Tonfisk Design is a ceramic design brand, which was founded by two designers, Tony Alfström (b. 1972, Finland) and Brian Keaney (b. 1972, Ireland) in 1999.
Tonfisk is dedicated to creating eye-catching, functional, innovative tableware produced by hand to exacting standards. The Tonfisk designers believe that the old slogan “form follows function†doesn’t necessarily mean that all objects need to look the same.
In the HARDCORE exhibition Tonfisk presents an example of their innovative design work. The Kinos Sushi Set (2005) takes its inspiration from the Finnish winter – ‘kinos’ is Finnish for ‘snowdrift’. In the Kinos Sushi Set the shape of the design and its porcelain material evoke associations with snow. The plates are cast with straight walls and surfaces, and only during firing are the final contours developed to produce a unique form. The sushi set includes three stackable plates of varying sizes suitable for sushi, fish and other culinary specialties. On display is also an unconventionally shaped fruit dish titled Director’s Cut (2005). The design team for both products on view is composed of Tony Alfström, Brian Keaney and Anu Wright (b. 1976).
