Great content in the video, however I thought Facebook would be more high tech then this. lol.

Also to people about to watch, the most cogent part starts at the 5 minute mark..

Though I agree with the comments about quality of AV (or lack thereof) and length of the vid (!), the new developments certainly look intriguing... providing much more customization for the user. I'm eager for the launch sitewide!

...tho' I can't help feeling some of the neatly organized info could be geared toward helping the headhunters & recruiters quickly find what they need!! :)
William wrote at 12:32am on May 22nd, 2008
Oh dear. How on earth COULD you have such a dreadful video/audio for us to watch?! I've always thought of Facebook as a professional outfit. This is just embarrassing
William wrote at 12:34am on May 22nd, 2008
PS: Somebody at Facebook should do a screencast (in decent quality!). That would be far more informative than this video of a presentation. Could be cut into chapters, talking through the various components, and focused on 1) the user 2) the developer etc etc
Lincoln wrote at 4:26am on May 22nd, 2008
You guys are loing sight of the fact that this whoe thing isn't about the quality of the video, it's about the innovation of the structural design of Facebook. This looks tremendous to me, and I'm not quite finished yet.

But, it does baffle somewhat that they've not done this in better quality.
Joe wrote at 6:15am on May 22nd, 2008
Still haven't caught on to the fact that TV (and subsequently poor, quality videotapes of facetime meeting/presentations) don't fit on the web?

Good grief people take a few moments to look at the technology available out here beyond sending one line tweets back and forth and take a few cues from what you learn.

I'm sure most of the employees that were forced to sit through this were bored to tears. Imagine the majority of interested users reactions? Here's another hint, the majority didn't waste time watching or commenting.

I just become a 'fan' to comment on how awful the video was, didn't show of any of the hard work they have been doing at all.

And I also don't like the idea of not being able to decide what people see on the front page, like the flickr application etc
Elizabeth wrote at 11:54am on May 22nd, 2008
I agree with Karen. I'm concerned that no one will see my extended info, which will now be shoved awkwardly under the "applications" tab.

i DONT think facebook needs a better camera man... i think this video did the trick and unless you have A.D.D and are no older then 12 years old... you can appreciate this video.
i thought the video was great... very informative and pretty exciting :D i cant wait to see some of these changes and i think you guys have really done your homework and looked in to what the user wants and come up with great ideas. facebook wins
THANKS FOR THE PREVIEW :D cant wait

They just compressed the heck out of the video so that people with slower connections could still see it. It looks like it wasn't really made for US. They had a meeting and recorded and thought.. what the heck, why don't we share this? It wasn't initially designed for a web feed.

I think the concepts they want to focus on are great. Of course the devil is in the details but I'm hopeful that much more good than bad will come from this. I look forward to it.

Tyronne wrote at 6:29am on May 23rd, 2008
one of the things that "I've" noticed is Yevgeny thinks he's funny..but, he's not..

also, it seems as though they are just doing this for potential/current "bosses" to stalk out their employees/potential employees "faster"..they're putting whatever you do here for fun somewhere in the back, so they can just instantly see exactly what you're doing..I guess it works out well for stalkers too..

there isn't a problem with having a shit load of applications on the main page, it's just a problem when idiots have ALL of them open..

fight the change..*shakes fist*..they think they can do whatever they want 'cause we are all addicted..

Joanne wrote at 7:48am on May 23rd, 2008
I think a lot of us sit through more than 20 minutes for less valid reasons and end up with a lot less information...I like the fact that facebook developers have shared this information with us instead of just implementing it and leaving everyone floundering about in the new format...people who like organization and a tidy desk are gonna love this new development...others will still manage to make a mess of it...which I'm sure takes more effort than just conforming...all in all...I am looking forward to the new format...the bonus for users with slower pc's (not to be confused with slower pc users!!!) is that everything will load faster because you will be loading what you immediately want to access...instead of EVERYTHING...

...I'm not going to grumble about AV quality...though it was challenging to watch and listen to...sharing it appears to have been an afterthought...and a very good one!!!

...nice job Facebook!!! Thanks for the heads up!!!

