ZOMG! No Android phones till Q4 2008... right on schedule!
There's a lot of hoopla today over a Wall Street Journal piece stating that Google's first Android device has been pushed back to late 2008 for release -- yet the article fails to mention that this is right inline with what Google has been saying for quite awhile now. Admittedly, the fresh-faced mobile competitor probably is finding itself somewhat mired in carrier demands, which doesn't seem unexpected given the broad swath of partners it's collaborating with and the open source nature of the project, but as phone release schedules go, it hasn't veered off the path much. The breakdown is something like this: from what we've been told, you can expect an Android-powered handset before the new year (i.e., HTC's Dream driven by Google's OS), followed by a crop of higher profile phones showing up in early 2009 (as previously stated by companies like LG and Samsung). So... feel free to switch off the alarms anytime you like.

Worrisome. Sounds like a prelude to backpedaling or outright flip-flopping from the carriers - which I suspected all along. Ultimately I seriously doubt we will see any carriers issuing Android, once they realize it prevents their evil, status quo abuse of the Consumer. In fact I predict some nasty law suits from the carriers trying to stop Android ( “….it’s a danger to national security!†). Remember, the carriers all banded to together to demand indemnity from being sue for giving our personal data to the government, why would they behave any different when faced with the reality of being just Dumb Pipes because of Android?
But’s thats OK, just hurry up and release it as a stand alone piece of software, with a short list of blessed hardware. Let market forces do the rest.

Unlocked Androids FTW! Fuck the carriers....

I can't express how much I hope you are wrong. At least I hope the massive power that is Google can at the very least crush their inevitable Scrooge McDuckness.

+1 for Scrooge McDuck

you do realize that Apple is basically getting tons of free advertising from the Carriers it hooks up with? If there's no carriers who's doing the work on the ground to promote the phones?
Google stores?
Face it, you're just cheap.

Same here.....with the 3G iPhone coming out...it's going to be very hard for me to hold back another 5 1/2 months :(
But for you, Google.....what's another 5 1/2 months? (eternity?)

so no news at all, right?

That's why I'm holding off on the iPhone 3G. I think the Android OS will be much better than the iPhones. But it's just a matter of getting some good hardware to go with it.
drumstyk1 @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:31PM
I'm confused. When android is released won't we be able to just flash it onto our...say treo 800's? I didn't think we had to wait until carriers released an android phone.
Yevon @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:35PM
Problem is that different phones use different drivers and require cooperation on behalf of the manufacturers (or some dude with 1337 hacking skills). And this is why I do not have Linux on my my Treo right now.

Thank you Engadget for reporting this as it should be. 99% of the tech sites out there are doing some lazy journalism today. There is no delay for anything yet.

Justin @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:54PM
I have such high hopes for Android that I'm willing to wait.
I just wish Google, or the carriers, would release more information on it's details. Will we be able to install Android onto older phones--such as, will the community be able to download a "RAZR" or "Treo 650" package and flash it to their phone?
The alternative would be that Android needs to come pre-installed, I suppose. Then how would Android upgrades work? Can it automatically reconfigure and update itself, a-la Windows Update? Will that require reflashing a phone?
I'm so excited, and yet starved for information.
Quix @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:13PM
Did anyone really think Google would be able to jump in and whip up a complete OPERATING SYSTEM when they can't even get their Web apps to a fully polished state???
I think Apple haters hoping Android will be the true iPhone killer (since WinMo certainly will not be) are in for some bitter disappointment.
I love Google, but Android sounded like a half-baked pet project from day one.
TareX @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:19PM
It's open source. The world modifies it. The best companies will make the phones for it. It's fast and fluid. It supports OpenGL ES 2.0.
i.e. It has everything to make it an iPhone killer. Let's be honest, the best thing about the iPhone is it's speedy, fluid, easy UI. The worst thing about the iPhone is its closed. Android has everything good the iPhone has, and lacks everything bad the iPhone suffers from.
Android enthusiasm is very much warranted.
I'm only worried about its proximity to WM7 release.
thedesolate1 @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:20PM
How could you say that with all the money, time and resources google has been putting into opening up spectrum and pushing for openness in the wireless arena? Just because there isn't a huge amount of publicity behind android that doesnt mean its a pet project. Google up "android OS" and you wont find a whole bunch of videos but there has been a lot of vaporware that has seemed like it is rigorously in development by all the propaganda but in the end have no finished product. Android is important because it will help push innovation in ways the iPhone can't because of its locked environment.
kingu @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:21PM
The iPhone is dead to me. And i couldnt care less about non-polished web apps. GUI is for the terminally challenged
TareX @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:15PM
Nothing new here.
On a different note, I heard the HTC Dream was supposed to be the "highest end" Android device among the first batch. But the way things are looking, Samsung's could have better specs (and not that far away)... now I'm a bit confused about my future purchase...
Reality Check @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:23PM
I love how the icon for Android is a robot. As if the average consumer wants a geeky robotic stamp on their phone.
People don't care if it's Linux or not, "open" or not. 85% of people never install any third party apps on any phone, smartphone or not. It just has to be easy to use, sleek, and attractive. And easy to use. I.e. not made for or by Linux geeks. Did I mention intuitive?
All that being said, what I've seen of Android so far looks nice. Let's see if they can zap out all the geekiness and make it appeal to regular people, like the iPhone. (heck, the OS practically looks like an iPhone clone already)
Californian @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:35PM
No, it is not an iPhone clone and nor does it look like one. The iPhone's interface is hideous compared to what I've seen of Android. And Google never makes their products inaccessible to the public, but the features that the general public won't use but are good for advanced users are always there. It'll be the same for Android, and hopefully it will be a success.
Hollywood @ Jun 23rd 2008 4:34PM

