Mets Strike Out Looking
The whole season came down to this. Down by two runs with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning of game 7 and the bases were loaded. Who came to the plate? None other than the $119 million man: Carlos Beltran.
When the Mets signed Beltran to that huge contract before the 2005 season (there are 4 more years on that contract) it was just for this situation. Mets fans all over the world finally got to see they star center fielder bat in this most pressure packed situation. The situation he was being payed millions of dollars to handle. What did he do??? He striuck out looking!
Now Mets fans all over the world feel ripped off.
Don’t get me wrong. There are many other reasons the Mets lost this series to the Cardinals. They should have one it in 5 or 6 games and never have had to play a game 7.
But for Beltran to strike out looking is inexcusable. At least give me a fly ball to the warning track. Give me an out I can be proud of. (Not that I’m proud of any outs but you understand what I mean.) An out like that is so embarrassing there should be a rule against games ending that way. (Stike out looking on the last at bat of the game and we’ll do the at bat over again.)
The Mets have plenty to be proud of for the 2006 season. To have it end on a called third strike is a shame.
Sour Grapes for Pujols
One down, 3 more to go. My favorite part of lasts nights 2-0 Mets win was when Carlos Beltran fired the ball to Carlos Delgado at first base after catching the ball in center field to double up Albert Pujols who made the baserunning error of moving too far away from the bag. Pujols was noticeably frustrated. His post game comments bear that frustration out. He was quoted as saying that Tom Glavine didn’t throw a very good game. Pujols should know better. You can talk like that when your teams wins and you go 4 for 4 but not when your team only gets 4 hits and doesn’t score any runs.
Mostly Good News For Mets Yesterday
It was a big day for the Mets yesterday. First they learned Tom Glavine will not need surgery. Then they pulled off a comeback win. Then they finally acquired Shawn Green.
Wright is a Deity
The more I see of David Wright the more I like him. Wright is quickly ascending the ladder to sainthood in my mind. His game last night added some brownie points in his favor.
I turned on the game in the third inning and watched as Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado homered to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. Then I watched as Bobby Abreu and Jimmy Rollins homered in the 3rd and 5th respectively to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead. (It was Rollins second homer of the game.)
With the game still in the balance Wright came up to the plate in the top of the sixth inning and promptly sent a Ryan Madson pitch into the left field bleachers to tie the game. This set up a 5 run inning in which the Mets took the lead.
Then in the ninth inning with no outs and runners on first and second Wright made a tremendous backhanded stab on Met killer Pat Burrell’s shot up the third base line and turned it into a double play to kill a potentially deadly inning and save the game for the Mets who would win by a score of 9-7.
Billy Wagner pitched the last 5 outs to record his first save in Philadelphia since leaving the Phillies as a free agent to come to the Mets. Alot has been said about Wagner going back to Philly and he really heard it from the fans. But he took it all in stride and got his 13th save of the year.
El Duque Lives!
I was talking to a friend a few couple of ago about the Mets acquisition of Orlando Hernandez. My friend was not happy with the trade. He thpought the Mets could do better. He insisted that El Duque was washed up and not worth it. My response was a threefold argument which was as follows:
Soler Registers First Win
Congratulations to Alay Soler on his first major league win last night as the Mets beat the Dodgers 4-1. In 7 innings pitched last night Soler surrendered six hits while striking out seven and walking one. Good work.
Maine Flops
John Maine made his start last night and had me wishing he and Jorge Julio were not traded to the Mets for Kris Benson. That’s a pretty harsh statement but last night’s game really stunk.
Victor-y Is Ours
Victor Zambrano had his best start of the young season yesterday. Not that the bar was set so high but his 6 inning, 5 hit and 1 run performance last night would have been a good start for anyone.
Mets Win in 11
It was the kind of game I’ve talked about on MostlyMets many times before. A character builder. A game where one event happens that deflates you but instead of folding you rise to the occassion and show the opponent who’s boss.
Back on Trach?
The Mets got a much needed win last night behind some good pitching and timely hitting. Steve Trachsel only mistake was Barry Bonds 710th career home run in the second inning. Beyond that Trachsel was solid.