I'm alright with the poor quality of the video. I don't really want to see a bright flashy video trying to sell a new profile design. I think the beauty of facebook is that it is different from myspace and lacks all the junk and bright colors and advertisements all over the place. Even though we've been inundated with lots of pretty useless applications, i still prefer Facebook. I think it's great that all the applications go in a different tab, because I tend to pay more attention to the profile info, the pictures, the wall, and the people to people interaction. In fact, I wouldn't mind if they took most of the applications away, but i think the new design is a good compromise.

I will be happy if I don't have to drag application boxes up and down to sort them.

..about being unable to collapse the mini-feed.......I don't appreciate that. If they are "giving me more control over my profile"...why am I not allowed to collapse it??? You can go into a profile and 'un-collapse' it to read if you choose to...so why make it mandatory to be open? It just takes up more loading time. There are mini-feeds, news feeds, requests, notifications often repeating the same information. I don't care to see someone sent fifty ?? to fifty people each listed separately.
Matt wrote at 9:08pm on May 23rd, 2008

Ok, where is the wall tab? That didn't need to be so long and waffley, or such bad quality or unprofessional.

I was looking forward to these improvements.... but now Im just worried. It sounds like they don't know what they are talking about. Talking about rich interesting content people put their time into which are shown in their profiles in application boxes. Yes, some of it is interesting and thought out, but most is plain annoying, and I can see everything getting really messy real quick, like much messier than things are now.
Krystal wrote at 9:28am on May 24th, 2008
They say they want to make our profiles more "cleaner" and less cluttered, but they won't allow us to collapse our mini feed? The mini feed makes are profile look even more cluttered. What if I didn't want people to know what I was doing in my mini feed? That violates my privacy, and it should be changed back immediately!

I think it sounds really neat.

No, Paul, they aren't just bored. As they explained in the video, they are trying to find easier ways to make deeper connections between facebook users. Just because you have a great product, doesn't mean you can't improve it.

Also, it's understandable that they don't give the users a beta tab. For one thing, its probably a copyright danger, and for another, look at how many people comment on the pictures and videos that don't even read the entire note or watch the entire video. People are too lazy to do research and find out what is really going on.

Keep up the great work, Facebook!

Does Facebook really read this?

VIDEO

It SHOULD have been in a YouTube like format where you can see how long it is, where you are in the length, and definitely have to have the PAUSE button because it's soooo long.

The picture should be of a greater value so we can see what's on the screen, in focus, so we can see what you're talked about. What we saw is like we were very farsighted and weren't wearing our glasses, and the talk wasn't very clear as well.

Quit adjusting the focus (the in and out) and contrast soooooo much!

Do you think that they will be reading this and make changes?

Watch an Apple Keynote and then do this again. Thats how you need to do it. Direct image feed of what is being presented, and split screen to the presenter when necessary. Also, direct feed to the Mic, that can be solved with a $5 cable from Radio Shack. These are the kind of video's I expect from a guy at a presentation with a video phone. I am really interested in this, and really want to watch it, but its tough. Nice to see you guys are using Keynote though. I don't think Facebook's budget, at least from what we hear, is so strained that a few decent cameras, or hell, hire a video production company. I know you can do it, you did it with that presentation Zuckerburg did not long ago.

My guess is "never", knowing that it has never happened before. Facebook has done major changes and redesigns to the site in the past, such as in May 2007, April 2007, September 2006, February 2006, August 2005, etc. and none of those major changes resulted in any significant net flocking of users to another site.

I don't understand how being able to add custom app tabs to the top will work. I can seeing adding one or two, but you know there are gonna be crazy people out there trying to add a tab for every shitty app they use. How is Facebook controlling the amount of tabs that fit?

I actually like most of the changes, though it does suck that people like myself who are capable of using restraint when it comes to applications and page clutter will lose the opportunity to showcase one or two valuable apps on the home profile screen (ie - "What I'm Listening To", etc.).

