Very often that i see while submitting to a directory, their page description in Search Engine is same even when they have different meta description for each category in the phpld admin panel. After experimenting for a while, I came to believe that many probably did not know how to make it work and have different description on each page of the site.

Well, if you have spent tons of hours writing unique descriptions and having trouble getting it indexed a faster way of doing it is display them in the content of your site. Through out my learning career which is never ending, I learn new things every day, and I think every one should get a chance of knowing the little I know because idk alot of stuff hence why i own idk.in (Just a joke ;))

Well i wrote unique description for some of my categories just to see whether it works, and it didn’t. Than i decided to show unique description on my home page. Well the function it is that each page displays a unique meta description if it is set in the admin panel, and if not than it will display the site meta description, so Google see a different text on each page.

If you want these to be added in google correctly, you have to make sure that you have a SEO Friendly Layout. SEO Friendly layout for phpLD can obtained in three ways.

First way is using a Table Trick

In this technique, you make a master table which contains smaller tables inside to make sure that you display the content above all the content. When i say content i mean the text because images can be on the top and it will not matter in indexing.

This trick works if you do it carefully. I am not going to copy and paste the whole html codes here, but I will link you to the right resource which display a simple example of the layout.

Second way is Complete CSS Coding

When i say complete css coding, it means omit main.tpl because that is something extra that i did with my last Out of the Box template. I say complete css design because css gives you an option to display the content div above the sidebars and still be able to have the leftside bar, and not have any problems, but now days it seems a bit hard for phpld designers to stick with completely css. The only one i see who does an excellent job in doing css designs is my close friend Marko Pektovic (Balkanboy) the designer of Aviva and Sevenseek and many others. I have learned CSS enough to satisfy my needs and my clients.

The third and last option is Right Side Bar

This one is the most easiest way, but it limits the directory to only have one sidebar and only at the right side otherwise your site will display some thing like this. No offense to rob or no discrimination because Bloggeries is one of the strongest web directories on the web. This site was one of the few that i tested while writing this post

Well this was just a breeeze through the SEO Friendly Layouts because that should be the first thing you should ensure when getting a custom designer.

Now second, you want your description to display above all text because google only takes the top little text of your website and you dont want some links to take over that.

Now many sites that are very strong in SE Rankings and all have this problem in their site pages due to the design which prevents them to rank even stronger and once it is resolved they can be even stronger than they are right now. Another example of the site which uses text above all content is this one. It is because of the extreme promotion of the site Chris ranks so good and if he fix this issue, I am certain Alive Web Directory can surpass everyone.

The sole purpose of me writing this post was the guy asked for help in phpLD Forums, and i thought i should explain this to all my valuable visitors.

If you add this {$MetaDescription|strip|escape|trim} to the top of the content which displays to the user and above all the text on your site, you will be guaranteed to get the text when you search your site like site:www.idk.in in google.

If you dont have unique meta description your site description will be displayed on the site page and in search engine saving you from displaying Irrelevant text like Submit Link | Top Hits | ….. so on and so forth.

I have tried this and it is working great for me, and i am working on writing custom description for every category in Genuine Web Directory, and my advice to all is that you should spend the time in your site doing this slowly so it doesnot seem like a burden and makes your site good in the long run.

Even better is that this technique will help you with your Detail Pages and Supplemental results to an extent because when you display the code on all pages of your sites it will include detail pages, and it will copy the listing’s meta description and paste it there so you have unique description for all listings in google. This means that i strongly advise all the webmasters to open Meta Tags for their submisson page so it saves you as an editor some work. I am trying new strategies every day with my site, and I will post the ones which brings me much success.