Whether you happen to particularly like the iPhone or not, saying its UI is "hideous" makes you look like a complete tool. Even the most partisan of Apple haters will admit that they are experts in creating polished and intuitive user interfaces, iPhone included.

Hollywood @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:28PM
When did Google ever say Android would be released prior to 4thQ 2008? Also, Android is not a phone it's an OS, so far Sprint is the only carrier that said it will use Android. A Sprint official said during a Webinar, "in 4thQ 2008 to 1stQ 2009 Sprint plans on releasing devices that embrace the Android and Linux environments". The Samsung Instinct was developed with Android in mind, a version of Android will be available for the Instinct late 4th Quarter this year to early 1st Quarter next year.
Californian @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:40PM
Yeah that's the only problem: Sprint isn't the best of carriers, and I wouldn't want Android to be less of a success because of the shortcomings of Sprint. I used Sprint for two years and it was worse and worse as time went on. Hopefully Google will choose other carriers as well!
bachviet @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:50PM
BTW Sprint is not the only carrier in the US that will support Android. T-Mobile US will be the first to get an Android-powered phone in Q4 of 2008.
Hollywood @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:57PM
The only problem Sprint "HAD" was customer service, to my understanding it's getting better I've noticed it myself. As far as pricing Sprint can't be beat and the network is solid. Sprint also implemented an 100% open source policy for SDK, the 1st device is the Instinct.
Also, Google, Samsung and Sprint have a solid partnership!
Hollywood @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:09PM
@bachviet
Learn to read, no where in my post did I say Sprint will be the only carrier, also get your facts straight, Sprint will be the 1st to use Android, look up the Google - Sprint alliance.

"... Sprint is the only carrier that said it will use Android."
This does not say or imply you meant Sprint would simply be the first carrier. The truth is we really don't know for sure who will be first. Just because Sprint might have said they would be does not make it so.

higher profile phones? higher profile than the htc dream? meaning what exactly
xuansu @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:44PM
Adroid right on schedule?
Sorry, but even though the late, late 4th quarter launch, with only ONE product before the new year technically fits the term "launched in second half of 2008" and "launched in 4th quarter of 2008", it's a delay nontheless. To use an analogy, when your boss say at the beginning of the month that you are going to get paid in second half of the month, I doubt you would think that means getting a check at the 11th hour on night of the 31st, for only 10% of what you're hoping to get.
While I have no idea how well received the Android will eventually become, it hasn't gotten off to a good start.
drakkor @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:28PM
but they always said it would launch 4th quarter 2008, most likely around chirstmas time?
so is it a delay?
jake @ Jun 23rd 2008 5:03PM
Like drakkor, I thought it was late 2008 too. They made no hard promises that it was going to be 2nd quarter 2008, that was mostly just speculation. They did promise late 2008/early 2009. I wasn't going to expect an android phone until 2009 at least.
Gizmodo going crazy over this article as if it was fact and that android will for sure fail. It's funny for once Engadget has shown itself to not be an Apple fanboy and let cooler heads prevail.
