What Are We Thinking?
Recently, I have enjoyed watching the memorial news about a woman named Rosa Parks. Rosa was a forty-two-year-old tailor's assistant at the Montgomery Fair department store in Birmingham, Alabama, when on a day she was weary and not feeling well, she didn’t get up so that white passengers could have the front of the bus. Racism in America was confronted that day, and thank God for the decision of that little lady, the dream sermon by Dr. Martin Luther King, and the civil rights movement reminding Americans of the Constitutional right for every American to have equality in the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness. Yet, today, I wonder…what are we thinking?
Is racism in America alive or dead? I think it depends on the group you analyze. I, as the Pastor of a large church, have decided the best way to stop racism is to stop dealing with anyone based on the color of their skin. Would it be racism to have a white Miss America? How about a White Entertainment Network? Think about a White Caucus in the United States Senate? If that is racism, I submit to you any race identifying itself based on color deals with their own hidden feelings of racism. We have tried forced integration until we need to confess that the courts cannot make us love or respect one another. We have tried education and we hear over and over again of inequality. Perhaps, we ought to admit we are not able to do what only God can do.
Let’s stop fighting for dysfunctional cultures where fathers are absent, crime is prevalent, and rebellion to authority is too often the norm. Let’s pursue something greater….a real relationship with Jesus Christ. Only Jesus can change all of us enough to get along.
Recently, I read where some areas of Europe are taking down pictures of pig or pork advertisements to pander to the Muslim community. I hope our elected officials are not so stupid. What would America be without "Porky the pig," The Three Little Pigs, or some good old southern pork barbecue. You have thrown God out of school, taken the Ten Commandments off the walls, and excluded the Christian voice as much as you can from the political arena, and you call yourself tolerant? What are you thinking?
I think it is time for believers to sit down and say we are not moving any further…leave our message alone, give us the tolerance you so boastfully declare is necessary for every kooky ideologue that comes along, understand that we, the people, believe in God not Allah, truth not theory, and life not death. I don’t know what you are thinking, but I know what I am thinking….as Mac truck says, "That is my opinion and it ought to be yours!"