Elijah wrote at 8:52pm on June 10th, 2008
tabs are a good idea. However, I think this is a pretty common theme,"FEED" is not something users really like. Couldn't we have an option to put the second tab (the one with the so-called "more static" information) first?
a lot of the information that shows up in the feed is so irrelevant that we end up deleting it anyway.
Maybe a way of REALLY giving control to the user would be to allow people to rearrange the tabs in the order they want them. I guarantee the vast majority of users would put their essential information first, not the feed.
Elijah wrote at 8:57pm on June 10th, 2008
Honestly, I felt that the real thrust of this was to give more business to application developers, thus making more money for the whole enterprise.
I personally am a "neat desk" freak, so yes, i tend to delete all the feed stories which show up from most applications. Honestly, I don't want everyone seeing a lot of those things. For instance, I have an application called "Pieces of Flair". I love it. Great application. Great way to send funny, cute, meaningful phrases to my friends. But I have lots of other friends on here who I'm not as close with. I don't want them to see personal exchanges between me and my more intimate friends. Neither do I want random strangers on Facebook to see those things. That is a definite invasion of my privacy. One of my favorite features of Facebook is that it provides more privacy than other social networking sites. All I can say is that we'd better still have the option to determine what we want included or excluded from the feed.

A Little Advice for Facebook:

I think that a billion dollar business could afford a decent video camera to record the conferences. Also, Facebook, being as high-tech as it as and being as popular is it is, I would think that they would post a more organizer presentation just for the users of facebook. Facebook could have at least given some time to create an online presentation for the users and developers of facebook. But, if they did do this it would be important to make the presentation short and simple. I do not think an average Facebook user would want to watch a 20 minute video with bad picture and audio quality. So, if there are anymore redesigns and/or inivations that make Facebook clean and simple for the user, please let us know in a more organized and clean way. I mean you are promote and a clean and organized Facebook profile. Why not give us a clean and organized information presentation?

Thank you,

Geransky, Quality is everything.
Without a quality Video to exemplify future changes, there is not the ability to foresee whats ahead.

I watched and enjoyed the entire thing. The content was great.

True, I felt a bit spoiled after watching the WWDC presentation by Steve Jobs in High Definition with the slides appearing edited in, crystal clear to read and whatnot, since this isn't quite near that... but I AM thankful that this video was shared with us, I couldn't have been there so I'm very glad to still be able to watch the presentation and hear what they have to say.

I hope all the quality-bashing people on here don't result in us not getting another video anytime soon because I honestly felt that the video was THAT much more informative than the occasional screen shot.

Long, boring and non-powerful presentation. The sound is very bad and... what's the point in reading charts?
Ravi wrote at 10:05pm on June 14th, 2008
this is a long boring, presentation.
the sound is very low, and the quality is bad as well.
why couldnt a billion dollar company make a good clip?

The audio is bad. They could have definitely spent more money to make the video more professional

Thanks for letting us in on the basics. I'm sure we'll all get used to it, transitions are always a bit difficult, especially in computer land ;)

Omg, everyone stop going on about the poor video/audio quality.
The main reason they posted the vid is for our information.
Not so everyone can experience a guy on stage in High Definition with 7.1 surround sound... geees.

I wasn't there but I am very surprise to see how cheap & poor this press event looks like. I am still a Public Relations student but honestly I would have expected more from Facebook. We can do better press events at school! Disapointed.

Seems this is the only place to post a opinion about "THE NEW FACEBOOK"
I just tried out this new feature & I don't like the new format at all- Its way more Clumsy and THE MAIN PAGE don't show the applications you want seen- it doesn't even show your basic wall
this is no good- the new format
And id like Facebook to remain as is

Oh yeah I forgot:

I wish people would stop complaining about upgrades, just because they're too damn lazy to figure out how to use the New FB.

But the video is STILL really long. BITES.

I got a little bored. But the basic info was good. =) When is the change?? I cant wait!!!!! I hope this new change will be useful and not complicated. Does any1 know when the change is to happen??
Lori wrote at 9:37am on August 8th, 2008
I just tried to watch the video and it was' not available at this time'.
I'm really not sure that we need a "New Facebook" either!! I'm completely happy with facebook as it is.
But can someone please tell me why in the world people are allowed to bash and disrespect and speak horrible slander about others on fb and no one seems to care?? Other than the one being slandered for all to see, that is.Facebook only blocks the offending slander from the person being abused, and allows others to still read it.Absurd is what it is!!They should be sued for most of the slander I've seen.
As for the 'old fb', I'm okay with it.
