Theme Viewer Alternative at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

The theme version of the plugin directory is open at WordPress.org. The only catch is the theme needs to be exclusively GPL Compatible. Why is that an issue? When you have original work licensed under GPL, you no longer have creative control over how it can be used, simply put, anyone can download your work, add their links (own or paid) or malware code and distributed it without your consent. Do you really want that to happen? Isn’t that the reason why we shut the Theme Viewer in the first place? (6) // 07.18.2008 // 7:35 am // Tagged GPL, License, Un, WP, news, theme viewer, wordpress

The Big MediaTemple Crash

Added later: apparently it was not their server, but a network issue experiences only by Comcast customers due to a break in their traffic routing to the West Coast!

mtIf you are reading this, we are back up again from this afternoons crash which pulled the plug on tens of thousands of web sites. It was not just sites on (dv) or (gs), even premium sites like TechCrunch and Jeffrey Zeldman (promoters of MT) were not spared, even MediaTemple.net was down, as if the whole place came down crashing! Questions on redundancy, data protection and web security creep into ones mind when you realize that for the period of this black out, there was not way to reach your site via FTP or HTTP and MediaTemple via email. I am glad we are back now, but it sucks when you think that for 6 hours, the primetime Thursday traffic to all our sites got nothing but “Problem loading site – unable to connect” message. I am sick of moving servers so I will suck-it-up and stay with (mt) for now.

Cheap And Affordable Web Hosting Companies

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Headsetoptions.org and Mandarinmusing.com have been providing Web Design, SEO, WordPress Themes and WordPress Customization services to promote bloggers and businesses create their unique brand images. We now offer premium Web Hosting for just $10 a month!

Reliability, disk space, bandwidth, upload/download speed, FTP access, operating system and programming tools, security and backup, and most importantly pricing and support are the key factors you must thoroughly do your homework in before you even go to the next step. Read this article as a beginner’s guide to choose a web hosting company.

Read web hosting reviews, both good and bad. You need to know the reasons why you should or should not use a web host. This is a must, you will not only learn about various web hosting companies as service providers, but you will learn about the possible problems you might face as a webmaster which you may not have considered. Reviews are very subjective and it’s hard to tell based on one source, so read as many as reviews as you can, prepare a comparison spreadsheet for overall ratings, and finally make your own educated and informed decision. I would recommend reading web hosting reviews by web designers and web designing companies that also offer web hosting as part of their web design package other than their own, simply because they would buy bulk packages and their regular and frequent usage will give them a much better idea of how the whole process works.

We have worked with clients hosting on DreamHost, HostMonster, Yahoo Hosting and Media Temple, just to name a few. But for beginners, I surely think DreamHost, BlueHost and HostMonster will give you the bang for the buck!

Hackers Crack ICANN Blog

Mirror sites of “Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers” or ICANN, the organization that is responsible for assigning unique addresses so computers know where to find each other, was cracked by Turkish hackers. Within hours from the first crack, the organizations WordPress v2.5.1 powered blog was compromised. Although I believe version 2.3 was the worst, vulnerability issues are not strictly limited to any one version or blogging platform. So the only way to keep you site safe is by checking on it regularly for changes outside of what you authorize and keeping a good backup of your site! Digital Picture Frame vs JavaScript Slideshow

Ever wondered what operating system is powering the rotating images within a digital picture frame? If you think about it, all it takes is a few lines of code and you can make images rotate as in a JavaScript slideshow or the rotating header on our current site.

I was shopping around for a DPF, and found Sony DPF-D70 review on digital picture frame reviews, a site powered by WordPress. In reading some of it’s features, it occurred to me that there is a lot for me to learn from it. For example, it has a feature that allows the images to resize to fit the aspect ratio of the frame. Imagine this scenario in a CSS styled site. It would account for a completely fluid design where every style is a percentage and no absolute values. Why is this important? With the growing screen size and resolution, this might be the norm that we will all need to conform in future web design.

