) gave motivation and tools for Lighthouse Churches to reach out to neighbors and others who don’t know Jesus Christ. The action steps of The Adventure were keyed to the Lighthouse lifestyle of “pray, care and share.”
Coalition leaders feel God drawing them together to underscore the importance of evangelism, but also to expand their focus. After much prayer and discussion, members broaden their vision to include three areas of emphasis: evangelism, spiritual unity and revival/spiritual awakening.
2001
“An Urgent Appeal for Christian Leaders in America for Consensus and Collaboration on the Biblical Hope of Corporate Revival” is released by The Revival Network of MAC.
Members of MAC respond to the September 11th attacks on America by releasing the “Prayer By The Nation, For The Nation” to help Americans speak to God with one voice and address feelings of fear and anger following the tragic events. Thousands of churches participate in reading the prayer together on the National Day of Prayer and Mourning.
MAC assists in the launch of The Presidential Prayer Team.
Just one month following the terrorist attacks, MAC leaders form a new ministry outreach, appropriately named 911 Remembrance, to help meet the spiritual needs of Americans by getting the Gospel into every home.
MAC partners form The Christian Emergency Network to assist Christians in sharing the eternal hope of Jesus in times of national crisis, through a joint prayer, care and share ministry and media response.
2002
MAC becomes a clearinghouse of information, seminars and ministry resources to assist Lighthouse Christians and Lighthouse Churches. The Association of Lighthouse Churches is launched in April to provide resources and encouragement for Lighthouse Churches.
Thousands of churches hold September 11th Remembrance Services. Designed to preserve the memory of the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks and provide hope for all, the services were coordinated by MAC to assist churches in offering meaningful, effective evangelistic outreach in their communities.
The Proclamation Evangelism Network announces a mission to proclaim Christ publicly in every city in the United States by year-end 2015.
City and Community Ministries expands communication and coordination of ministry to and with 1100 city leaders in over 400 cities focused on holistic evangelism.
Twenty-three MAC Ministry Networks have full-time or part-time facilitators who relate directly to MAC for guidance and resources.
2003
Turn on the Light, America! launched in April to help bring unity and focus to evangelistic events and a grassroots evangelism movement among the Coalition and the broader body of Christ.
Thousands of churches and dozens of city movements participated in marking the second anniversary of 9/11/01 through Honor Our Heroes services on Memorial Day, July 4, 9/11/03 and Veteran’s Day. Over 65 denominations and 10 resource providers worked together to help churches reach many with the good news of Jesus Christ.
A strategic alliance with the National Association of Evangelicals was developed wherein the Coalition now serves the NAE in the area of evangelism.
In August, the Coalition brought together dozens of Christian entertainment professionals in Hollywood with the mission of networking, equipping and encouraging them to positively impact culture with the Gospel through film and television.
Nearly 1,000 people attended the October MAC Annual Meeting in New York City. “The Gospel In The City – A National Leadership Forum” (NLF), was the largest Coalition annual meeting to date.
Mrs. Vonette Bright (Campus Crusade for Christ – Women Today International) was named new Honorary Co-Chair of MAC, assuming the role held by her husband Dr. Bill Bright before his death.
In December, MAC hosted a meeting of leaders for a special screening of the Mel Gibson movie “The Passion Of The Christ.” The meeting offered many leaders their first opportunity to view the film, hear from producer Mel Gibson and pray and strategize about appropriate follow-up to enhance the film’s use for outreach.
Cities/Communities developes a new web site (www.cityreaching.com) to share city reaching resources and information. The site has become the number one web site on major search engines when the words “City Reaching” are entered.
Regular communication has been established with some 2,200 transformational leaders in over 750 cities.
In January, Rev. John Quam was brought on as National Facilitator of Global Ministries to help Coalition partners work toward collaborative efforts to reach the more than 6,000 unreached people groups across the globe.
A Shaping Eternity Initiative, based on the Shaping Eternity video produced by Caleb Project and key mission organizations, was developed. The initiative is focused on bringing Unreached Peoples awareness and engagement to churches in America. The initiative has also produced a website (www.shapingeternity.com) and a consulting package that helps churches move into an Acts 1:8 model for outreach.
2004
MAC works alongside the producers of the film The Passion of the Christ to ensure that the church is equipped to take advantage of the ministry and evangelism opportunities generated by the film.
MAC City/Community Ministries facilitate Passion Summits in some 100 cities to expose pastors and Christian leaders to Passion-related evangelism resources and initiatives. Through these and other efforts, churches involved in the outreach reported a combined 60,000 people made decisions for Christ.
Through a collaborative relationship developed by the MAC City/Community Ministry Team, the International Bible Society and church movements in Jackson, MS, Houston, TX and Colorado Springs, CO distributed Scriptures to every household in these areas, saturating the cities with God’s Word.
The MAC City Impact Roundtable brings together leaders from dozens of cities across North America for prayer, encouragement and strategizing. Regional CIRs took place in: Austin, TX; El Paso, TX; St. Louis, MO; Ventura, CA; Cedar Rapids, IA; Indianapolis, IN and; Chicago, IL.
The MAC Strategic Planning Task Force works to increase awareness and involvement in the 40 Days of Purpose – Purpose Driven Life effort. Forty-seven denominational executives endorsed The Purpose Driven Life and promoted it in their churches. To date, over 17,000 churches have participated.
To help address the need for information on spiritual unity, evangelism and revival resources and initiatives, MAC began two free, monthly enewsletters: MAC EConnections aimed at pastors and church and lay leaders and; MAC Update – intended for members of the Coalition.
The 2004 Annual Meeting of the Mission America Coalition launches Loving Our Communities to Christ (LC2C), which is meant to serve as an outline to call the church together to construct customized, locally initiated and owned strategies, goals and action plans to reach communities with the love and grace of Jesus Christ. Fifteen cities express an immediate interest in bringing LC2C to their community.
Forty missions leaders gathered through the Mission America Coalition Global Ministries efforts, focus on the world’s unreached people groups and form a North American Unreached Peoples Network.
MAC serves as a co-sponsor of the 2nd Annual National Outreach Convention. Nearly 1,500 ministry leaders, speakers and resource providers participated in the over 80 workshops on various aspects of outreach and evangelism. MAC leaders directed workshops in the Collaborative Outreach Learning Track.
MAC Global Ministries’ Shaping Eternity (SE) Initiative, in partnership with the Caleb Project, adds several partners and distilled key resources to help local churches connect with the vision of reaching the most unreached peoples of the world and help them see that “ordinary” people can make an extraordinary impact.
2005
MAC establishes criteria for cities whose leaders desire to be part of Loving Our Communities to Christ pilot projects. These cities undergo an extensive evaluation period to determine their readiness for being involved in LC2C.
An updated MAC web site is launched to serve Coalition partners and the broader Body of Christ as they participate in collaborative and personal evangelism initiatives.
