Fine. Laugh at me.

Frankly, I'm not sure why I'm even sharing my many humiliating gaffes with whoever happens to read them, but I guess laughing is always good.

Plus, I'm a masochist.

I can take the abuse. Bring it.

Don't even bother telling me you're laughing with me, because I know better. I'd be laughing at you, if I had the chance.

The answer.

The answer to the question is here.

This sounds like an incredibly philosophical revelation. It isn't. I just prefer high drama.

You can also use the new colored button at the top of the left-hand column. I don't know if I'll add the link to my main row of blogs or not...

What's Julie up to?

written by Julie R. Neidlinger      0 comments      link this post

I've tried not to give away exactly what I'm learning to do on my summer "hiatus", but I have been periodically hinting at it in blog posts and Twitter updates. I'm leery of letting the world know since, if I fail to succeed, it's just that many more people that know.

Poll: What do you think I'm learning to do?

A kind of hiatus.

written by Julie R. Neidlinger      4 comments      link this post

I'll be on hiatus in just a few days.

Sort of.

In the months of June and July (and probably part of August) of 2008, I'll be temporarily moving to another city in North Dakota in order to learn to do something. I will also be going to Nicaragua in June and in general, breaking my regular routine.

It is highly likely that I will not have regular computer and/or internet access* and so, I will be:
Setting up an automatic responder on my email so that any emails that come in inform the sender of this hiatus. Feel free to contact me, but understand my response will likely be delayed.
Trying as best I can to beg, borrow, and steal computer time and check my email so that I can manage the business end of Lone Prairie and keep abreast of any orders or client requests. Having a few blog posts ready to automatically publish when I'm gone (but it won't be many).

I may blog during this time, if circumstances and the desire to do so allows.

Or, I may not.

I will, however, use my cell phone and Twitter to sort of "mini blog" and so, if you want to keep up on things (take note, family), you can either do that on my Twitter homepage or just use the "breaking news" section at the top of this page; they both carry the same updates.

I will miss the lilacs blooming this year, and likely not be able to be at the airport in Winnipeg when my brother and his family fly home and set up shop on one of the farms. I will have to trust that my strict lawn-mowing expectations will be kept up in my absence, and put a number of projects (ranging from things I need to do with the chainsaw involving trees and branches to art/sewing ideas) on the back burner. I will have to trust that the cat will be fed and watered and taken care of. I will have to trust that when bad weather comes through, the computers will be properly turned off and disconnected from the outlet. I will miss my room and all the summer walks and runs down the road. Despite feeling a little morose about all of that, I am excited at all the changes this summer may bring and the very new surroundings, people, work, experiences and ideas I'll be exposed to. I am excited to break routine and maybe find some new ideas or people or paths. Sometimes a trade-off is necessary.

If you get bored while I am gone, you can:
Slowly stop coming to this web site and really bum me out but know that I'd understand. Entertain yourself with all the feeds. Know that I appreciate your patience with me, particularly if you are a customer.
Go outside and do all the summer things people do and stay away from the computer. Know that when I come back I will explain what I attempted to learn to do.
We could all use a little hiatus this summer, especially from the computer, and probably even from Lone Prairie, don't you think?

-----------------------------------

* I admit that I'm rather pleased about that. The internet can become a behemoth on many levels, and the constant communication and connection to so many people is something I need a vacation from.

Yearning for God.

Another new blog header has been brought into the world, this time over at the blog "Yearning for God."

I enjoyed the request of mixing daffodils and images from the Washington coast. I'd taken a trip to Washington back in 2004, and spent a few days driving and hanging out along the beaches in mid-September when there were few other people and overwhelming beauty. It was memories of that vacation that I brought into use in this graphic. I also created two other options, as usual, to pick from. Generally, I produce three images for the client to choose from. The second option was a more traditional Washington coast scene, and the third was simple daffodil imagery.

If you'd like your own custom blog header or blog graphics, I can help you with that. Read more here.

Views from the road.

I like the phrase "views from the road" -- it makes me think of highways and road trips and hikes and discoveries.

I had the opportunity to design a blog header for a the Views From The Road blog, and found myself with the delightful "task" of coming up with some artwork.

The header that was chosen of the three created was this one. I went for a "North Dakota" road look, the nearly flat road going off into a wide horizon with the only trees being the utility poles that line so many township roads here. North Dakota roads are the perfect place to learn to draw one-point perspective. The owner of the blog, who hails from North Dakota originally, may have recognized that flat, open road that opened up clearly ahead, no obstructions.

The second graphic I drew was monochromatic and mellow, using three slight variations of blue and a blue pen. My aim was to give the graphic an unstudied air about it, the idea of the open road metaphorically hazy before me and in my mind.

The third graphic is the one you see here in this post. This is more the traditional watercolor study that visitors to this website see periodically. Using watercolor to loosely lay out the colors, I followed up with my gray-blue pen and created a forest road with a destination unknown and unseen, hidden behind curves and trees.

If you have a blog or website that is in need of a new header graphic, or just some new graphics in general, look no further. Read more here to find out what you need to do to make it happen.
