Frequently asked questions:
Desktop Alert Solution

Mioplanet provides a reliable Desktop Alert Solution based on standard HTTP servers.

[image]What are the server-side requirements?[image]

The Desktop Alert software scans various XML files on the server:
[image] One XML file for the application settings
[image] Two XLL files for each source of alerts.

The files are simple XML files and any HTTP server can be used.
A file server can also be used.

[image]Where is hosted Mioplanet Admin Panel?[image]

  It's your choice!

[image]  You can use Mioplanet Admin Panel on our server and have the XML files updated on your server via FTP.

You will have to create a script to copy the files from our server to yours but this solution is fully secure.

[image]How the bandwidth is optimized?[image]

The Desktop Alert application scans the server for new alert. The refresh rate can be controled from Mioplanet Admin Panel or the XML configuration file.
A value of 5 minute means that the application will scan for new alerts 12 times per hour (288 times per day).

We have limited to the minimum the size of the XML file scanned by the application.
This file contains a version number, increased when an alert is added or updated.
The average size of this file is 10 bytes.

When the version number is increased, the full XML file containing the alerts is downloaded. This file is bigger (average of 400 bytes) but is downloaded only when a change is available.

[image]What is the bandwidth usage?[image]

Less than 360 Mb per month for 1000 users.

The bandwidth is used as follow:

[image]  By default, the XML configuration file is downloaded daily.
The average size of this file is 500 bytes.
When reloaded on a daily basis, the bandwidth used is 5 Mb per day for 1000 users.

[image]  The Dekstop Alert engine check a small XML file for each source of alerts.
The average size of this XML file is 10 bytes.
For a refresh rate set to five minutes (an alert is received after 5 minutes or less), the bandwidth used is 3 Mb per day for 1000 users.

[image]  When you send an alert, the XML file containing the alerts is downloaded.
The average size of this file is 400 bytes.
If you send an average of 10 alerts per day, the bandwidth usage is 4 Mb per day for 1000 users.

So, if you send an average of 10 alerts per days to 1000 users with a refresh rate of 5 minutes, the daily usage of bandwidth is 12 Mb per day = 360 Mb per month.

[image]Can I maintain the XML files without Mioplanet Admin Panel?[image]

Yes, you can manually edit the XML files, or create a script to update them.