Getting back to the digital picture frame buyer’s guide, the reviewer compares features that include color options, screen resolution, video display options, connectivity, file transfer method, multimedia support, etc. that makes it a breeze to find the one you are looking for. In speaking with the author of the site, we learned that the site will be populated with new reviews since the site is relatively new. By the end of the conversation, I actually volunteered to help him with WordPress support, although the design is not one of ours.

Starting Your Local Web Design Business

Finding web design clients online has been a breeze for us, thanks to Google organic searches. Now we would like to also like to tap the local Richmond VA Web Design market for small businesses. So here are a few things we would do which you could do if you wanted to start up your own web designing company locally!

Volunteer web designing services to local, reputed organizations, high traffic businesses. It’s not easy to spend time giving away freebies, but patience pays. Try it and trust me you will gradually start establishing a nice network for yourself. Advertise in all free spaces available, Craigslist.org, your city website, freelance designer websites. If you can afford to pay for advertising, find a high traffic site that could redirect potential clients to your own website. Place your ad in yellow pages as well and Google Local Businesses Listings. Talk a lot whenever you get a chance to anyone you meet and introduce yourself, your business. Always carry your business card to give away whenever required. Small business owners sometimes do not know how a website could help them, so be prepared to educate and motivate them to have a website. Please your existing client and help them with a little extra that they do not ask for. For example, we provide free support to a lot of our clients, although it takes away a lot of our productive time. You will earn their goodwill and word of mouth advertising without having to ask for it. Network, network, network with anyone and everyone. Network with local internet marketing and SEO companies. Contact local web design companies that are already successful and pitch yourself as a designer who they could sub-contract their work for a cheaper, quicker and a decent alternative. Create one page flyers advertising your web design services that you can mail potential clients. Always maintain good relationships with your neighbors, friends, family. Help others whenever you can, it will come back positively to you!

Dissertation Design, Presentation and Style Guides

If you thought only web design had strict standards, think again. Graphic design covers interesting style guidelines such as topography, use of white space, size of fonts, color combinations, gradients, etc. Web design style focuses on visual as well as technical components of design. So, not just imagery, but coding skills, content writing and creative writing skills, all come into play simultaneously.

Whether you are writing an e-book, a novel, a resume, or a thesis, presentation is key to building that first impression. Research engineers like me constantly work on research papers, and for those wanting to go for the PhD programs, it’s so imperative that you have some dissertation help. What we may not know is that dissertation involves a set of standards for design and writing of documents and you need to learn and understand dissertation methodology and dissertation research methods in order to make a great dissertation presentation.

Design documentation has presentation requirements include pagination, layout, type of paper- acid free for permanence or regular, color, texture of paper, paper size, sequence or order of components, table of contents, citation style, Roman numerals text criteria, and so on. Of course a lot depends on the field you are in and what your university or organization accept. Some have strict in-house requirements, some may accommodate changes or new ideas depending on how conventional your industry or institute is. If you are doing a technical writing project undertaken by a team, it is important that the finished documentation does not delineate any one individual’s personal style, keep it more neutral and objective. These are just the basics, for more you may check dissertation blogs.

Aligned Theme for WordPress - Site Reboot

We broke the 800px barrier this evening when we switched to Aligned- a theme originally designed by Thomas - The Undersigned for the Habari Project. We ported over the theme to WordPress to skin our own site. This nifty grid based theme is in beta and as you may notice, it can use a bit more styling to handle the various forms we have on this site and of course the IE bugs. We also went to a center aligned design, which was long over due as most visitors did not particularly like the left aligned design we sported earlier. Here are two screenshots of the old and new designs for those of you reading our feeds, visit us to get a better look.

New Aligned for Habari Based Design

Among other things, the design has a rotating header (on page refresh); a JavaScript based slider for the “About & Contact” tab in certain pages; the polls now show only in single pages which have “poll relevant” content and numerous conditional tags that make the usability of the site much more interactive, logical and hopefully fun. Please do let us know what you think, and if you find a “real” bug (not the “not aligned in IE 5″ bug) we will mention you in this blog post along with a link to your site.
