If you've ever had suspicions about the kind of people that totally shun technology (aside from the Amish), it turns out that your stereotyping was in the right: They're absolute freaks. MTV profiled some of these Luddites in an episode of True Life, "I Live Off the Grid," and they make even the weirdest, most obsessed geeks around seem normal. Besides smelling like crap (for various reasons), living outside, and never, ever getting to do anything awesome, you have to respect old clams. Designers these days seem bound and determined to lower our productivity with products that entice us to sleep when we should be working. The iSleep concept expands on the idea behind products like the Napbook by making the process a little more high-tech. When you close your laptop, the fan exhaust automatically fills up the latex-lined cushion with warm air. It also activates a music playlist that will sooth you to sleep for 10 minutes before sounding an alarm to wake up. I highly doubt that this product will ever see the light of day though, so it looks like you will have to continue to rely on you arm, the supply closet, your car or that space under your desk to catch a little shut-eye. iPhone OS 2.1 Won't Fetch Emails in Sleep Mode

Another bug in iPhone OS 2.1, which we have tested and reproduced, is that it will no longer fetch emails in the background while in sleep mode on battery power. It's most probably one of the power-saving tweaks introduced in 2.1, since Apple says that the 15-minute fetch interval is the worst wear on the battery because it never lets the phone go into deep sleep mode. This Apple discussion thread chronicles the problem at length. It's possible it'll be fixed in the next update—a reader tells us that Apple confirmed it's a "known problem" and that they are looking into it, but in the meantime, don't lean too hard on fetch. Iphone security flaw

Another iPhone Security Hole in Password-Protected Mode

While this iPhone security hole isn't nearly as gaping as the last one we covered (which was fixed by Apple), it too exploits the emergency call feature in password-protected mode. In password-protected mode, there's an option to disable SMS preview, so if someone picks up your locked phone, they can't see incoming text messages. However, if you activate a locked phone's emergency call mode, and it receives a text message, it'll show you the full text in preview. And yes, this is with 2.1. Again, a sorta minor security oversight, but if you're super-secret about your texts (for whatever reasons), this is definitely a problem and needs to be fixed in the next update. When T-Mobile announced that they had sold out of the initial G1 pre-order and were tripling production to meet demand, they said that you could still pre-order a phone through Oct. 21 to receive it at a later date. Unfortunately, it looks like a much later date. If you pre-ordered one after Oct. 3, you'll have to wait until at least Nov. 10 to get your phone. Meaning at this point it's probably better to just line up on launch day if you're dying to get your hands on one as soon as possible and didn't plunk down your money early. Voodoo Envy 133 Review (Verdict: Plenty Thin, Plenty Pricey)

[image] VoodooPC's Envy 133, the world's thinnest laptop, just started shipping, and we scored one of the first production units straight outta Calgary. It's a lithe black laptop that keeps cool while running Vista, a super light machine that's strong as hell thanks to a carbon-fiber frame. It's the size of a MacBook Air with way more tech crammed inside, including its own second Linux-based operating system. And though it costs a lot more than most laptops that perform similar chores, it does it with a grace that I haven't seen since Vista's launch. It's not a gamer's system, but the Voodoo team deserves credit for using what they've learned to build a laptop that stands out when everything else on the PC market just blends in. News about the possibility of manual auto-correct shut-off showing up in the iPhone 2.2 software has sparked a minor debate amongst the editors about the usefulness of such a feature. Most people would probably leave it on, but it would be nice to type the word "fuck" now and then without iPhone wholesomeness turning it into the word "duck." Let's face it, emailing someone to call them a "stupid duck" kind of disarms the comment altogether. However, with a consistent regimen of swearing, the iPhone will eventually stoop to your level.
